Gulbarg Society massacre:Life sentence should have been given to

all convicts, Zakia Jafri saysAHMEDABAD: Voicing dissat-isfaction over the court verdictin theGulbarg Societymassacre case, Zakia Jafri,  thewife of slain Congress leaderEhsan Jafri, on Friday said lifesentence should have beenawarded to all the convicts.

However, her sonTanvi Jafri said there was defi-nitely “some sense of closure”at the convictions but it wouldhave to be seen why some ofthe accused were not convicted.

“We will definitely

contest in the high court someof the acquittals,” he said.

Zakia, the wife of theformer MP, clearly expressed her“dissatisfaction” with the ver-dict saying that she had seenthe violent crime and felt that“life sentence should have beenawarded to all the accused andnot some of them.”

Tanvi said a messageshould go out to the nation thatthe law will not tolerate suchthings.“We all know, the mas-sacre was one of the harshest

things that happened to the vic-tims. The message should go tothe nation that this country, thelegal system, will not toleratesuch things, he added.

Taniv also felt that therewas strong evidence in favour ofa conspiracy angle in theGulbarga case like the incident atNaroda Patiya. Former SIT chiefR K Raghavan, who had probedthe incident, welcomed thejudgement. However, he said hewas yet to see the copy of theorder.

Teesta Setalvad to appeal SITcourt’s sentences of Gulberg massacre convicts

Terming the verdict in theGulberg Society massacre as“diluted and weak”, civil rightsactivist Teesta Setalvad on Fri-day said she would appealagainst it.

A Special Investiga-tion Team (SIT) court sentenced11 of the 24 convicted to life injail for burning 69 people todeath, including then MP EshanJafri on February 28, 2002, whencommunal frenzy grippedGujarat following the Godhracarnage. “11 people had to begiven life imprisonment sincethey were convicted in seriousoffences, but the biggest disap-pointment for us (was) that restof them including those 12people… have been given sevenyears of imprisonment,”Setalvad said. The court further

awarded a 10 year jail term to oneconvicted for lesser offenceswhile 12 others were givenseven-year sentences each.

“We believe, when aperson is convicted under Sec-tion 436 of wilful arson and 149,then there should have been alife imprisonment under thesealso. And in that sense, it is verymuch diluted judgement and aweak judgement to which we willsurely be appealing,” she said.

Setalvad said that theyhad also asked for compensa-tion for the survivors under Sec-tion 357 of the Criminal Proce-dure Code.

“We don’t know howthe judge has dealt with it.”

Though is acknowl-edged the day was the “dark-est” in the history of civil soci-

ety, the SIT court rejected theprosecution’s demands for thedeath penalty for all the con-victed.

The court said it hasdecided to award imprisonmentfor life without any time frame to11 of the accused, who were con-victed for murder, while request-ing the state not to use its powerto remit the sentence after 14years of imprisonment.

The massacre, whichtook place when Narendra Modiwas the Gujarat chief minister, shook the nation when a mob of400 people set about attacking theGulberg society in the heart ofAhmedabad.

It was one of the ninecases of the 2002 Gujarat riotsprobed by the Supreme Court-appointed SIT.
