 Alone tonight.

Running or her lie.

She tears through the woods as ast as she

can, heart beating, trying desperately to

escape the enemy. Questions ll her thoughts.

Where will I nd reuge, a place to hide? Is

there anyone out there who can save me?

Fear and panic consume her as the whispering

thoughts dance around her mind. She’s

desperate or help, or rescue … or escape.

s

I you knew that there was a true hero who could oer you a lasting

escape rom whatever it is that you’re running rom—a hero who

would walk with you, protect your lie, lead you orward, hold you

close, and make you strong—wouldn’t you want him to desperately

search or and rescue you?

“‘Tey will ght against you but will not overcome you, or I

am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the LORD” (Jer. 1:19 NIV ).

Christ boldly says that He stands with you and pursues you as your

rescuer.

14 Escaping thE vampire

My prayer is that through the pages o this book you will hear

the story o the true rescuer. It is this hero who oers you belonging, mystery, love, excitement, and adventure—all the things we are

desperate to nd. May you hear His heart or you and be richly

encouraged, so empowered by His strength and overwhelmed by His

loyalty and love or you!

Troughout the process o writing I have oten prayed or you.

I have no doubt God has specically written words or you here. Words o rescue, hope, encouragement, love … I’m excited to take

this journey with you.

During the year, I speak to hundreds o teen girls at conerences,

and I have the opportunity to share lie with them, hear their stories,

and pray with them. And even though we can’t be together in person

right now, I’ve tried to add little moments called “Just Breathe …”throughout the book where you and I can connect with each other

and with God. Sometimes there will be questions to think about;

sometimes I might ask you just to take a breath, or smile or take a

moment with God. And I do want to hear what the Hero is doing

in your lie. So please add me on Facebook—search or Escaping the

Vampire to nd me—and send me a message!

I believe strongly that God wants to do much inside your lie as

you read this book. So let these conversations between you and me

lead you closer to knowing the heart o your true Immortal Hero—

 Jesus Christ!

Al lure o f Darkness

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said,

“I am the light o the world. I you ollow me,

you won’t have to walk in darkness, because

you will have the light that leads to lie.”

(John 8:12 NL  )

s

I dug through my purse or my little notebook, squinting in the dim

theater light. Attempting to eat popcorn, sip Coke, and rantically

write in the dark is not something I suggest. But I had to jot down

all the thoughts fying through my head about this lm that had

captured so many hearts.

What could possibly be so appealing about a vampire story? I needed

to nd out what so many teens were raving about.

As I watched the movie, I waited tensely or a devious, dark villain

to appear. But he never showed up—at least, not in the way I expected.

Instead I watched Edward, an intriguingly handsome character, sweep

the heroine, Bella, o her eet. Edward was Bella’s dashing prince, a

prince with a bit o modern dark knight. A noble character. Desperate

to love and be loved. Charming, and yet … he was still a vampire.

Does Bella understand that he could

kill her at any moment? Or does she evencare?  In scene ater scene, Bella’s devo-

tion to Edward deepened. By the movie’s

end, I ound mysel intrigued.

As the credits rolled, I gathered

my things and dusted popcorn crumbs

o my scribbled notes. Tat’s when Inoticed dozens o girls still seated, star-

ing at the screen. Tey wanted more.

IN THE bEGINNING

Several weeks ago, I walked into

Borders and saw a long table piled with books on clearance. Nearthe top was a 919-page, hugely scary-looking paperback titled Te

Vampire Book: Te Encyclopedia o the Undead . An evil-looking

anged vampire stared at me rom the ront cover, begging me not

to pick it up.

As I glanced around at shel ater shel o books, I noticed many

titles with the word vampire in them. Vampire lit is hot. When and

how did this renzy begin? And what is ueling the excitement over

this material?

o be honest, my experience with vampires up to this point was

limited. My connection to them beore that day was the impression

I’d gotten as a ve-year-old at Halloween: Tey were ake, scary, and

dangerous. As a result, I’ve steered clear o the anged creatures my

entire lie.

Needless to say, I never dreamed I would pick up a book like

What is behind this

tremendous ascination with

vampires? It is likely that

there is no simple answer to

this question, since the vam-

pire embodies many aspects

related to the human condi-

tion. These include death

(and all o its psychological

ramifcations), immortality,

orbidden sexuality, sexual

power and surrender, inti-

macy, alienation, rebellion,

violence, and a ascination

with the mysterious.—The

Te Vampire Book . But I was in the middle o researching to write

this and thought it would be a good resource. So or one entire day I read, highlighted, and learned more about vampires than I ever

 wished to know.

THE bACk STory

What I learned is that vampire mythology has existed or millennia.

Ancient cultures including the “Mesopotamians, Hebrews, AncientGreeks, and Romans had tales o demons and spirits which are con-

sidered precursors to modern vampires.”2

Clearly, this is not a new phenomenon. I think Solomon said it

best when he wrote, “Tere is nothing new under the sun” (Eccl. 1:9

NIV ). Te same applies to vampires, too.

“Troughout history, vampires have been known … to be dead

humans who returned rom the grave and attacked and sucked the

blood o the living as a means o sustaining themselves.”3 Wow.

Tat’s not a pretty picture! But it certainly matched the image in

my head.

I read urther. From the sixteenth century onward, the myth o

vampires became ingrained into cultural belie systems in Eastern

Europe. Story ater story spread to cultures around the world.

Eventually, the idea o vampires “came to the attention o both the

scholarly community and the public in the West because o such crea-

tures in Eastern Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.”4

Te twenty-rst century surged with interest in vampire books,

movies, V shows, magazines, and websites—Vampire Academy,

Bufy the Vampire Slayer, Te Morganville Vampires Series, rue

Blood, and Blade , to name just a ew.

20 Escaping thE vampire

And then came wilight . Since 2005, Stephenie Meyer’s break-

out series about a amily o morally upright vampires living in Forks, Washington, has sold more than 42

million copies with translations into

thirty-seven dierent languages around

the globe.

Tese upright vampires are a part o

the most recent portrayal o “good-guy vampires” established in ction literature

and media over the last ty years.

And what exactly is a good-guy

vampire? Margaret L. Carter, a scholar

o vampire literature, denes them as

“vampires who act morally when dealing  with mortals, and, as a whole, conorm

their moral perspective to a human ethi-

cal perspective.”5

Many readers and moviegoers have become even more intrigued

by this new image.

Just breathe …

So what do think about this “new image” o vampires?

Does it change the way you see them in your head?

I elt like I had a basic understanding o vampire mythology’s

roots and its rise in popular culture. Te problem was, I still didn’t

understand why it was such a hot trend today. I had to know more.

 Literature Grows

 Fangs

In April 1819, a short story

by John Polidori called “The

 Vampyre” was published in

New Monthly magazine. It is

considered the oundation o

modern vampire fction.

Toward the end o the

nineteenth century, the novel

Dracula by Bram Stoker

ushered in the popular era o

vampire fction that contin-

ues to this day. Stoker drew

heavily upon the accounts

o mythical vampires in

Transylvania and Romania.

I got my answer rom an article

quoting Ken Gelder, author o Reading

the Vampire : “‘America has taken

the vampire story and tied it to teen

romance.’ Rather than being attracted

to the darkness o the vampire, the

emale leads love their anged par-

amours or their essentially decentpersonalities—along with their bad-

boy allure—and are able to get beyond

the whole lust-or-blood thing.”6

Tis, nally, made sense to me. Ater

all, good girls attracted to bad boys is an

old story. Te promise o excitementand the allure o danger is an appealing

combination, particularly i there is a

chance or redemption.

It also explained how something so obviously evil as a vampire

could become the hero o a love story. Ater all, what could be

more impossible—or irresistible—than

a devastatingly handsome, reormed

vampire? Right there is the ormula or

a captivating love story. It’s Romeo and

Juliet (plus angs) all over again.

conerence attendee named rina, an avid an o the wilight series.

Her analysis o the characters and story was so honest and eye-opening

to me, I asked to share her words with you in this book. I think you’ll

see, as I did, how her examination o the books reveals the longing

heart that beats inside each o us or a hero and a protector.

T: kmbery

Hi Kimberly,

I’ve read the entire series and the rst book, Twilight , twice. I was

spellbound with this series…. The eelings that I have or these

characters are unexplainable. No one knows the obsession I have

over these books.

The draw. There’s the average girl, Bella: popular, beautiul, and

talented. There’s a beautiul and perect boy, Edward: extremely

handsome, inamous, talented, but intimidating, smart, not

riendly.

The story. Boy and girl see each other. Girl is drawn to him by his

looks. Boy is drawn to her by his instinct (her blood/his thirst). Boy

is also drawn because o curiosity. She is “dierent”—he can’t read

her thoughts. Boy struggles against his natural instincts with such

intensity he has to fee.

Edward is a NOBLE character. He resists his nature because o

the love he has or his amily. It would cause them problems, and

he knew he would be a disappointment to them. And also as he

gets to know Bella he starts to value her lie more than his own

selsh desires.

Edward alls in love with this average girl, but to him, Bella is

Page 15: 19147997 Escaping the Vampire by Kimberly Powers

extraordinary. He sees her soul and loves it. He does indeed see

her physical beauty when she can’t. Edward sees her as the most

beautiul girl in the world. He has never been so enthralled by

someone. He is amazed at his own eelings or her. He nds the

eelings conusing and dangerous and exciting.

They discover one another in the way it should be, with lots o

talking and asking questions. Their riendship/relationship begins.

I think this is appealing to many girls. It’s just not done much

anymore.Through hours o talking, he starts to trust her and reveals his

secret. He opens up completely, and it’s a big risk to his whole

amily. TRUST becomes a huge issue or both o them.

He PROTECTS her at all costs, even at the price o revealing his

secret.

He becomes VULNERABLE. Sex doesn’t seem to be an issue

because his natural instincts are not the same as other boys’.

Edward’s lust is or blood, Bella’s in particular. But as he discovers

more o who she is, he learns to control that lust and puts her best

interest beore his own.

He becomes SELFLESS. He eels that her very existence is more

vital than his desires. Edward knows that allowing Bella near him

is extremely dangerous, lie threatening. So he lets her in on all thedetails o what a vampire is…. He is hoping all the while that it will

be too rightening and bizarre or her.

He lets her make the CHOICE. I she leaves, it will break his

heart, but he knows it will be or the best and he will not pursue

her. He loves her that much. This is a SACRIFICIAL type o love.

Bella makes her choice to stay. She loves him so much that she

wants to spend eternity with him—meaning she would have to

become what he is, a vampire.

Edward reuses. He will settle or a short time with her until her

natural death, just to be able to be with her. There is the SACRIFICE

again.

Look again at these qualities: Trust. Protection. Selfessness.

Choice. Vulnerability. Sacrice. Love.

Who doesn’t want this in a boyriend? The perect guy with

incredible looks and talent to boot! Perection (except or the

vampire part). He is still fawed because he battles with right versus

wrong and temptation and guilt and lust.

I say these things because by the time you reach the end othese books and she nally is changed into a vampire (in order to

save her lie) you nd yoursel thinking, Wow, fnally, now they can

be happy and have their happily ever ater.

+

I loved rina’s honesty. Trough her email, I came to better

understand wilight . I saw thebooks and lm rom her per-

spective and started to think

about a ew things mysel.

So why do we devour

these books whole and mem-

orize quotes rom the lms?

Perhaps it comes down to two main reasons:

1. Te love story between Bella and Edward is captivating.

2. We desire our own epic love story in real time.

Just breathe …

What do you think it was about Bella and Edward’s story

that drew so many to the books and flm? What do you

love about it?

Page 17: 19147997 Escaping the Vampire by Kimberly Powers

alluRE of DaRknEss 25

Let’s take a close look at Edward. I have to admit, he seems likethe ull package: charming, attentive, noble, and mysterious. His

devotion is evident in the way he talks to Bella, how careully he

protects her. He even watches over her as she sleeps! And his desire to

really know her is fattering. He wants to gure her out.

+ So why do we devour these

books whole and memorize

quotes from the films?+

An article in Vanity Fair  characterizes Edward this way:

“Everything a girl could wantin one dreamy envelope,

Edward is the answer to a

princess’s prayers—doting,

ercely protective, carrying his

beloved great distances in his arms like a groom orever crossing the

honeymoon threshold.”8

We are enthralled by the idea o our very own Edward. Is this as-

cination because he is a vampire? No. We are drawn to him because o

the many awesome qualities he possesses. Let’s look at those qualities

again: rust. Protection. Selfessness. Choice. Vulnerability. Sacrice.

Love. With Edward, Bella is desired. Protected. Loved and ought

or. It’s obvious in his continual attentiveness to her every thought,

his desire to understand who she is. o receive this kind o atten-

tion rom a mystiying, handsome, talented, intelligent guy—and to

have that guy so interested in every detail o what she considers an

otherwise boring lie—would be enough to enrapture any vulnerable

heart. I we’re being honest, it’s the connection we all long or.

But there’s more to it than just connection. Te act that he

is a vampire makes things exciting . A popular blog recently posed

the question, “What is it about a vampire hero that is so irresistible

Page 18: 19147997 Escaping the Vampire by Kimberly Powers

7/30/2019 19147997 Escaping the Vampire by Kimberly Powers

26 Escaping thE vampire

and sexy?” One reader let this revealing comment: “It’s got to be

that irresistible combination o Alpha-ness and possessiveness …o course all mixed in with a huge dose o deep internal torture.”

Edward’s untouchable, “orbidden territory” vampire sel is attrac-

tive. But Edward calls himsel  a killer and a monster. He knows his

tendencies and attraction to Bella are dangerous.

But lots o girls have told me that they admire many qualities

o Edward’s character. He is rom a amily o “good” vampires who control their thirst or human blood. He is chaste and sel-

restrained. He continually holds himsel back rom getting too

physically close to Bella. It is not the vampire’s passion that is

sexy, but his sel-control. Ken Gelder has said that “there is that

sense that because Edward is such a sel-restraining vampire, he’s

not really a vampire.”9

In other words, maybe Edward can’t help who he is, but he can

control what he does and doesn’t allow himsel to do. It’s an admi-

rable example o sel-restraint. We girls love that, don’t we?

And then there’s Bella, the girl next door. She’s clumsy and sel-

mocking. Not totally insecure, but not wildly popular either. I think

we can all relate to her in one way or another.

“It doesn’t surprise me that girls identiy with Bella, a character

that cannot imagine she is lovable,” writes Beth Felker Jones, an

assistant proessor o theology at Wheaton College. “Her clumsi-

ness and willingness to erase hersel orm an apt portrayal o the

sel-understanding o many young women today. Dark romance, a

love that erases the awkward heroine, is an answer to desire and sel-

loathing that draws on the worst cultural assumptions about what it

means to be emale.”10

Looking back on the notes I took while researching vampires, I seeone thing very clearly. At some

point in the late twentieth

century, the vampire’s persona

became a “gray area.” By that,

I mean he was no longer con-

sidered altogether bad. Oh, vampires were still “bad boys”—but it

was cool to like them. Maybe you’ll agree with what Diane Robina,

president o the cable horror channel FEARnet said: “Vampires are

the new rock stars. Tey are the bad boys your parents don’t want

you to date.”11

It’s a truly interesting transormation. Is it just an example o

literary creativity, or could it be just another blurred line between

good and evil? It does seem that we’re having a harder time telling

right rom wrong, truth rom lies these days. You don’t always know

who the villain is when he enters the room. And vampires? Hey, they

might even be the heroes.

So what do we do with all o this? It’s clear that we are so drawn to

this story and others like it. Despite the act—or maybe because o the

act—that Edward is mysterious and dangerous, we’re almost irresistibly

swept up in the adventurous romance. We

so desperately want to experience such a story ourselves. But then the credits roll

or the last page is turned, and we’re back

in our own reality. Our lives are just the

same as they’ve always been. Tere are no

good vampires—or even vampires o any

kind—and Edward remains that characterin our head.

Have you elt this way? Like you

wished you could really live in Bella

and Edward’s world and leave your own

behind? It makes me start to wonder i

there’s actually something more going on here, a deeper reason that we’re all so

attracted to and drawn into this story.

Just breathe …

God thinks that your reality is way more interesting than

Edward and Bella’s. Think o at least three things about

your own lie that you are proud o … maybe it’s people

in your lie, or the way you can make someone smile …

or maybe something unique that makes you, you .

Recently, I was talking with a group o girls ater a conerence.

Teir aces lit up when I mentioned wilight . One o them told me

that she couldn’t stop thinking about the movie. o her, wilight was

an obsession. She began sharing quote ater quote. Soon the whole

Here are some o the com-

ments I’ve heard rom girls

who love Twilight :

 s“I cried . I kept thinking, oh

my gosh, is this guy or

real? He’s not like other

guys.”

 s“Edward is way hot …

sooo cute!”

 s“I liked the romance … I

wish a guy could be that

way with me.”

 s“Maybe what I liked was

the act that they’re not

supposed to be together

but they are.”

s“He’s into what is best or

her … well, most o the

time.”

group joined in—how many lines could they remember? I could see

that they were reliving the adventure together. You could hear it intheir voices and see it in the excitement on their aces.

Ten I asked them about their lives. Who was their true hero?

Who oered them the love, protection, and unending relationship

lled with hope and lie they were desperate or? Tat totally stumped

them; they didn’t have an answer. So then we talked about how no

mortal can unconditionally ulll these things. A ew may come close… but no one oers perection. No one oers love without a price.

So why do our hearts keep longing so hard ater something we can

never nd—something that simply does not exist?

Unless it does. Unless this longing is a hunger or what our souls

were created or. What i our hearts were

created to long or this love because it is

actually out there longing or us? What

i our souls were shaped or Someone?

Someone amazing, who is incredibly

attentive to our every need and who will treat us better than we could

ever imagine. Someone always present in our lives that experiences

lie with us.

You can see the charm o Edward and all he is or Bella. Imagine

having that type o relationship connection in your lie.

For some, this may be a radical thought to wrap your mind

around—but imagine that this iconic, hunky, bad-boy hero Edward

could be outdone so easily by an eternally loving, ercely protective

Savior. Pretty cool thought. Tis ascination with Edward and the draw

he has with so many is just a shadow o the true epic love story oered

by our true Immortal Hero, the Savior o the world, Jesus Christ!

Jennie Yabro o Newsweek

writes, “These vampiresare not so much scary as

noble, fghting against their

inherent natures or the sake

o love.”13

“I dream about being

with you forever.” “Is it long enough just to have a long and happy life with me?”

“If you were smart, I’d say

 you’d stay away from me.”

“So the lion fell in love with the lamb.” “He looks at you like you’re something to eat.”   “Bella, you are

my life now.”

“I don’t have the

strength to stay away

 from you anymore.”

“Then don’t.”

“Everything about

“What if I’m not the hero?

What if I’m the bad guy?”

He oered His lie to provide lie orever with Him.

He reached down rom heaven and rescued me;

he drew me out o deep waters. He rescued me

rom my powerul enemies, rom those who hated

me and were too strong or me. Tey attacked

me at a moment when I was in distress, but the

LORD supported me. He led me to a place o saety; he rescued me because he delights in me.

(Ps. 18:16–19 NL  )

o be respected and intensely loved

is to have someone who is orever loyal

and unselshly true to your heart. Tink about that one. When you experience

this type o undying love … nothing

else compares.

Just breathe …

Oh, I hope you know the amazing love o your true hero!

How does having this kind o love change your lie? Not

sure? Stay with me …

In Teen Vogue , Kristen

Stewart, the actress who

plays Bella, describes themovie like this: “It’s about

what drives you to love.”12
