ALL-TIME GREAT HORSES
1. Man War (1919, 1920): In winning 20 of 21 starts, including the Preakness, Belmont and Travers, he set
five new American track records. His lifetime winnings of $249,465 set a new American record. His only
loss was to Upset in the Sanford Memorial Stakes as a 2- year old. 2. Exterminator (1920): Won 50 of IDO races, and is considered the first great gelding. His wins
included the Kentucky Derby, the Brooklyn, the Pimlico Cup 3 times, and the Saratoga Cup 4 times. 3. Sarazen (1924): Was undefeated as 2-year old. missed the Triple Crown races, but he won handicap races
at 7 different tracks, including the Saranac, Manhattan, and Maryland handicaps. He also beat Epinard and Mad Play in the 3rd International Special.
4. Gallant Fox (1930): As a 3-year old he won nearly everything including the Triple Crown and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. His only loss was to Jim Dandy in the Travers. He also passed Zev as the all-time money winning horse.
5. Equipoise (1930, 1932): Among his many wins were the Whitney, Suburban, and Metropolitan twice. He carried high weights and set a world's record for a circular mile at 1:34 2/5.
6. Sun Beau (1931): Dominated the Chicago area by winning the Arlington Cup, Arlington Handicap, and Hawthorne Gold Cup 3 times in row. He became the world's leading money winner in 1931 with $376,744 lifetime winnings.
7. Top Flight (1931,1932): As a 2 year old she beat fillies and colts alike, with a perfect 7 for 7 record , As a 3 year old she still beat the fillies , but lost 4 races to colts.
8. Omaha (1935): Was not even the best horse of the year, but he did win the Triple Crown and the Dwyer and Classic Stakes.
9. Seabiscuit (1927): Won 11 of 15 starts in 1937 including the San Juan Capistrano, Brooklyn, and Massachusetts on the way to becoming the world's leading money winner with $427 ,730.
10. War Admiral (1937): As 3 year old he had a perfect season winning 8 of 8 races, including the Triple Crown, the Chesapeake Stakes, the Washington Handicap, and the Maryland Special .
11. Whirlaway (1941, 1942): As a 3 year old he won the Triple Crown and the Travers. As a 4 year old he won the Brooklyn and Jockey Club Gold Cup, and set a lifetime earnings record of $561,161.
12. Count Fleet (1942, 1943): As a 3 year oId he won 6 of 6 races including the Triple Crown. His margin of victory in the Belmont 25 lengths.
13. Twilight Tear (1944): As a S year Old she won 14 of 17 starts including a win over Kentucky Derby winner, Pensive, in the Classic Stakes.
14. Busher (1945): As a 3 year old she beat males and females of all ages, winning the Arlington Handicap, Washington Park Handicap, Vanity Handicap, and Hollywood Derby. She won 10 of 13 races, and finished in the money in the other 3, winning $273,735.
15. Assault (1946): Won the Triple Crown as a 3 year old, and the Suburban and Brooklyn as a 4 year old. He became the leading money winner twice, but each time Stymie surpassed him within a month.
16. Gallorette (1946): Voted the best American mare in racing history. She won the Beldame, Bay Shore, Metropolitan, and Brooklyn. She was competitive with colts such as Fighting Step, Pavot, Lucky Draw, and even beat Stymie twice.
17. Armed (1947): won 41 races and, like Assault, became the leading money winner for less than a month until Stymie surpassed him. Armed also beat Assault in a match race.
18. Bewitch (1947): As a 2 year old filly she crossed the line first in 9 of 10 races. She handed Citation his only loss as a 2 year old, but Citation got even with her in the Belmont Futurity.
19. Citation (1947,1948): Won 27 of 29 starts as a 2 and 3 year old. His victories included the Triple Crown and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. He became racing's first millionaire at age 6 by winning the Hollywood Gold Cup. His lifetime earnings totaled $1,085,760.
20. Tom Fool (1951, 1953): Captured the Sanford, Grand Union Hotel , and Futurity Stakes as a 2 year old. His 3 year old year was not as impressive, but as a 4 year old he won 10 of 10 races.His victories in the Metropolitan, Suburban, and Brooklyn were so impressive that there was no betting on his last 4 races.
21. Native Dancer (1952, 1953): Compiled the best lifetime record since Colin in 1908 by winning 21 of 22 starts. His only loss was by a head to Dark Star in the Kentucky Derby, after being bumped in the first turn.
22. Nashua (1954.1955): Surpassed Citation as the al l time money winning horse with $1,288,565. As a 3 year old, Nashua won 10 of 12 starts. He avenged his loss to Swaps in the Kentucky Derby by beating him in the famous Washington Park Match Race.
23. Swaps (1955, 1956): Lost only to Nashua as a 3 year old. As a 4 year old he proved to be one of the fastest horses in history, setting 4 world's records and equaling another, in spite of a bad leg.
24. Round Table (1958): His 43 wins in 66 lifetime starts placed him, first in wins among the top money winning horses. His $1,749,869 placed him first in total earnings until Kelso surpassed him. He set or equaled 11 track records at 7 different tracks during his career.
25. Kelso (1961, 1963): Voted "Horse of the Year" 5 times, 3 more than any other horse until Forego. He became the leading money winner with $1,977 ,896. He won the Jockey Club Gold Cup 5 consecutive times, and still holds the American record at 2 miles. He also won the Woodward 3 times, and finished second once, losing by a nose to arch rival Gun Bow.
26. Cicada (1962): Won the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn, Mother Goose, and Beldame Stakes. She finished her career winning a total of $783,674, which was the most among American fillies or mares.
27. Buckpasser (1966): After losing his opening 3 year old race, he won 13 straight races. He beat the best horses of all ages and set the world's mile record at 1:32 3/5.
28. Damascus (1967): Won 12 of 16 starts as a 3 year old, and a single season record of $817,941. He beat Buckpasser and Dr. Fager in the 1967 Woodward which had attracted one of the best fields for a race in this century.
29. Dr. Fager (1968): Won 7 of 8 starts as a 4 year old, losing only to Damascus in the Brooklyn. Considered by many to be the greatest sprinter of all time, he set the current world's mile record at 1:32 1/5.
30. Secretariat (1972.1973): Won 7 of 9 races and $456,404 as a 2 year old. His first loss was due to a very bad start. and his other loss was the result of a disqualification. As a 3 year old, he won 9 of 12 starts including the Triple Crown, and a single season record of $860,404. He set 4 track records, and equaled another.
31. Ruffian (1974,1975): Lead wire to wire in all of her races until she broke her leg in a match race against Foolish Pleasure. She won all of her other races by at least 2 lengths, running within one second of the track record in all but one of those. As a 3 year old she won the Triple Crown for fillies .
32. Forego (1975,1976): Another great gelding in the class of Exterminator and Kelso. Forego is the only horse besides Kelso to have been named "Horse of the Year" more than twice, doing so in 1974, 1975, and 1976. He won races from 7 furlongs to 2 miles. he accepted high weights, and carried as much as 137 pounds to victory.
33. Seattle Slew (1977,1978): Won his first 9 races as a 2 and 3 year old, and became the first undefeated Triple Crown winner. He lost his next race by 16 lengths, and retired for the year. After many illnesses, he returned in 1978 to defeat Affirmed in the Marlboro and Exceller in the Woodward.
34. Affirmed (1977,1978): Won 7 of 9 races as a 2 year old, losing only to arch rival Alydar twice. As a 3 year old Affirmed won the Triple Crown with Alydar finishing second in all 3 races. Affirmed lost the Travers by a disqualification to Alydar, although no 3 year old ever finished ahead of Affirmed. He set a single season's earnings mark of $901,541, and a year later set a career earnings mark of $2,393,818.
