Message from the Padre

In our Gospel this weekend, Jesus paints a picture of religious lead-

ers who used piety as a front for their hypocrisy. They love the spotlight

and proclaim charity, but what is missing in their lives is Humility. Yes,

Jesus is showing us that there needs to be a connection between the profes-

sions of faith we make each week and the kind of life we lead. We need to

be humble in our service and be models of good deeds in every respect. We

are also called to remember that our talents are gifts from God and any re-

ward or success we receive or achieve is God’s blessing and not because we

have attained it by our own merits.

My dear friends, of all the virtues that we are called to follow...HUMILITY is the one we will least

likely to master on our own, as Humility does not always come easy. It is by human nature that we often want

to feel the good old “pat on the back” when we have done something good. We have grown accustomed to the

idea that accomplishments should always be rewarded. There is nothing wrong with being rewarded but it is

the clamor and attitude of getting rewarded that creates such difficulty because we fail to realize, that what-

ever we have done, we have done nothing extraordinary in the eyes of God.

Yes, “true humility” comes when we recognize the greatness of our Lord in our lives. And so this

weekend, let us be thankful for all God’s blessing and in return, let us serve God in all humility... giving all

our effort for His sake ... for other’s sake ...and not just for our own sake.

Fr Joe

Thirty-First Sunday

In Ordinary Time Malachi 1: 14b - 2: 2b, 8-10

1 Thessalonians 2: 7b-9, 13

Matthew 23: 1-12

Our first reading and Gospel deliver a very clear message

about practicing what we preach. Imagine being a scribe

or Pharisee and hearing Jesus tell the people to ignore

what you do and only do what you preach! As we hear

these words, let us each examine our own lives. Do we

do what God asks of us, or do we only pay lip service to

God’s commands?
