Passage:
An ancient Greek myth or legend tells the story of Daedalus, a great engineer and
inventor. The Daedalus and Icarus, his son, were being kept captive by the king of
Crete on his island.
The king gave Daedalus a well equipped workshop in a high tower, but this was
not enough to make the inventor content to remain in Crete. He just wanted his
freedom to leave the island and return to his own country. Realizing this, the king
ordered that all the ships should be searched before leaving port to check that
Daedalus and Icarus were not aboard. But the two were determined to leave, and if
they could not escape by sea they would find another way!
Daedalus watched the birds and suddenly an idea came to him. That was it! He
would build Icarus and himself a set of wings each. He sent Icarus off to collect all
the feathers he could find and soon the workshop was full of thousands of them.
Next, Daedalus made a wooden frame shamed like the wing of a bird. He poured
melted wax on to the frame, and into the wax he pressed the feathers. Then, he let
the wax cool and become solid again. To his delight, when he attached the wings to
his shoulders, he would feel the wind trying to lift him into the air. Immediately he
set to work to make a second pair for Icarus. Daedalus was sure that he and his son
could jump from the tower and fly across the water.
When they were ready to leave Daedalus gave the boy some advice. ‘If you fly too
low, the spray from the waves will make your wings wet and heavy, but if you fly
too high, the heat from the Sun will melt the wax that holds the feathers together.
Stay near me and you will safe’.
With a feeling of great excitement they climbed on to the window ledge. Daedalus
smiled at his son, then jumped. At first the wings did not seem to be lifting him.
Desperately he flapped his wings and then, slowly at first, he was carried up into
the sky. He glanced over his shoulder to see Icarus close behind.
25/69
What a thrill young Icarus felt to be flying like a bird. With sheer delight, Icarus
soared higher and higher up towards the clouds. Daedalus suddenly realized that
his son was too excited to remember his father’s warning. Up, Up, soared the boy
through the clouds --- and then above them.
‘Icarus, my son! Come back, the Sun will melt the wax!’ pleaded Daedalus, but
Icaurs was now too far away to hear the cries of his father. Suddenly Icarus
remembered it was too late! He could see the feathers beginning to come away
from the wooden frame --- first a few, then more and more. He began to lose
height. Faster and faster he fell towards the sea, with the feathers scattering round
him as he crashed down past his desperate, helpless father. Daedalus pulled the
boy’s still body from the sea and flew back to land where, weeping bitterly he
buried him. Sometime later, Daedalus built a temple to appollo, the god of
sunlight. In it he hung his wings as an offering to the god. Never again would
Daedalus fly.

Misery
Worksheet-2

Passage:
In a land far away, there once lived a rich man in a fine mansion and a poor man
who dwelt in a hovel nearby. The rich man lived well, but his neighbor’s life was
hard and wretched, for Misery lived in his house. Misery sat in the chimney
corner. He made the poor man’s fire smoke and burn low so that his house was
never warm. Misery sat at the poor man’s table and breathed upon his food, so that
what little meat he had was tough and tasteless.
Then one spring morning, the wife looked out at the Earth newly waking and the
flowers coming into bloom. She thought, ‘Our life would not be so very bad if only
Misery did not live with us!’So she spoke kindly to her husband and asked him if
they could find some way to drive Misery out. Her husband was touched by her
words, and he sat and thought. Then he went into his woodshed and picked up a
wide plank of wood. He called to his wife and together they set out into the wild
wood. After they had walked some way, the man looked back and saw Misery
following them. They reached a deep stream and the husband put down the plank
for his wife to walk across. Quickly he followed her, pulling up the plank before
Misery could reach it. But when he glanced back again, he saw that Misery had
moved a huge tree trunk so that he could reach it. But when he glanced back again,
he saw that he could cross the stream, and was still following behind.
The poor man knew an old hollow tree deep in the wood. When he reached it, he
put down the plank, cut a branch from the tree and began to shape some wooden
wedges. Misery came closer to see what he was doing.
‘I can’t stand living with Misery any longer,’ the man said loudly to his wife. “I am
going to shut myself up in this hollow tree where he can never get at me again.
You must drive in the wedges, Wife, to hold the plank fast and keep him out.’
28/69
‘I will do it, Husband,’ said the wife, for she saw that her husband was setting up a
trap.
Misery could not bear to see the poor man escape him, so at the last moment he
sprang into the hollow tree, just as the man was climbing in. At once the man
jumped out again, and with his wife’s help put the plank in place and drove the
wedges home. When it was done, the poor man and his wife looked at one another
and laughed for the first time in many years.
With Misery gone, the couple walked home hand in hand, and it seemed that
already their luck was changing, for they found a purse with some gold coins lying
on the road. Soon the poor man’s house was a very different place. The fire burned
brightly, the food tasted good. The vegetables in the garden flourished and they
had enough to sell at the market. The hens laid more eggs and soon they made
enough money to buy a sheep. The wife sang as she swept the house clean. With
Misery gone, life was worth living at last. But the man was still afraid that Misery
might escape from the hollow tree and come back to plague them. So each week
he went to the tree to make sure that the wedges were still tight. And if any seemed
loose, he would hammer them again,
Now, the rich man had noticed how his poor neighbor prospered. ‘He has found
some treasure,’ he thought, ‘and he goes into the woods each week to take a little
or more gold from his store. ‘So the next time the poor man went into the woods,
the rich man followed him. Watching from the bushes, he saw the poor man
hammering away at the wedges.
‘Ah!’ thought the rich man. ‘So that is where he keeps his treasure!’ Although, he
was always greedy for more gold. He waited until the poor man had gone and
quickly knocked out the wedges to see what was hidden in the hollow tree. And at
once Misery leaped out! He was so pleased to be free that he followed the rich man
home, and from that day lived in his house instead.
For riches are no guard against Misery. It takes love and kindness, and sometimes
a little cunning, to keep Misery at bay.
