PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Here we are the end of week 2, amazing how time flies!
We hope you have had a wonderful week. In the early days of the year, it is
important for us to know our community. Therefore, this report will focus on
introducing our Student Leaders for 2021. As the year unfolds it is anticipated that
we will see and hear more from them. Before we introduce the leadership team,
there is a bit of business to consider.
At the beginning of each year it is important to remind families of protocols and
processes that occur within the school system. Please read below to gain an
understanding of these important reminders:
Annual privacy – Our school collects, uses, discloses and stores student and
parent personal information for standard school functions or where permitted by
law, as stated in the Schools’ Privacy Policy
(https://www.education.vic.gov.au/Pages/schoolsprivacypolicy.aspx).
Please take time to remind yourself of the school’s privacy policy and collection
statement, found on our website https://wantirnasouthps.vic.edu.au/about-us
For more information about privacy, see: Schools’ Privacy Policy – Information
for parents (https://www.education.vic.gov.au/Pages/Schools-Privacy-Policy-
informaiton. This information is available in nine community languages.
Before handing over to the students I wish to advise that in the next couple of weeks
we will be circulating information seeking parent support to help our community
continue to grow and thrive. We will be seeking representatives for Parents
Association and for School Council. If you are interested in any of these roles or
would like to have a chat about what the role entails please come and see me. Come
along to our first PA meeting for 2021 in the staffroom at 6.15pm next Tuesday
March 9th.

WASPS Wellbeing News
It has been wonderful to see our students returning to school,
filled with enthusiasm and enjoying time reconnecting with
their peers and teachers.
We are proud to be partnering with The Resilience
Project again this year which will see students
participate in weekly Wellbeing lessons, as well as
continuing a daily focus on the four key pillars of the
program; Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and
Emotional Literacy.
Parent Webinar Please keep Tuesday the 23rd March free in your diaries, as The Resilience
Project Parent Webinar will be taking place. I will provide you with more details as I
receive them.
Emotional Literacy This involves our ability to label our emotions as we experience them.
Labelling them helps us to manage our emotions (soften negative emotions and find
positive emotions). People who are able to express their feelings in healthy ways are also
more likely to have resilience and coping skills.
At this time of the year, our children are often
experiencing the many different emotions that change
often brings. Through modelling and teaching, adults
play a significant role in helping children develop their
emotional literacy.
If you are interested in finding out more about how you
can support your children with identifying and managing
their emotions, the following article from Kidshelpline
has some great tips: https://kidshelpline.com.au/parents/issues/helping-kids-identify-and-express-feelings
Have a wonderful week!

All Things Musical at WASPS 2021!
Happy New School Year to everyone…
My name is Vicky Howse and I am the Band, Glee Club and Choir Coordinator
here at Wasps.
It is great to be able to recommence music ensembles for 2021 and the following
is some information about the different ensembles and instrumental lessons and
how to get your children involved.
I believe music is an important part of a child’s education offering many benefits
cognitively, emotionally and socially.
It has been scientifically proven that children who participate in music have
better personal academic outcomes, not to mention the coordination, enhanced
wellbeing and confidence, motor and social skills gained.
There are a number of ensembles which run weekly and have performance
opportunities throughout the year. The school ensembles are free of charge with
the Band and Glee Club requiring audition. Choir is open to any student in Grades
2-6.
CHOIR
Choir rehearse on a Friday in the Multi-Purpose Room and the ensemble is open
to children in Grades 2-6.
No audition is required for Choir and our first meeting will be on Friday 5th
February at recess in the MPR.
Choir is a great place to start to get involved in music and we regularly perform at
school and in the community at Festivals, Fetes, Open Night and at Arcare.
If your child loves to sing and is committed to a weekly rehearsal at recess on a
Friday then please encourage them to come along on Friday 5th for our first
meeting.
BAND
Band also rehearse on a Friday, during general class time and this ensemble is for
children who are already competent in Voice, Keyboard/Piano, Drums, Guitar and
Bass.
Participation in the band is dependent on an audition process which will take
place on Friday 5th February. Please see below for the audition schedule.
Lessons in the specific instrument being auditioned for are not essential and
anyone from Grades 2-6 can audition. If there is any doubt whether your child
Page 12
should audition, then please encourage them. The audition process is a
supportive, relaxed environment with a ‘have a go’ feel. It is amazing what talent
has been unveiled in previous auditions!
The children will however need to be able to perform a short song or part of a
song in front of the other children and Ms. Howse.
GLEE CLUB
Glee Club have their rehearsal on a Friday during general class time and this
ensemble is for children who are competent singers and is by audition only. This
group is more advanced focusing on pitch, harmony and rhythm, along with
teamwork and performance skills.
Please see below for the audition schedule.
AUDITION SCHEDULE FOR BAND AND GLEE CLUB (Grades 2-6 only)
FRIDAY 5TH FEBRUARY
9:10am GUITAR auditions for Band.
Please bring your instrument and a short piece to play
9:45am VOICE auditions for Band and Glee Club.
Please prepare a short song or part of a song. It is preferable to sing a cappella
(alone) or to a backing track. Singing along to a recorded song is not the best way
to showcase the voice. A simple song such as a nursery rhyme is also adequate.
11:30am CHOIR meeting in the Multi-purpose room
12:00pm KEYBOARD auditions for Band.
Please prepare a short piece to play. A keyboard will be provided.
12:45pm DRUMS
Please prepare a short excerpt of a song or simply showcase what you know.
AUDITION TIMES WILL ALSO BE DISPLAYED ON THE MPR DOOR
I look forward to meeting all the children who are interested in taking part in
Choir or auditioning for Band and Glee Club next Friday.
Vicky Howse - Band and Choir Coordinator
