The Space Race was a competition between the Soviet Union (USSR) and the United States for supremacy in spaceflight capability.

USA won the race to the moon with the Apollo 11 mission on July 20,1969. Neil Armstrong and 'Buzz' Aldrin became the first humans to land on the moon.

The Vietnam War was a long, costly conflict between the communist regime of North Vietnam and South Vietnam and its ally, the United States.

More than 3 million people, including 58,000 Americans, were killed in the conflict.

The war in Vietnam became the government’s top priority. Soon after he took office, Present Johnson committed to a full-scale war.

In 1964, Congress authorized the president to take “all necessary measures” to protect American soldiers and their allies from the communist Viet Cong. Within days, the draft began.

The war dragged on, and it divided the nation. Some young people took to the streets in protest, while others fled to Canada to avoid the draft.

Meanwhile, many of their parents formed a “silent majority” in support of the war.

In 1967, Mohamad Ali refused to be inducted into the armed forces, saying “I ain't got no quarrel with those Vietcong.”

Ali was convicted of draft evasion, sentenced to five years in prison, fined $10,000 and banned from boxing for three years.

In 1960, 65 out of every 100 children lived in a family in which the parents were married, the dad worked, and the mom stayed home to look after the house and children.

By 2012, only 22 out of every 100 American kids lived such "married male-breadwinner" families

The decade of space exploration was also full of experimentation with new flavors, textures, and packaging for snacks and meals, including the first use of aluminum cans for food and beverage packaging. These developments led to products like:

Pop-Tarts Spaghetti-Os Pringles

Campbell's Chunky Soups Swedish Fish Starburst

Twizzlers Tic Tac Mints Trident Gum

American Bandstand was broadcast every weekday through the summer of 1963. But in the fall of that year, it became a once-a-week show run on Saturday afternoons.

People tuned in to see new music artists and to learn the latest dance crazes.

Bandstand was one of the few places on television where ethnically-mixed programming could be seen.
