The Recruiter is adding a new feature, Professional Profile, where we interview recent graduates as they make their way in the corporate world. Our first professional profile is on Mudia Akpobome, a December 2011 College of Business graduate who majored in Management. Do you ever wonder what recent College of Business
graduates are doing? Is there life a er college that
doesn’t involve moving back into your childhood
bedroom or repea ng the ques on, “would you like
fries with that”? Wonder no more! The Recruiter is
adding a new feature, Professional Profile, where we
interview recent graduates as they make their way in
the corporate world.
Our first professional profile is on Mudia Akpobome,
a December 2011 College of Business graduate who
majored in Management. You may remember Mr.
Akpobome as Mudia, the fellow student who would
make announcements in your classroom, on behalf
of the College of Business Student Speaker’s Bureau.
So, where is he now? Well, Mudia Akpobome is
u lizing the knowledge and skills learned and prac ced in these hallowed halls as an
industry recruiter at Aerotek, Inc., a leading provider of recrui ng and staffing services. In
fact, Mudia is one of several UTSA alumni who have expanding careers with Aerotek!
So, how did Mr. Akpobome make the transi on from business student to business profes-
sional, finding an entry-level posi on that could become a fulfilling career? First, he
sought the advice of the career counselors – mee ng with them to have his resume

Mr. Akpobome’s interest was piqued by what he heard about a career with Aerotek and decided to apply for the recruiter posi on.
Prior to the interview, he thoroughly researched the company, “…commi ng to heart Aerotek’s mission statement, values,
industries they served and their products.” He also sought out one of the company’s top employees and asked for insight on how
to best be prepared for the interview (Ac on 18). Mudia’s extensive prepara on paid off and he was offered the posi on of
Recruiter – Commercial Sector (Ac on 20). In January, 2012, he began his career with Aerotek, three weeks a er gradua ng!

As a recruiter for the commercial sector, Mr. Akpobome provides quality customer service to exis ng and prospec ve client
businesses and contractors through:
Sourcing prospec ve candidates via resume databases, outplacement agencies and job fairs.
Screening prospec ve employees for client companies (conduc ng interviews)
Selec ng the most qualified candidates by formula ng behavior and job-related ques ons.
Monitoring candidates on a regular basis a er they have been selected and hired for client companies. Performing extensive
data entry to document employee performance.
On a typical work day, Mudia sources and screens candidates for posi ons with Aerotek’s clients. Since Aerotek is industry specific,
he primarily recruits for the commercial industry (this consists of manufacturing, warehousing & distribu on, produc on and light
technical skilled trade jobs). He spends most of his day sourcing, interviewing, placing and managing candidates in this industry.
When asked to describe how his professional network has grown, Mr. Akpobome stated, “Staffing is all about ‘who you know’ – this
is one of the most important steps in becoming a successful recruiter. “ His recommenda on to current students who are
interested in the recrui ng industry or human resources:
Network, network, network. Connect with other people in the staffing industry via LinkedIn and Twi er and ask them ques ons
(Ac on 15). This will demonstrate to them that you are interested in their industry, and it may even possibly land you a job with
the company of the person you are talking with. I also recommend joining staffing and recrui ng LinkedIn groups that regularly
post staffing industry ar cles so you can begin to gain an understanding of what the staffing industry is all about.
When asked how well he thought UTSA College of Business prepare him for a professional career, Mr. Akpobome responded, “ I
learned many professional and people skills from the UTSA College of Business. These skills helped prepare me for the work force.”
He went on to add that he u lized the services of the Center for Student Professional Development (CSPD) (Ac on 7), saying that If it
were not for the CSPD events, he would not have had the opportunity to meet his current employers at Aerotek. He stated that
he,”… a ended pre y much every CSPD event there was from spring 2011 to the end of December 2011 when I graduated.” He
went on to say, “. I assure you that a ending these events (even when I did not feel like it) is what assisted me in landing a job with
Aerotek right out of college. In fact the event that I discovered Aerotek at was one of those events that I literally ‘did not feel like
going too’, but I forced myself to go, and in return I was awarded with the job.”
So, what did Mudia do to stand out and gain the edge among the other candidates for the recrui ng posi on at Aerotek? He states:
One word: prepara on. I made sure that I knew about the company even to the point that it was as if I had been working there
for years. I explained their services to them in the interview rather than my interviewers having to explain it to me. I believe it
demonstrated that I was truly interested in the company. Know this, if a company calls you into an interview, they want to
hire you, and it is then your job to show them why they want to hire you.
Mr. Akpobome recommends that students in a career search, should, “Follow your heart and your passions. It was not a coincidence
that I ended up working at Aerotek. There were two things that I wanted to do when I graduated, work with people and do sales,
and that is exactly what I am doing at Aerotek.” Obviously, Mudia is well-suited for the posi on as he was awarded the “Rookie
Recruiter of the Year” for 2012!
On a final note, Mudia Akpobome returns to campus frequently to present on corporate panels at CSPD events, to volunteer (Ac on
17) at Career Ac on Program events and to give Aerotek informa on sessions. It warms our hearts to see fresh alums return to give
back to the next classes of COB graduates!
