From the Rabbi Rabbi Cy Stanway The synagogue goes by many names. There is ‘Beit Knesset’ - place of coming together. There is ‘Beit Tefillah’ - place of worship and prayer. And there is ‘Beit Midrash’ - a place of learning. This month, I want to share with you my thoughts on this last ascrip- on - a place of learning. Learning is oſten mul-faceted. There is didacc learning which is the learning of facts and figures. Such learning forms the foundaon for deeper thinking and having a starng point that is shared among stu- dents. And there is a deeper kind of learning that touches the soul. In Jewish tradion, it is oſten based on a piece of text and that text takes us on a journey when we read our own experiences and struggles through its lens. Recently I began an adult study in Pirke Avot on Wednesdays and added a second class in the evenings. Something wonderful happened. Sure, there was lots of textual learning but there is also something intangible but very real. There is now learning on a spiritual level. Through shared text we are opening ourselves up to the real possibilies of self improvement, to deeper connecons to ourselves and one another and to a great living engagement with Judaism in our daily lives. It is quite remarkable to see. And, this is where the invitaon comes in. You are invited to join me for either class. The Wednesday morning class meets every Wednesday at 10 am and the evening class meets every other Wednesday at 7 PM. (But check the calendars for the dates). This is a wonderful opportunity to turn Jewish knowledge into Jewish living and Jewish spiritual- ity. I look forward to taking that journey with you. 180 Lincoln Ave Elberon. The synagogue goes by many names. There is ‘Beit Knesset’ - place of coming together. There is ‘Beit Tefillah’ - place of worship and prayer. And there is ‘Beit Midrash’ - a place of learning. This month, I want to share with you my thoughts on this last ascrip-tion - a place of learning.

Learning is often multi-faceted. There is didactic learning which is the learning of facts and figures. Such learning forms the foundation

for deeper thinking and having a starting point that is shared among stu-dents. And there is a deeper kind of learning that touches the soul. In Jewish

tradition, it is often based on a piece of text and that text takes us on a journey when we read our own experiences and struggles through its lens.

Recently I began an adult study in Pirke Avot on Wednesdays and added a second class in the evenings. Something wonderful happened. Sure, there was lots of textual learning but there is also something intangible but very real. There is now learning on a spiritual level. Through shared text we are opening ourselves up to the real possibilities of self improvement, to deeper connections to ourselves and one another and to a great living engagement with Judaism in our daily lives. It is quite remarkable to see.

And, this is where the invitation comes in. You are invited to join me for either class. The Wednesday morning class meets every Wednesday at 10 am and the evening class meets every other Wednesday at 7 PM. (But check the calendars for the dates).

This is a wonderful opportunity to turn Jewish knowledge into Jewish living and Jewish spiritual-ity. I look forward to taking that journey with you.

From the Temple President Dr. Barry Edison

T he new year has begun and we Jews must prepare for our next big holiday. That, of course, being The Super Bowl. I am not sure when this special Sunday became a holiday. However it is now a day almost every American celebrates, no matter your race,

religion, or level of sports interest.

In honor of the Super Bowl and being Jewish I did some research to find connections between The Big Game and Judaism. My first question was “How many Jews have played in the Super Bowl?” I tried and could not get a definite answer. I did find out both teams who played in last year’s game, The Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots, are owned by Jews….Jeffrey Lurie of The Eagles and Robert Kraft of The Patriots. Also last year’s game was hosted in Minnesota Vikings stadium, whose team is owned by a New Jersey Jewish family, The Wilfs. In fact 9 out of the 32 National Football League’s owners are Jewish.

I did find a connection between Jewish perform-ers and the Super Bowl Halftime Show. In 2014 Bruno Mars performed. He is ¼ Jewish. The fol-lowing year Lenny Kravitz rocked the big stage. He is ½ Jewish. (Does the Adam Sandler Hanuk-kah come to mind?)

Joanne and I will be hosting a Super Bowl par-ty at our home for our Religious School students and their parents. The Super Bowl is February 3. Come over and let’s celebrate. Let me know if you’re coming by emailing me at [email protected].

One of the current trends is the idea of ‘finding joy’ - while this generally applies to things, I am here to tell you there is so very much joy in the halls of our Eisenberg Bierman Religious School and when we go out as a group.

The highlight of this past month was the primary Shabbat Service that took place along with the installation of our new Board of Trustees. The youngest group in our school, they led our Shabbat Service with confidence and ‘kavana’ (intention). It was actually joyous to see the pride shine from the students and their families. After, the oneg was abuzz with congregants marveling at the service and new faces introducing themselves and making new friends.

Our older kids got together this month at an amazing fun filled ven-ue called Knockerball. About 15 kids from grades 4-8 got to hang out together while they played human foosball, human hungry hippos, air hockey with the Rabbi, giant billiards and of course, knock-erball soccer.

Finding joy is an interesting idea...one that takes a bit of effort, believe it or not. We often take for grant-ed that we are tired or stressed, but if we stop to find joy, we do! It is all around us when we look. These TBM kids whether they are learning at school, leading services, or hang-ing out together outside of school are giving us tons of opportunities to notice joy...and I am paying at-tention :)

It was a wonderful Shabbat Together program at the home of Kara and Damon Zappacosta late December. About 65 children and parents came together to share a unique Shabbat experience singing, learning about tzedakah, making their own Kiddush cups and, of course, eating. We plan to have several of these get-togethers during the year so keep an eye out! Everyone is welcome to come!

PURIM IS COMING!

Purim begins on the evening of March 20th. Temple Beth Miriam will continue the custom of fulfill-ing the Purim mitzvah of Misloach Manot, the tradition of giving friends and family yummy

gifts to spread the joy of the holiday. The Purim bags for temple members will remain the same at $4.00 each.

You will receive a letter of explanation; an order form; a two-sided list of temple members, staff, and teachers; and a list of those people you sent baskets to in 2018. Please indicate the names of people you wish to give Purim baskets to this year and send the order form and lists back to the temple by Thursday, January 31, 2019 with your full payment. You may donate your basket, give baskets to non-temple members ($10.00 each), and reciprocate with other temple members, as described in the letter.

You don’t want to miss out on being a part of this wonderful tradition and donating to the temple at the same time!

Thanking you in advance,

Wendy Sloter for the Purim Committee

Membership Committee NewsTake a look through this month’s bulletin for some terrific programs! We have other programs planned and hope you take advantage of them.

We are also responsive to YOUR ideas. Have something you would love to see happen at the temple program-wise? We welcome all ideas and will see if it is something we can do. Just email your idea to [email protected].

“It is a tree of life to all who grasp it, and whoever holds on to it is happy; its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all it paths are peace.” (Proverbs 3:17-18)

Torah usually refers to the pentateuch, the first five books of the Hebrew Bible – Genesis, Exo-dus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These books make up the story of the Jewish peo-ple. These ancient stories touch upon science, history, philosophy, ritual and ethics. Included are stories of individuals, families, wars, slavery and more. Virtually no subject was taboo for torah. Running through these stories is the unique lens through which the Jewish people would come to view their world and their God.
