FSU NATIONAL RANkINg IN 2020 U.S. NEWS

Florida State University soared eight spots to No. 18 among national public universities in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings, meetng and well exceeding its goal of joining the Top 25. It’s the greatest single-year improvement in University history.

FSU has risen 25 spots among public universities since placing No. 43 in 2016. FSU moved up to No. 38 in the 2017 list and then to 33 on the 2018 list. Last year, FSU ranked No. 26 among public universities.

How did this happen? Provost McCrorie explains: “Student success is at the heart of everything we do here. For example, FSU hired 125 new faculty last fall to improve class size and research. Now more than 50 percent of FSU’s classes are smaller than 20 students.”

Florida State’s four-year graduation rate of 72 percent ranks among the Top 10 public universities in the country and is No. 1 in Florida.

NOVEmBER 2019

When I learned that Florida State had moved to number 18 in the rankings of the U.S. News and World Report for public universities—a leap of eight ranks in one year—I was in Paris. A few days later I traveled to Florence and visited the FSU Study Center. There we were able to celebrate the good news with other Seminoles in another part of the world. What a sense of pride we all shared! Thanks to the leadership of President Thrasher and Provost McRorie….and thanks for the hard work of many faculty, staff, alumni, and students—both current and past—who laid the groundwork for this outstanding accomplishment.

The retired faculty and staff contribute to the University in a number of ways. One way is through financial contributions. During the Raise the Torch campaign--celebrated in 2018—it was reported by the FSU Foundation that a total number of 678 retired faculty and staff contributed $5,401,547 to the University. You have the opportunity through ARF to contribute to both the Southern Scholarship Foundation and the Bernard Sliger Presidential Scholarship Fund. We encourage you to make these voluntary contributions using the form in our Retiree Journal.

We hope you continue to take advantage of the programs of the Association. The Holiday Reception at the President’s House is by invitation only to dues-paying members of the Association. In the Spring our Barbecue will be held in March at the Seminole Reservation and our Spring Luncheon will be held in the Alumni Center Ballroom in May.

Your Nominating Committee will be meeting in January. The committee is chaired by Past President Jim Melton and includes Max Carraway, Carolyn Shackelford, Tom Knowles, and Ivy Mitchell. A nominee needs to be a member in good standing of the Association who has agreed to be a candidate for the office. Information about the roles of Board members can be found on our website: http://retiredfaculty.fsu.edu A Directory of the Board Members can be found in the back of the Retiree Journal.

I would like to thank Dr. Fanchon Funk, Genevieve Scott, and Dr. Freddie Groomes-McLendon for spearheading the drive to collect non-perishable items for the Southern Scholarship houses at our Fall Luncheon. And, thank you to all our members who brought items to be distributed among the student housing facilities. We are always happy to have representatives from the Southern Scholarship Foundation join us for our luncheons. We continue to support Dr. Shawn Woodin and Kristie Teal for the work they do every day with this valuable program that serves so many Florida students.

We hope you find a way to become involved with the Retired Faculty Association and with the University. Keep the Torch burning!

All the best,

The Association of Retirement Organizations in higher Education (AROHE) has announced several exciting programs for the coming months. The AROHE Travel Institute, a program to help connect fellow colleagues and academia retirees in meaningful and thought-provoking educational travel opportunities, is in the planning stage.

The AROHE 10th Biennial Conference is sched-uled for October 18-20, 2020, at Arizona State University in Tempe.

Several websites addressing life after retirement were recently provided:

I’m Retired. What Should I Do Now? https://tinyurl.com/y2aokl6z

How People Who Love Helping Kids Can Create Meaningful Retirements https://tinurl.com/y5w45yzo

Top Ten Financial Scams Targeting older Adults https://tinyurl.com/pt6ddog

We are reminded that AROHE’s Mantra is “Trans-forming Retirement”. Recent notes from the current President included a Michelangelo quote, “The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.”

Together, FSU ARF members will continue to aim high!

NOVEmBER 2019

It should be no surprise that the only U.S. col-legiate band to participate in the 75th anniver-sary of the D-Day Landings would be our own Marching Chiefs! My excitement grew as my coach pulled out of Victoria Station in London en route to Paris. My first stop had been Lon-don so that I could see the musical “Hamilton”. We rolled through the Kent Countryside toward the Chunnel (an experience in itself ), then from Normandy to Paris.

The venue for the initial concert was the garden of the Trocadero. With the Chiefs arranged

ready to play, the sky opened. The rain poured, and the concert began. The music sounded wonderful. The lovely uniforms were protected by transparent raincoats, so that the bright garnet colors could be seen. The majorettes twirled, while the flag corps performed their pom-pom routine. Our famous conductors, Doctors Patrick Dunnigan and David Plack, as well as the drum majors directed the concert. Dean Patricia Flowers looked on proudly. An appreciative audi-ence of Marching Chiefs’ alumni, parents, and College of Music personnel stood in the down-pour enjoying the concert! Many photos were taken, with the Eiffel Tower in the background—just across the Seine River.

After some sightseeing adventures, the Chiefs were off to their main event—the mega celebration of the D-Day Landings at the Normandy Beaches. Many dignitaries arrived for the ceremony and the march-by, in which the Marching Chiefs took part. A wreath laying ceremony at the American Cemetery above Omaha Beach closed the activities in Normandy.

On a wide plaza the Chiefs were arranged in concert formation behind an impressive banner. A short rain shower cleared the air, the sun burst forth, the concert began. In addition to our F.S.U. Chiefs’ followers we had some French admirers who were aware of publicity about the concert. We had a variety of conductors, including Colonel Arnald D. Gabriel, Conductor Emeritus of the United States Air Force Band. Colonel Gabriel had been a young soldier in Europe during WWII and was reliving some memories in Norman-dy and Paris. When the Chiefs played the “Fight Song”, the French ladies sitting with us joined in doing the Seminole Chop! The brass choir from the band stepped forth and repeated the moving concert they had played at the American Cemetery in Normandy. Of course, the final number was “The Hymn to the Garnet and the Gold”. Our new French friends linked arms and swayed along with us as we sang that lovely tune. This closed a grand afternoon, after which we all came home.

Back in Paris there was more sightseeing. I en-countered some Chiefs at the Galeries Lafayette department store, identifiable by their F.S.U. tee shirts. We had a little reunion amid the latest Paris fashions! The final concert took place in the Park du André Citroën, known for its archi-tecturally designed gardens. The park is some distance from the city center; I navigated the Paris Metro to reach the stop sharing the name of the park. In my best F.S.U. French I asked directions to the Park—and was actually under-stood!

A group of Chiefs went to Versailles.

NOVEmBER 2019

In 1907, the Florida Female College in Tallahassee hired an innovative bachelor as its business manager. One of the problems John Gabriel Kellum tackled early on was finding an economical means to dispose of food waste from the dining hall. He bought 3 pigs and housed them in pens convenient to the dining hall, but far enough away to be unobtrusive to sight and smell. This was the beginning of the FSCW farm.

In1917, amid the rumblings of an impending war, Kellum expanded farm operations at the college (now known as the Florida State College for Women) creat-ing a small dairy to supply the dining hall with milk. He started with 25 cows. By 1945 when Kellum re-tired there were 250 cows on the farm producing 360 gallons of milk per day. Milk in excess of the College’s needs was sold to local dairies. Vegetable gardens were added during World War I to ensure the students had a reliable source of fresh produce.

The May 30, 1930 edition of the Florida Flambeau reported the college farm was producing “cabbage and other vegetables, cows, pigs, and chickens” for the din-ing room. The poultry operation was started in 1924 and eventually had 2,000 chickens.

One of Kellum’s priorities throughout his 38 years at the college was transforming the drab grounds of the campus into a beautiful landscape conducive to aca-demic pursuits. He established a nursery at the farm to provide sod, trees, and shrubs. According to Gerald Ensley, by the time Kellum retired the women’s college was considered to be one of the most beautiful cam-puses in the Nation.

The original farm was located on the west most portion of the FSCW campus in the general area of where the student union facilities are located today. In the midst of the Great Depression, 757 acres of farmland located a few miles southwest of the college was purchased. The construction of new farm facilities for the college was approved for funding by the Federal Emergency

Relief Administration and work began immediately. By 1935 a new dairy barn, silos, and other facilities were ready for occupancy and the farm operation was moved off the main campus.

J. P. Love managed the farm for 37 years. His son, J. P. Love, Jr., became a professor at FSU (Social Work, 1960-1990).

Although the farm continued in operation for over a decade after FSCW became the Florida State Univer-sity in 1947, it was no longer a practical source to sup-ply food for the burgeoning student population. The farm operations were gradually phased out. As the available land on the main campus became scarce, the southwest farmlands were diverted to oth-er uses. Some of the land acquired in the 1930s was assigned to FAMU for agricultural uses. The FSU farmland was subsequently used for a trailer park, In-novation Park, the FSU Golf Course, WFSU Broad-cast Center, & the College of Engineering.

John Gabriel Kel-lum, FSCW busi-ness manager, started the farm as well as a bakery, laundry, print shop, bookstore, soda shop, post office, and student bank.

Founded with a $100 million gift from Jan Moran and The Jim Moran Foundation in December 2015, it’s been a period of rapid growth for the school-turned-college.

The school opened its doors in fall 2017 with a class of 80 students and watched its first graduates col-lect their degrees in spring 2019. There are now about 760 students, 25 faculty and 11 staff members.

The college, which offers three undergraduate majors (commercial, social and retail entrepreneur-ship), welcomed its first class of graduate students this fall in the new Master of Science degree pro-gram in Retail Entrepreneurship with a major in Textiles and Apparel Entrepreneurship. The addition of a graduate program allowed the school to begin the process of becoming a college.

Jim Moran Professor Susan Fiorito, the new college’s dean, was the school’s founding director and has led its transition to college status. Fiorito said the achievement couldn’t have happened without the hard work of many.

“Set atop a commanding hill, surrounded by towering magnolias and sprawling live oaks The Grove Museum in Tallahassee explores the legacy of nearly two centuries of the Call and Collins families, who as public servants, preservationist, and entrepreneurs left an indelible mark on Flori-da and our nation’s history.

From slavery to Civil rights, and from private home to public house, the story of the Grove speaks to critical moments that define the American experience.” (1)

On Wednesday September 25, 2019, members of the Retired Association visited The Grove Mu-seum. I have been asked to repeat this tour in February 2020.

ARF membership

Policy

NOVEmBER 2019

Effective with the by-laws that were adopted two years ago, ARF’s fiscal year is now defined as June 1-May 31. New memberships and membership renewals received anytime between these dates apply only to the current fiscal year. For example, if you paid membership dues anytime during our 2018-2019 fiscal year (June 1, 2018 thrugh May 31, 2019) then your membeship was valid until June 1, 2019. For membeship during fiscal year 2019--2020, dues have to be paid on or afer June 1, 2019.

Because our accounting system is not very sophisticated, based as it is on a simple Excel spreadsheet, it is not possible to accept new memberships or renewals for the next fiscal year in advance. In other words, you will not be able to join ARF for 2019-2020 or renew your membership for 2019-2020 prior to June 1, 2019.

This raises the issue of members who make multiple payments during the year. Because of the above policy on advance renewals, these overpayments cannot be applied to the following fiscal year. A number of years ago, the ARF Board addressed the question of overpayments and multiple payments during a fiscal year,

The Board adopted a policy against refunding overpayments or multiple payments of membership dues. This decision was made because of the accounting challenges involved given our simple accounting system and the mailing costs. Instead these overpayments and multiple payments are treated as donations to ARF. Keep in mind, however, that because we are not a 501(c) organization, these donations are not tax-deductible.

If you are ever in doubt as to whether you have paid dues for the current year, please do not hesitate to contact me by email to inquire. It takes very little time and effort on my part to check your status and to respond to you, and unless I am out of town and away from my records, I will respond quite promptly. My email address is [email protected], and I’m always happy to hear from you and to answer any questions or address any problems you might have about ARF. While I prefer to communicate by email, for those members not having access to email, my telephone number is (850) 933-7653.
