Earlier this year, as I started to get my head around the numerous events on the Radford Calendar, many of them relating to the performing arts and in particular music, I saidto Mr Joel Copeland, our Director of Co-Curricular Music, “What is the one event I simply cannot miss this year”? His response was as quick as it was emphatic – RadfordCelebrates Music. And how right he was.

Last Friday evening, alongside many other parents and friends of the College, I had the privilege of sitting thorough two magnificent Radford Celebrates Music concerts atLlewellyn Hall, showcasing the depth and talent of music in the College. We were entertained by orchestras, concert bands, rock bands, big bands, flute, guitar, percussionand string ensembles, and a range of choirs - large and small, young and older. And if all of those performances were not enough, both concerts were finished with acombined item, involving every student who had performed, in a massed choir singing, The Storm is Passing Over. It was a brilliant finale and it was simply wonderful to seestudents, of all ages, performing together on stage.

Much has been written about the benefits of learning a musical instrument. Research shows that a strong correlation exists between musical training for children and certainother mental abilities. In research conducted a couple of years ago, Laurel Trainor, director of the Institute for Music and the Mind at McMaster University, Ontario, andcolleagues, compared preschool children who had taken music lessons with those who did not. Those with some training showed larger brain responses on a number ofsound recognition tests given to the children. Her research indicated that musical training appears to modify the brain's auditory cortex. In a Live Science article, Trainorstated, “Even a year or two of music training leads to enhanced levels of memory and attention when measured by the same type of tests that monitor electrical and magneticimpulses in the brain. We therefore hypothesize that musical training (but not necessarily passive listening to music) affects attention and memory, which provides amechanism whereby musical training might lead to better learning across a number of domains".

Other research, conducted at Harvard University by researcher Gottfried Schlaug, has also found a correlation between early-childhood training in music and enhanced motorand auditory skills, as well as improvements in verbal ability and nonverbal reasoning. His team found that the correlation between music training and language developmentis even more striking for dyslexic children. "[The findings] suggest that a music intervention that strengthens the basic auditory music perception skills of children with dyslexiamay also remediate some of their language deficits." Schlaug said. (http://www.livescience.com/7950-music-improves-brain-function.html)

While it is very easy to find research that irrefutably details the cognitive benefits of learning an instrument, in my view there are many other reasons why we shouldencourage young people to learn a musical instrument. Most obviously is the fact that they gain an enormous amount of self-worth and achievement from being able tomaster an instrument and play a tune. And perhaps even more importantly, they have a huge amount of fun whilst performing. As I watched our students play and sing onFriday night, it was evident that here were students having fun, doing the things they enjoy!

Sad FarewellsAt the end of this term, we will be farewelling two senior members of staff, who, if we summed their years of service, would account for nearly forty years of working atRadford College.

Sadly, after 29 years of dedication to Radford, Mr Peter Dodd will be leaving us to relocate to Queensland, where his wife hasrecently taken a promotional position.

When reflecting on Peter’s contribution to Radford, it is difficult to summarise all of the positions he has held over those 29years. He has been a teacher, Head of Science, Senior School Coordinator, Director of Studies, Acting Head of Learning andTeaching, Head of High School and has run the Radford College Institute. In addition, he has been Year 7 Camp Convenor, Year9 Camp Convenor, Year 11 Retreat Organiser, Revue Coordinator, Coach of Basketball, Soccer, Rugby (including 1 premiershipteam) and Softball, MIC Softball and has organised a number of overseas tours. In short, there is very little that Peter has notdone whilst at Radford.

While Peter has expertly and diligently performed all of these duties, the real legacy he leaves Radford is the relationships hehas formed with students, staff and parents, and the impact he has had on literally hundreds, or perhaps thousands of studentswho have had the privilege of being educated by him. We wish him well as he departs for a more consistent climate – I am surehe knows he will always be very warmly welcomed back at Radford - and we thank him for all that he has done.

Ms Jocelyn Martin, our Business Manager, will leave Radford in mid-October to take up a promotional position as ChiefExecutive Corporate Services at the HIA.

Over the past nine years, Jocelyn has played a critical role in both the strategic and day-to-day life of the College. She hasengaged in strategic business planning to ensure that at all times the future educational initiatives and physical requirements ofthe College have been provided both for pupils and staff. On a day-to-day basis, she has also been responsible for theadministration of the College’s business affairs, financial management, College services, and facilities and general propertymanagement, as well as supporting all staff in those related areas.

In all of these areas, Jocelyn has performed her duties in an outstanding manner, often going well beyond what would beexpected. She has engaged well with all sections of the community and has built excellent relationships with the staff. On apersonal note, I found Jocelyn to be a great support in my first year as Principal. Although Jocelyn is leaving Radford in amonth’s time, she will still have a close link with the College as her sons James and Lewis continue their education here atRadford. We wish her well in her new adventure.

Acting Appointments in Term 4With Mr Dodd’s departure and Ms Claire Melloy taking Long Service Leave in Term 4, I am pleased to announce that for Term 4 Mr Nicholas Moss will be Acting Head ofMiddle School and Mr Bradley Greer will be Acting Head of High School. I have every confidence that these gentlemen will do an outstanding job.

ReflectionFather Richard Browning

Father Michael Lapsley is an Anglican priest who felt called by God to South Africa. Thick in the days of apartheid, Michael could not ignore the cries of the oppressed blackman and woman. He felt the best way he could maintain his integrity was to be a member of the ANC. His membership drew attention. In 1990 he received a letter. It was abomb. Opening the letter was the last occasion Michael used his hands. They were blown off.

Fighting for what is right comes at a real cost to real people. This fight is so important, but we need to be very clear about what is the right fight. The conflicts we want to putour name and bodies to are about people’s right to be self-determining, be in charge of their own resources, creating their own opportunities. We cannot easily get away withassuming God takes our side of the violence. The pathway out of successive cycles of pain and retribution is not more violence. Michael Lapsley himself has moved awayfrom partisan to priest. Yet his power as a priest is related to his work as a partisan. There is no movement to peace without grace, no restoration without openness, trust, generosity. This is a lesson we can learn from the Timorese. It is a lesson we can learn from the original “ground zero” survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki who have turnedtheir back on any right to retribution.

Picture Michael Lapsley at Holy Communion; the chalice and bread held up in prosthetic claws that clutch, rather than hold. See in his body the unmistakable, devastatingcost of solidarity with the downtrodden. At that altar, Michael would serve any who comes – communion is for all who seek peace with God – including those who made andsent him the letter bomb. As the sacraments are held up, Michael the priest, speaks: “The body and blood of Christ, given for you, come, take and eat.”

This is no glib religious saying for the irrelevant and weak. It is a pathway to walk. There is no future unless we can be honest with our past and be ministers of forgiveness.See Joseph as he reconciles with his enemies who are his brothers:

"Do not be afraid! Am I in the place of God? Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good … have no fear; I myself will provide for you and your littleones." Genesis 50.21

RAS - Healthy Body, Healthy Soul Week (15-19 September)Contact: Ms Vic D'Alton

Healthy Body, Healthy Soul is a RAS initiative designed to alert the Radford student community to the need to be in tune with maintaining a healthy existence. Life can beso busy that people often fail to notice how important it is to look after oneself – to take time out to appreciate a healthy body, and to have balance in one’s life. We allstruggle at times, sometimes due to a heavy workload, sometimes for other reasons, sometimes we can’t put our finger on it, but balance is also important for a healthy soul. We need to support each other during the difficult times that we have and know how to be a good friend, and also know when it is important to talk to an adult if you’re notsure how best to support your friend.

The Healthy Body, Healthy Soul initiative wants students to appreciate physical and mental health and not take either for granted. The initiative also acknowledges thatsome members of our community struggle from time to time in their physical health and their mental health. This initiative includes activities over one week - Week 9 (15-19September) designed to encourage students to explore aspects of Five Ways to Well-Being: Be Active, Connect, Learn, Take Notice and Give Back. As part of theawareness project, students will have opportunities to appreciate a healthy body through the wheelchair experience and participate in Zumba. For a healthy soul there will berandom acts of kindness, assembly presentations, a mufti day to wear your colour (for a donation of a book or buck to go to Lifeline), a BBQ, a band playing and an outdoorlounge to chill out and reflect on what it means to you to have a Healthy Body, Healthy Soul.

Letters from the Principal about the 1-to-1 ICT Program were e-mailed to parents of students in Years 3-11 on Friday. Some parents have reported not receiving these emails,so the letters are attached below, and also available from the home page of the College website. Information about the program, including a Q&A document, is also availableon the ICT page of the College website, and in the ICT Handbook which is on the ICT page of Radford Online.

Years 3-4 letter Year 5 letter Years 6-11 letter

From the Head of Junior SchoolPaul Southwell

Having spent three days in Sydney at a conference last week, it was lovely to be back on playground duty to start this week. An opportunity to mix and catch up with boys andgirls as they come together to share their weekend stories (you know how I always say we will believe 50% of what they say, if you believe 50%!). Monday starts set me up forthe week. I can get a sense of tiredness, talk about weekend sport that I have popped in on, music or parties, and check the blisters on hands from the monkey bars.

Year 6 ExhibitionThis week's morning duty was interrupted as our grounds men commenced setting up for the final stage of our Year Six Exhibition. As you read this on Wednesday, we will be in the final stages of presenting this culminating event for Year 6 students, families and staff. We deliberately locate Exhibition inthe middle section of our Junior School to represent all our students' journey toward this event. Over the past eight weeks our Year 6 students, staff, and, I know, our families, have been totally immersed in the world of Exhibition. I gathered a daily glimpse of this throughout the term as I visited classes. The focus, the intensity, the issues, the calm.Just in time/critical moment teaching was something to behold.

During this time they have:

been introduced to a broad range of concepts as provocations to take further perhapsdeveloped their own Central Ideas and Lines of Inquiry around self-selected Issuesworked with mentors from across our College in building their responseschallenged themselves, their teams and family in collaborating and self-managingworked at differing times in Music and Art studios where teachers have supported six or seven teams at a timeresearched, researched, researchedutilised Maths and English sessions in real termscreated team work-spaces and online connections/collaboration.

As Year 6 families see the final outcomes this week, I know they will be amazed at what has been achieved. Like me, they will look back at a time when their grown-up Year 6student commenced their journey with us and share in the wonder of that journey.

ConferenceMy small piece of feedback from the Conference last week. If possible, read a book by Dr Adam Fraser The Third Space. He talks about transitions in our day. Whilst I havebeen writing about growth mindsets of late, this book may just help us focus upon how we hold to a growth mindset, how we transition from work to home, from class toplayground, from meeting to meeting etc.

Congratulations - Kindergarten Learning JourneyAs we celebrate Exhibition, I also wish to congratulate our Kindy team on a fabulous Learning Journey on Monday. So much knowledge!

Warmest RegardsPaul Southwell

James with Gabi Hollows

Earlier in the year, Year 5 student James Anderson-Bowell saw astory on TV about drought-affected animals in NSW. He wasmotivated to raised money for the “Buy-a-Bale” campaign andended up donating over $1000 to support this charity.

In recognition of this fantastic effort, James received a FredHollows Award last Friday at a special ceremony thatacknowledged the work of primary school students from 30different schools around Canberra.

James was also selected to meet with Gabi Hollows after theevent and he was able to chat with her, tell her his story andshow her a few photos of his horse.

PYP IN ACTION TERM 2, WEEK 8, 2014

PYP Coordinator: Belinda Reitstatter

This section of our Junior School Bytes is designed to keep our school community informed about our Primary Years Programme curriculum in the Junior School.

Year 6 Exhibition - TONIGHT! the culmination of the Year 6 Exhibition will be held on Wednesday 17 September at 6pm in the RA Young Hall. All members of the Radford community are welcome to this evening.

I often hear education being referred to as a way to ‘prepare children for real life.’ Not only do I interpret this as limiting but I also feel it is quite ignorant as it overlooks onevery important truth, childhood is life. As I reflect upon my time working with children, I can confidently say that it is a natural childhood tendency to be ‘in the presentmoment.’ It is often we adults who quickly project into the future, purely as a way to manage and organise a busy life and as a way to set goals for our future. When onerelates this idea to children and learning, it is easy to see how an emphasis on the future or the product of learning can amplify anxiety and disengage them from the moremeaningful aspects of learning.

Providing a learning environment that allows children to think creatively, act upon and explore their own questions can result in mentally and socially stimulating experiencesthat are both memorable and meaningful.

Throughout this term, our Year 6 teachers have skillfully planned experiences where their students have identified, investigated and offered solutions to a real issue orproblem that exists within our world today. With a strong emphasis on the process of learning as well as social and organisational aspects of it, students have workedcollaboratively in groups to inquire into an issue of their choice. It should go without saying that this experience has not only created great challenges for our students, but ithas also resulted in a depth of understanding that, in many cases, is really quite remarkable.

Should you have the time and interest to see our Year 6 children exhibit their findings we welcome you to join us tonight in the RA Young Hall at 6pm. The evening will beginwith students introducing themselves and performing a small musical piece to provide an overview of the transdisciplinary theme through which they inquired. After thatpeople will be free to explore the inquiry boards which will be set up in various parts of the Junior School.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the teachers, mentors, parents and community members who have helped facilitate thiswonderful experience for our Year 6 students. I would also like to congratulate our Year 6 students for their admirable approach to the inquiries they haveindependently conducted.

Green Team CocurricularDean O'Brien and Robyn Evans

Each Wednesday in the warmer months, Green Team meets for an hour to go bushwalking, discusssustainability, recycling, maintain gardens, composting and planting vegetables. During Term 2 we entered acompetition called SEA*ACT Science Fair and the Green Team members came up with the idea to collectseeds from Gossan Hill.

The cool part of the seed data collection was to use different materials from home and attachthem to our feet and go bushwalking. We looked quite funny each week walking up GossanHill with funny looking feet! On Friday night, Radford had 9 children attend an award ceremonyheld at the CSIRO. We won 1st prize in the Biological Sciences section for our project.

The children were very proud of their achievements and they now have $80 prize money to spend atRadford! We would also like to congratulate Jack Keogh from Year 4 who also won an award for his projecton 'How Seagulls Eat?' Jack now has the opportunity to send his project into a National competition. Goodluck Jack!!!

A huge 'thank you' to Jo Keogh who did all the groundwork for this competition and will be a great contact in2015 for other students who may be interested in entering the competition. Jo walked with us each week anddid a lot of counting of seeds to help in the data collection. On behalf of the Green Team we would like tothank you Jo for all your hard work!

Green Team has had a well-earned rest during the cold Term 3 and will begin again in Term 4. Mrs Evansand Mr O'Brien are really excited about spending more time with Green Team making Radford a 'greener'place.
