17.2 Heating the Atmosphere

Why does the mercury inside a thermometer go up when heated?

Heat: energy transferred from one object to another related to total kinetic energy.

Temperature: a measure of the average kinetic energy (speed + mass) of the individual atoms or molecules in a substance

Eureka!

There are 3 mechanisms of energy transfer as heat:

All 3 of these mechanisms happen simultaneously in the atmosphere.

Convection currents can take place in gases, liquids and solids
