TITAN POWER FOR THE FARMThe Factory That Has Built a Quarter of a

Million Oil and Gas EnginesExperience Tells The novice makes apoor fanner at first, and his product is of an inferior quality untilhe has had experience. The same is true inmanufacturing, only more so, as the manufac-turer has not nature to help him. The Inter-national Harvester Works at Milwaukee havebeen manufacturing engines for ten years. They have built over 250.000 engines duringthis time more than any other manufac-turer. They have been shipped to all partsof the world and used under the most variableconditions of service. Every year the producthas been improved as experience has shownwhere it could be bettered even if only slightly. This means that every part of a Titan enginethat could possibly break or get out of ordermust have done so in the vast cjuantity ofengines already built and have come to theattention of the Company. The Titan youbuy today protects you against the ordinaryengine illsit is a result of long experienceproduct you can depend upon.Automatic MachineryMeans Standardization No matter howwell a machine is

designed if it isnot well made it will not be a success. It

takes good machinery to produce well fin-ished parts and automatic machinery to pro-duce accurate parts. The International Har-vester Works at Milwaukee are a model forequipment. The very latest automatic ma-chines make Titan parts. They make everysimilar part exactly alike without the slight-est variation so that if a new part is needed,it will fit as good as the old one. Not onlydoes automatic machinery make parts betterbut it makes them cheaper. This is thereason you get so much more with a Titanengine for your money.Titan Inspection After an engine is fin-Means Perfection ished in the Titan plant,it goes through a longsiege of testing. Every part is carefully ad-justed and it is subjected to a severe test runwhich is sure to bring out any faults in theconstruction or material. This is done beforethe paint is put on so nothing is covered up.It is one more protection y(ju have in a Titanengine. This engine is as good as experience, thebest machinery, the best materials and the mostcareful inspection can make it. No guaran-tee could be stronger than the name "Titan".It represents all that is good in an oil engine.

Repairs Can Be Obtained Almost AnywhereThe Value Servicethe kind the Inter-of Service national Harvester Company ofAmerica gives through its eighty-seven branch houses and tliirty-five thousanddealers should not be lost sight of in thepurchase of an engine. In many localities itis of vital importance to the engine owner andshould be considered of equal importance tothe quality of the engine.

    InternationalHarvesterServicetory.

The International Harvesterbranches are convenientlylocated to give the best ser-vice to the surrounding terri-

and there is no place so small or outof the way that cannot be reached from oneor more of the many branches. Supposeyour engine should freeze up some coldnight or through some accident a part wouldbe broken just at the time when you neededpower most, it would only be a matter of aday or two at most till the new part could beobtained from the nearest branch house.More than likely the International Harvesterdealer in your own or neighboring town would

have the part in stock waiting for just suchan occasion. Time means money and the lossof several days or sometimes weeks in delaywaiting for parts or advice, especially whenyou have a gang of men drawing pay for doingnothing, means enough money to nearly payfor the engine. At least the annoyancecaused due to the wait is worth considering. But International Harvester service meansmore than quick repairs. It means that youhave expert farm machine men within easyreach whom you can call on for advice andinstructions for installing and operating ma-chinery by engine power. Often you can getpersonal attention as International Harvestermen are traveling everywhere.Service International Harvester servicea Guarantee is a protection against loss

of time and a conveniencethat you get with the purchase of every Titanengine without extra cost. It is an asset thatcannot be duplicated in any other make ofengine or farm machine. Be sure and get agenuine Titanit bears the I H C trade mark.

Titan Jr. is the most compact and powerfulengine of its weight on the market. It de-velops one full horse power and will do anyof the small jobs that are such hard work ona hot day and take up so much of your time.Pumping the water, turning the grindstone, emery wheel, drill press, running small cornshellers, bone cutters, fanning mills, is justplay for Titan Jr. For small, inexpensive, domestic water plants or spraying outfits,Titan Jr. cannot be equalled. It furnishesplenty of power and is so small and light thatit takes up little space and is easily hauledaround. This is a big point on the smallspray rig.

It is just the thing for the woman to run. It's so simple and easy to operate. She canstart it herself and run it without aid. Itwill relieve her of the drudgery of washing byrunning the washing machine and wringer. In the dairy it will run the cream separator, churn, and pump, in fact, it will pay foritself for this work alone.

Then the boys will appreciate Titan Jr.It takes the labor out of the chores and givesthem an interest in the farm work, besidesteaching them the use of machinery.

You will be surprised at the number of

    111. 1'. Gasoline Engine

diil'erent jobs this little engine can handleand how many backaches and how muchannoyance it can save the whole family.

In construction Titan Jr. is a masterpiece. It combines all thje features that go to make areliable and substantial engine that will givereal service, yet owing to the design, the weighthas been kept down to the mininunn withoutsacrificing power or durability. Like all thelarger Titans, it is four cycle type. Thecylinder is hopper-cooled with a drain cockunderneath for draining in cold weather.Make-and-break ignition is used and batteriesare regularly furnished for the current. Thegovernor is of the hit-and-miss type and muchsimpler in construction than the usual design. The mixer will handle gasoline, benzine, naph-tha, motor spirits or the better grades ofkerosene without change. You don't have tobuy high test gasoline either, as Titan Jr.Inirns the cheaper grades and motor spiritsor good quality kerosene perfectly. You mustsee this little engine to really appreciate it.Titan Jr. is not a toy, but a full fledged 1-H. P.engine that will do a day's work. TITAN POWER FOR THE FARMConnecting Rod The connecting rod is

a Steel Drop Forging of the 1-section typ(\This style of construction gives the greateststrength, with the least weight, and insuresa connecting rod that is proof against buckling. Both the crank.-|)in and piston-pin bearingsare of Phosphor Bronze, and easily adjustable.

Drop-forced Steel Connecting HocThe crank-pin bearings are of the split

box type, bolted to the connecting rod by twoheavy bolts secured by lock nuts and cotterpins. The piston-pin bearing is a Split BronzeBushing, held in place by a set screw. Thewear is taken up by a bolt secured by a locknut and cotter pin.

Crank ShaftThe crank shaft is a SingleSteel Drop Forging without a weld, accuratelymachined to size and highly polished. Titan

Drop-forged Steil Crank Shaftcrank shafts are made with a liberal factor ofsafety and can be relied on to withstand anystrain under which the engine could operate.

Crank-Shaft Bearings The crank-shaftbearings are (jf Phosphor Bronze, the bestanti-friction metal known, and made extrathick and long. They fit snugly into the

Phosphor Bronze Crank-Shaft Bushingsengine base and are held tightly in place byset screws. They are first machined to size, then Hand Scraped to a perfect fit. Thismakes the best anti-friction bearing that itis possible to put in an engine. Each bushingis lubricated by a grease cup which is pipedout within easy reach.

FlywheelsThe flywheels are made largein diameter, with Split Hubs. Both clampedand keyed to the crank (shaft so that it ispractically impossible for them to become loose, though they may be easily removed ifnecessary. The pulley is il)olted on one fly-wheel, the governor on the other.

Valve GearThe valve gear is verysimple and ell'ective. It operates in a straightline and without requiring any fine adjust-ments. The valve rod, because of the con-struction of the cam upon which the camroller turns. Serves the Double Purpose ofSnapping the Tgnitor and Opening the ExhaustValve. This reduces the number of parts.

Cyhnder Head Showing Ignition Trip and Valve GearThe valves are carefully ground into their

seats. The heads are of large diameter whichallow the gas to enter freely and exhaust fromthe cylinder. The inlet-valve check prevents fuel fromentering the cylinder during the period whenthe governor cuts out explosions. This Elim-inates Waste of Fuel, and enables the gover-nor to regulate the fuel in proportion to theload.

Side and I'.nd View of Ignitor MagnetoIgnition Ignition is make-and-break

type, current being furnished by a gear drivenmagneto of the highest grade. No batteriesare necessary with these engines as they can bereadily started on the magneto. This eliminatesgreat waste in the replacement of batteries.

Battery and Tool BoxFinishThe neat design and finish give

Titan engines a very handsome appearance, though we do not believe in making ourcustomers pay for unnecessary labor in thisrespect, as no amount of extra finish can in-crease the efficiency of an engine. They areattractively enameled in the standard ox bloodred and Brewster green with gold striping.35

TITAN POWER FOR THE FARMEngine FrameManufacturing expense

or cost of material have not been consideredwhere a part could be improved or made moredurable. The engine frame consists of two

Engine Frame and Sub-basemain castingsbase and sub-base. Thismethod of construction is used to save un-necessary repairs and expense. The basecarries all the working parts, while the sub-base forms a rigid support and can be securelybolted to a foundation when used for station-ary work. The working parts, with the ex-ception of the water pump, are all locatedon the right hand side, and are readily access-ible for inspection or cleaning. All the Partsare Numbered and are Easily Removable,so that by giving these Numbers, DuplicateParts, Guaranteed to Fit as Accurately asthe Originals, can be Quickly Obtained.

CylinderThe cylinder is cast from aspecial quality of close-grained grey iron. As

the power. There are no projections otherthan the ignitor, which is designed to preventheating. Provision is made for the cooUngwater to flow around the valve seats and partsin the head.

PistonThe piston is of the trunk typeand extra long. The Wrist Pin is at the'enter instead of at the end, so that the pistonannot wear to a taper. A suiJitlementalannot wear to a taper. A suiJitlemental

Piston and Lap-Joint Piston RingsThe piston pin is held securely in place bytwo set-screws with lock nuts. Instead of thecustomary three piston rings, these enginesare equipped with four rings made with lapjoints to hold the compression more perfectly.

Connecting RodThe connecting rod isof drop-forged steel, carefully machined andpolished. The crank pin box on the smallersizes is of Phosphor Bronze; large sizes.

    TITAN POWER FOR THE FARM

Titan Split Hub Flywheel Working Parts of Titan Horizontal Engine, without MagnetoCrank-Shaft BearingsThe crank-shaft

bearings are made of the best anti-frictionmetal and can be easily adjusted to take upwear.

These bearings are extra heavy and long, machine finished and Hand-Scraped to aperfect fit. They are of large diameter, thoroughly lubricated by oil cups of amplecapacity. They are set into the main framein such a manner that the strain is carried bythe heavy engine frame and not on the capbolts.

FlywheelsThe flywheels are of the SpHtHub Type, made large in diameter and heavy, and are both keyed and locked to the cranksiiaft by the compression bolts in the hub, sothere is no danger of their becoming loose, yet they can be easily removed if necessary.Provision is made for attaching a belt pulleyon either or both wheels.

ValvesThe exhaust valve is mechan-ically operated. The stem is steel with thehead cast on, making a one-piece valve of thehighest wearing qualities. The head is largein area so that the gases are quickly exhaustedfrom the cyhnder when the valve is opened.

Inlet ValveA special new feature onthese engines is the improved inlet valve, which prevents the valve vibrating and pound-ing on the seat during the suction stroke.

The valve stem is supplied with a plungeror piston which operates in a small cylinderequipped with a pet cock for regulating theair cushion. When the valve opens, theplunger creates a suction behind it so that thevalve closes tight without chattering on the

seat when tlie suction in the engine cylinderceases and allows the valve to close.

Valve MechanismThe valve mechan-ism is very simple and operates in a straightline. There are no delicate or complicatedconnections to get out of adjustment.

The cam for the ignitor eccentric is caston the large gear. This gear is made with asplit hub and is both keyed and bolted to theshaft and providi-d with a locking ring whichslips over the end of the shaft.

Oil MixerThis mixer is especially de-signed and constructed to operate on thelower grade fuels. It is very Simple in Designand can be Relied on Under all Conditionsof Weather or Fuel. It is designed to operateon kerosene, distillate, gas oil or solar oil, butWill Handle Any of the Higher Grade FuelsSuch as Gasoline, Motor Spirit or NaphthaEqually Well. IgnitorThe ignitor electrodes are madefrom steel, and the Ignition Points are Madefrom a Special Metal that will withstand theheat of the spark, as well as the effects ofcorrosion and oxidation.

    STATIOHARY

End and Side View of IgnitorThe ignitor is directly in the path of en-

tering charges, which aids in keeping theignitor points clean and cool, besides brushingolT any soot that may have been depositedupon them. By Removing Two Nuts theIgnitor Plug May be Easily Removed fromthe cylinder for inspection.

Ignitor Mechanism^ The ignitor mech-anism on Titan horizontal engines is extremelysimple. The ignitor push rod is positive inits action and is operated by an eccentric onthe half-speed gear. The contact points canbe adjusted for early or late ignition by theadjustable sleeve on the push rod.

GovernorThe throttling governor actson a butlerlly valve in the intake passage sothat the fuel used is proportional to the load. The speed variation is very slight.

Starting CamTitan horizontal enginesare equipped with a small auxiliary relief camon the exhaust cam operated by a small lever

Compression Relief Camlocated on the exhaust push rod so that, instarting, the engine does not have to be turnedagainst full compression.

Fuel PumpThe fuel pump is of theplunger type and Entirely Constructed of
