    DEDICATION TO

    MRS. SPENCER V. WRIGHT

Regretting her loss, wishing her happiness in the many years to come, and knowing that she will help us indirectly for the rest of our lives, w e lovingly dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Wright.

    2

  • Last fall, when the yearbook staff met, it was their desire to make the 1970 Green Lantern a warmer, more personal record of the year. With this desire for excellence, m y generation must agree. O n the other hand, youth must recognize that originality and enthusiasm needs to be tempered by experience and technical know-how. Neither one nor the other can stand alone. Working together, nothing is impossible.

Mrs. Farrell and I wish the best of success to the Class of 1970. It contains some of the finest boys we have ever seen at Proctor. Some reflected the unrest and dissatisfaction with conditions here and abroad which characterized student bodies across the nation this year and this is surely their right. However, in college and afterwards, before they join causes, I hope our graduates will look long and hard at the leaders of these causes and their real motives.

  • VARSITY FOOTBALL

1969 Varsity Football taught a fine understanding of nobility in sports to all of its members. It was a strong group that took punishment without losing stride, but it was also a group that easily balanced grubbing for performance, with holiday spoofing. To guage what each player received in return for the grime he took on his face and the grease he shook from his body, is impossible. But, it is sure that be-cause every man had the same experience, these peo-ple knew a togetherness; this team knew each other; this team was bound together, and that comradeship was good.

    VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY

The '69-'70 Varsity Cross Country season was one of the worst in years. The team won one meet and came in third and fourth in two others, the rest we lost. The highlight of the season was when Co-Captain Beckstrom came in second in the Lakes Region. The season was more of a building year, with five of the eight men on the team being underclassmen. All the same, Coach Jackson supplied the team with a great number of trails to run on. One of the first days of practice was over nine miles long with others consist-ing of runs through swamps and around lakes. Next year should be more profitable with two coaches, Mr. Jackson and Mr. Latham running the show.

    VARSITY HOCKEY

The Varsity Hockey Team got off to a slow start this season due to the fact that we had no goalie. After long hours of hard work, we found that Paul Mallen was the most able of all net minders. Richard Peck also worked hard for us and, at the end of the season, the two were alternating positions.

After the goalie situation appeared to be solved, we started winning, only to be slowed down by wet and windy weather. This raised much havoc with the ice, but nature always wins so we did the best with what we had.

In all, the season was most enjoyable to play, and watch, due to a couple of really close fights. The hockey season wound up at 7-8, but the boxing team was undefeated at 2-0.

    VARSITY SKI TEAM

This year's Varsity Ski Team was not as strong as last year's team. The Nordic, under Mr. Tim Norris, was quite strong, but the Alpine was not as successful. W e expect to have a stronger Alpine team next year because the team was all juniors. The members of the Alpine team were Nystedt, Simonds, Burton, Mc-cClintic and David. The Co-Captains for next year are Nystedt and Traver. The team has quite a bit of depth and a few years of experience, we hope to be very powerful next year.

  • VARSITY LACROSSE

The Varsity Lacrosse Team had a satisfactory season this year with a 6-4 record. After beating Law-rence and Tilton, we lost a close game to Kimball Union Academy. Holderness, Winchendon and St. Paul's all beat us. The next four games were welcome victories. One of these was won in the last ten seconds of play. Our coaches, Mr. Fowler and Mr. Emeny, did a great job in keeping up our spirits when the going was rough.

W e wish the 1971 team the best of luck!

    VARSITY BASEBALL

Following a spring training trip to Curacao, Mr. Morinelli had high hopes for a good season. Record wise, the season wasn't as fruitful as we hoped it would be. Even so, behind our lone pitcher, Captain Bruce Lundquist, the team showed how important spirit and team unity is in any sports activity. After suffering several demoralizing defeats at the end of the season, the team entered the last game with high hopes. The team played their best defensive game of the season even though we lost 9-4. Although we could not bring Mr. Morinelli a winning season in his last year at Proctor, on behalf of the team I wish Mr. Morinelli luck in the future.

  • VARSITY TENNIS

The Varsity Tennis squad achieved an excellent record of nine wins and only three losses during this season. For the second consecutive year, Chris Olson played number one, where his polished performance was beautiful to watch, but deadly to face. Number two was Dave Boyd, who had a fun season. Greg Beck-strom played third man. He had difficulty this year, but his last match was easily the best tennis he had played. Number four, Jon Mansfield, who had the best record of singles on the team. Number five man was Rob Rockwell. Mark Chis-holm played sixth man and Greg Wiener rounded out the squad, both aided the team substantially in close contests. The whole team thanks Mr. Burke for his many talents as a tennis coach, including strong nerves.

This year's Golf Team was composed of two sen-iors, Captain Chip Scott and Bill Anderson, and six underclassmen, Steve Johnson, Parker Hall, Peter Ash, Peter Jackson, Bob Richey and Evan Snyder. Through the fine effort of our coaches, Mr. Maguire and Mr. Anthony, the team was greatly improved over last season. Much appreciation and many thanks are given to these two coaches and we hope that next year's team will be successful.

  • SAILING

Sailing had a late start this year with the first meet against Williston being cancelled because of a foot of ice on the lake. It finally went out the last day of April, just in time to put the boats in the water for a meet with Cardigan Mountain.

The sailors were at a disadvantage for they had only one day of practice before they had two meets with Cardigan Mountain and one with Dublin. Still, they made a good showing against Cardigan Mountain and beat Dublin, taking the first three races from a best out of five meet.

The team this year consisted of six returning sailors, four of w h o m are skippers and nine are new members who have shown a great deal of skill this spring. The team has a lot of spirit and through the coaching of Mr. Knox, they have learned a good deal.

This year, the staff of the Green Lantern sought to achieve a warmer, more personal record of the school year. W e found it far more difficult than to come up with a "catalogue" type publication. It is m y hope that it is a step in the right direction.
