FOOD AND NUTRITION SITUATION WEST AFRICA FERTILIZER WATCH PROVIDING WEEKLY INFORMATION ON THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE WEST AFRICA FERTILIZER MARKET 19 JUNE 2020 – BULLETIN NO. 11 HIGHLIGHTS The COVID-19 pandemic appears to be gaining momentum in West Africa, with +23% increase in new cases recorded during the week. Preventive restrictions are being maintained or tightened. Coordinated responses to support the agricultural sector and regional trade: on 18 June, ECOWAS presented the World Bank’s new USD 500 million, West Africa Food Systems Resilient Program (FSRP); announced on June 8, the AfDB’s Feed Africa Response to Covid-19 (FAREC) will support, among other things, the provision of key agricultural inputs through smart subsidies. Fertilizer distribution continues even “with COVID”. Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal are preparing to import remaining volumes to meet this year’s demand. The situation is not as good in Mali and Niger. Prices of agricultural products remain stable (ROAC/WAGN). Food supplies are generally satisfied, except in pockets of food insecurity that the Food Security Network anticipates will spread in the next few months (see map below). Excluding subsidy programs and cash crop markets, the purchasing power and access to fertilizers of most fragile small-scale agricultural producers will be sharply reduced. From July 2020 , the Fertilizer Watches in West Africa and East and Southern Africa will be brought together and extended to an Africa Fertilizer Watch covering 28 countries in sub- Saharan Africa.
