General points:• Muon filters are made of iron blocks

which have been recuperated from WANF. Blocs are being cleaned and painted at present.

• The large blocks (FT1688) are of (L,W,H): 159.7±0.3 79.7±0.3 80±0.8 cm3

• They iron walls have to be installed within an envelope 82cm

->Each block must be positioned with a precision of ±2mm along the beam axis

-> Special tooling is required to position the blocks for building the iron walls

Muon Filter Installation Precision frame: • The frame will be positioned on concrete blocks • The guides will be precisely adjusted by means of a theodolite (?)• The three filters of one half of the system will be mounted together

Sequence:• Iron wall towards the cryogenics is mounted first, then the other

side

Sequence (cont.):• After the mounting of the walls

– Boardings will be mounted which ensure sufficient seismic stability – plugs around the beam-pipe will be mounted (to reduce the particle

rate)

Sequence (cont.):• Filter behind station 5 (MF4) is mounted last, once the cryoline

installation through RB86 is finished and the quay is removed

(August 2004)

Resources:

• Expenses for muon filter installation and tooling are covered by the infrastructure budget

• Work on muon filter installation will be carried out by the LHCb experimental area team between February and September 2004

• It requires 3-4 people (including crane driver) for about 7 months

-> about 120 man weeks

Work to be done:• Drawings (Pierre Jouvel):

– Design and production drawings for support of MF 4 (1 month)

– Production drawings of tooling for filter construction (3 months)

– Production drawings for the boarding (2 months)

– Design for plugs between filters and beampipe support (2 months)

• Calculations (Joao Batista):– Seismic stability of the Filters (1.5 months)

– Seismic stability of the Support structures (1.5 months)

->Most of this work should be finished by November 2003

-> Schedule is very tight !
