Just for this reason a notion of the art of armour- ers traditionally exists. These people by their hands created and continue creating these fine and redoubtable pieces. Armourers of Toledo and Damascus, of Northern Italy and Germany, and other countries have the world glory. In this line the pieces of Tula's and Zlatoust's masters hold the deserved place. The Museum's collec- tions have kept many remarkable works of armourers from other Russian cities too. The twentieth century has brought many changes in our idea about weapon. It began to associate in mass senses with steel monsters disgorgening smoke and fire, wafting death to thousand and thousand innocent victims. Many years the idea of the weapon-master has been connected only with names of military designers, whose talent was rejected by nobody, but the result of their creativity could be hardly perceived as art. Therefore the creation of the Guild of masters-knifemakers has marked not only an appearance of one more association of weapon fans. It became an important event of our cul- ture. The masters who created it, have put before themselves a high aim of retention of national traditions in this kind of applied art that apparently was transforming in a simple craft. For years of contact with these people I have been filled them with a deep respect for their affairs, for their creativity. The feeling of gratitude causes the fact that they have resolved a hard problem of popularization of weapon skill and commercial interest is not the ques- tion number one for them. I'd like to greet all members of the Guild and readers of magazine and wish them more success in their activity deserving to be supported.
