Dear friends, In a previous newsletter I looked forward to warm and pleasant walks during the spring and summer to compensate for the cold, wet and muddy winter but little did I know then that we would be walking in a heat wave! Most walks went ahead as planned but we felt it prudent to cancel some, especially where steep climbs were involved. We did our best to give advance warning and apologise for any disappointment and inconvenience. It is my great pleasure to welcome to the group: Glynis Emery, Colin Perins, Lee Kemp, Dudley Davies, Chris Wilkins, Timothy and Natalie Nicholls, Jane and Peter Coulson, Jane McLellan. We look forward to you ACTION BY YOU IS NEEDED The General Database Protection Regulation came into force on 25 th May and is intended to provide additional safeguards for the processing and storing of personal data. We rely upon Ramblers to supply us with members’ names and addresses so that we can post programmes and newsletters to you. However, locally, vice chairman Jack Yan maintains an encrypted file of email addresses to enable programmes and newsletters to be sent by email where preferred. Jack has asked if members for whom he holds email addresses will confirm by email that they are content with this arrangement or wish to amend or be removed from the listing. We take the utmost care with your contact details and will never use them for purposes other than for the business of the Group and Ramblers. joining us on our walks when you can expect a very warm welcome and an opportunity to make new friends. We take great pride in our reputation as a relaxed and friendly group where you will get to know each and every one of us by the end of your first walk. Should you need help or advice about joining your first walk, please give me a ring (020 8467 9419) or contact the walk leader whose name you will find in your programme. Sadly, I regret to announce that long standing member and erstwhile leader, Colin Bryan, died in June. He will be missed by all of us. We have also just received the sad news that Kate Evans, a member of Sevenoaks Ramblers died recently. Kate was known to many of us, often joined us on walks and led walks for us. Stuart

SNIPPETS
Pub News We understand that the Cock Inn at Henley Street, a favourite watering hole of North West Kent Ramblers, is no longer serving lunches.
Kent Ramblers Area Council After many years, Chair, Alison Hargreave and Treasurer, Ray Lawrence, will be standing down at the next Area AGM. New volunteers are being sought for these posts which will provide a wide insight into the work of Ramblers. Alison and Ray (from whom we receive funding for our group) will be at hand to ease the new incumbents into the job. Please telephone our chairman if you are interested in one of these important posts.
Area Council will be holding a Workshop on Volunteer Support and Recruitment in Lenham on 20th October with a team from central office to which all group volunteers are invited. If you wish to come along, responses should be sent by 5th October to [email protected]
Lost Ways The project to include, by the cut-‐off date of 2026, footpaths that are in use but not on the definitive map is underway. If you would like to help with this important project please telephone our chairman.
Public Rights of Way. Kent County Council has published a consultation draft of its Public Rights of Way Improvement Plan for Kent 2018-‐2028. They would welcome views by 20th September. Visit www.kent.gov.uk/rightsofwayimprovementplan for more details and to complete the online questionnaire. For hard copies of the plan email [email protected] or telephone 03000 421553 Research into Walking. The Salomons Centre for Applied Psychology at Canterbury Christ Church University is conducting research into why so few people over 65 walk regularly. Our Chairman, Stuart, is participating in this study as many of our members, are retired. The findings will be pertinent to us and other walking groups with a largely retired membership. Watch this space!

Picnic – This year’s picnic was held on 6 June at Cudham Shaws. Although the weather was very hot, it was well attended by 33 of our members who had a walk in the beautiful countryside before enjoying a picnic, followed by tea and cake. We were joined by many members who no longer walk and who wanted to catch up with old friends. Many thanks to everyone who provided a wonderful selection of homemade cakes. …and thanks to Carole for organising the event. Footpath Clearance We have completed seven paths this year with a team consisting, at various times, of Maureen Milton, Richard Wilkes, Dennis Dorran of Sevenoaks and myself (Paul Watson). We were presented with eleven jobs in June and still have four/five to complete, work being suspended during the recent hot spell. But if you would like to help, please contact Paul.
The group holiday. Twenty members took off to Northumberland in May for a fantastic week of sight seeing and, of course, good walking. Based at the HF Centre at Alnmouth, we enjoyed some great walking on the coast and in the hills nearby. On the free day, some visited the Farne Islands whilst a small group ambled round Alnwick Castle (see below). For many, the week finished with a gentle walk around Holy Island. Many thanks to Maureen Carroll for organising this great holiday. Next year….it’s Lulworth Cove. All set for a cream tea!!
A local history walk…..Thamesmead Ramble on 23rd September: Members of NWK walked through the Peabody Trust estate situated on the Royal Arsenal explosive manufacturing and testing site based on Erith marshes. The walk commenced near the remaining section of the main canal used for receiving deliveries, including explosives, from Waltham Abbey. In keeping up the tradition of fitting in a climb, the route went via the man-made highest point of Gallions Hill. The Thames path was used to bypass the contaminated and prohibited section of the site. Thamesmead was then re-entered to follow the smaller canals in order to gain entry to the Grade one listed Crossness Pumping engines, built in1865. Following lunch the group used the Thames path back into Thamesmead, visiting some of the remaining moated 1897 magazines and other constructions remaining, to regain the start point. Paul Watson P.S. There will be a talk on the Crossness Pumping Station at our AGM on Friday 9th November.
