Duke tied the game 5-5 midway through the fourth quarter, but could never get over the hump for the lead. Justin Guterding led all scorers with four points, while Ryder Garnsey had three for Notre Dame. Danny Fowler made seven saves for Duke.

DANOWSKI SITS ATOP WINS LIST Head coach John Danowski etched his name at the top of the Division I men’s lacrosse wins list in 2017, beating Jacksonville for his 376th career victory. Dom Starsia held the previous record of 375. Danowski is third among active coaches across all three divisions and is on pace to become the first Division I head coach to reach 400 wins potentially in the 2018 season. The Blue Devils’ leader has 173 wins at Duke, 192 at Hofstra and 27 in his first stop at LIU Post.

CONLEY, SMITH A SPECIAL DUO Graduate student Peter Conley and junior Brad Smith make quite the dynamic duo as two thirds of Duke’s first midfield. Smith paces the midfield group with 21 goals, while Conley has 20. Only 11 midfielders in Division I lacrosse have scored at least 20 goals and Duke is the only program with two players on the list. Deemer Class holds the Duke single-season goals record for a midfielder with 50 in 2016 – a feat only five other midfielders in NCAA history have reached.

He leads the ACC and is in the top 15 nationally in both goals against average (8.28) and save percentage (.553). His 8.55 saves per game are second in the ACC. This is credit to Fowler’s play as well as the efforts of the defense in front of him as Duke’s opponents are getting just 29 shots per game.

GUTERDING IN THE RECORD BOOKS Justin Guterding recently joined an elite club as the third Blue Devil and 13th Division I player to amass 300 career points. He currently ranks third at Duke and 11th in NCAA history in career points and is four points shy of moving into 10th in the NCAA records book. His 183 goals are 13th in NCAA history. If Guterding matches his 51 goals total from 2017 - he needs 14 more - he will finish with 197, good for third in the current NCAA history book. Zack Greer is the lone player in Division I lacrosse to score 200 career goals. Guterding needs 17 more to reach that mark and 23 to tie Greer’s 206. He has 37 through 11 games and has four regular season games remaining.

GUTERDING’S ASSIST GAME THRIVING Guterding averaged 2.56 assists per game in 2017, more than a one assist per game improvement of his 1.4 in 2016. He continues to trend sightly upward in 2018, averaging 2.64 assists per game. His 46 total in 2017 ranked sixth in Duke single-season history. Only Jordan Wolf, Matt Danowski and Ned Crotty have more assists in a season than Guterding. Guterding has 121 career helpers to rank third on the career charts. Danowski and Crotty sit atop the list with 183 and 147, respectively.

70, 71, 72 AND COUNTING FOR GUTERDING With four points at Marquette in 2017 Justin Guterding became the first Blue Devil to record at least 70 points in each of his first three seasons, going for 70, 71 and 97 in his respective seasons. He also is the fastest Blue Devil to 100 career points and is tied for the fastest player to 200 points. He needs four points to reach 70 this season. Guterding registered 97 points in 2017 to become the fourth different Blue Devil in program history to score 90 points in a season. His total is tied with current assistant coach Matt Danowski for second on the Duke single-season list. Only Jordan Wolf has scored 100 points in a season for Duke and just 15 different Division I players have reached the century mark in NCAA history 17 times - Lyle Thompson of Albany did so three times. Guterding is one of four Blue Devils to rank in the top 10 in school history in career points (304), goals (183) and assists (121).

STEIN IMPROVING AND EMERGING AT THE X Rookie faceoff specialist Joe Stein is starting to make his name as Duke’s leading draw man. Since stepping up as the go-to guy against Richmond for an injured Brian Smyth, Stein has taken all but 12 of the faceoffs in the five games in which he played – he missed the Cleveland State contest due to illness – and sports a .613 success rate. He has won at least 50 percent of his restarts in four of the outings, coming up just short (6-of-14, .429) at Towson. Prior to taking the reins against the Spiders, Stein took only 18 faceoffs and won seven (.389). His .613 win percentage in the past five games would rank second in the league and 13th nationally. Currently, at .581 overall he leads all rookies nationally, is tied for second in the ACC and ranks 18th among Division I faceoff specialists.

GILES-HARRIS, VAN RAAPHORST TAKEAWAY ARTISTS The duo of sophomore JT Giles-Harris and junior Cade Van Raaphorst at close defense is a scary sight for opposing attackmen. They lead the Blue Devils in caused turnovers with 15 and 13, respectively. Duke is the lone ACC program to have two players ranked among the top 72 nationally in caused turnovers per game. Giles-Harris stands at 43rd (1.36) and Van Raaphorst at 66th (1.18). The Blue Devils are one of 17 teams in the country to have at least two players represented in the top 66 in the category and the lone top 25 program.

JOE ROBERTSON ROOKIE IMPACT Rookie attackman Joe Robertson is having a strong first season for the Blue Devils, tallying 24 goals and eight assists for 32 points in his 11 games. He was named to the USILA Team of the Week following his four-goal outing in the fourth quarter against Denver. Robertson, averaging 2.18 goals and 2.91 points per game, is ninth in goals per game and points per game amongst Division I rookie scorers.

ROBERTSON LACROSSE FAMILY Lacrosse is a family affair for Duke’s rookie Joe Robertson as he follows in the footsteps of his three older brothers to play Division I lacrosse. Matt, the oldest, played his final two seasons at Virginia. Ian was a Maryland Terrapin for three years and Phillip is a sophomore on the Princeton men’s lacrosse team.

ALL IN THE FAMILY FOR GILES-HARRIS Sophomore close defenseman John Thomas (JT) Giles-Harris isn’t the only one from his family making a name for himself as a Blue Devil. JT’s brother, Joe, is Duke football’s top defensive player. He garnered four All-America awards in 2017, including second-team honors by the Walter Camp Foundation.

VAN RAAPHORST’S ATHLETIC LINEAGE Junior close defenseman Cade Van Raaphorst traded the football for the lacrosse stick despite hailing from a family of elite college quarterbacks. Cade is the son of Jeff Van Raaphorst, quarterback at Arizona State leading the Sun Devils to the Pac-10 and Rose Bowl title in 1987. He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 2006. Jeff also played in the NFL for a few seasons. Uncle, Mike Van Raaphorst, was the backup quarterback to Carson Palmer at Southern California.

UP NEXT Duke closes its ACC schedule April 14 at Virginia. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m., at Klöckner Stadium on ACC Network Extra

2018 DUKE MEN’S LACROSSE GAME NOTES • 9

JOHN DANOWSKI2007-P • 392-192 (35 seasons) • 173-53 at Duke (11 seasons)

Cemented as one of the top coaches in college lacrosse, John Danowski has led the Duke men’s lacrosse team to unprecedented success and himself to the top over the Division I men's lacrosse wins list. Danowski was introduced as Duke’s eighth head men’s lacrosse coach on July 21, 2006 and quickly led the Blue Devils to some of the most successful lacrosse seasons in school history, to three NCAA Championships in five seasons.

In Danowski’s 11 years at the helm of the Blue Devils lacrosse program, he has compiled an impressive 173-53 record in leading Duke to seven ACC regular season titles and four ACC tournament titles, eight straight appearances in the national semifinals from 2007-14, four in the NCAA title match and ultimately to the 2010, 2013 and 2014 national titles. The 2014 NCAA crown put Danowski, a winner of 391 career games, among a small group of nine coaches to win three national titles and among eight to capture consecutive crowns. Meanwhile, Duke’s run of eight straight NCAA semifinals rank as the second most of any program since 2000 with Syracuse. Most recently, Danowski passed Dom Starsia as the winningest Division I lacrosse history, garnering his 376th win with a 13-6 victory over Jacksonville.

A winner of nearly 80 percent of his games at Duke, the individual awards Blue Devil players have garnered is equally impressive. In 11 seasons, Danowski mentored 64 All-America selections, 36 All-ACC choices, two Tewaaraton Trophy winners, a pair of USILA Attackman of the Year honorees, a USILA Defenseman of the Year, three USILA Midfielder of the Year award recipients and 21 USILA Scholar All-America picks.

While the success on the field is unsurpassed in Duke lacrosse history, the student-athletes excellence in the classroom also is unrivaled. The Blue Devils consistently lead the ACC in All-ACC Academic picks as well as players on the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
