Wolfeboro, settled in1768, was granted by

Governor John Wentworth and namedfor General Wolfe, a hero of the Battleof Quebec. Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire at over44,000 acres and 200 feet deep surrounded by mountain vistas andthe best that Mother Nature can provide. It encompasses the townsof Alton, Gilford, Laconia, Meredith, Center Harbor, Moultonbor-

Winnipesaukee and the surrounding lakes make up what isknown as the Lakes Region. The area was the inspiration and back-

drop for the movie “On Golden Pond” screenplay written by NewHampshire native Ernest Thompson staring Henry and Jane Fondaand Katharine Hepburn. "Smile of the Great Spirit" or "Beautiful Water in a HighPlace." At the outlet of the Winnipesaukee River, the Win-nipesaukee Indians, a subtribe of the Pennacook, lived andfished at a village called Acquadocton. Today, the site iscalled The Weirs,Lake Winnipesaukee Firsts.
