The Battle of New York saw the use of the world’s first combat submarine designed by David Bushnell. It was named “The Turtle” and had enough air to support human

life for 30 minutes. It used a tank of phosphorous to illuminate the gauges. Before the battle, it tried to attach a bomb to the copper sheathed HMS Eagle, but

failed and exploded. Neither vessel was hurt.
