Well it looks like the speculation on whether Cr Anna is going to run for Council again is finally over, last week the long time Councillor confirmed that this will be her last term. This week our News Editor will spend some time with Cr Anna talking to her about what she sees as the vital projects that need to be continued on in the area, as well as what skills and expertise she believes her replacement will need to successfully fulfil the expectations of our communities. With just over a year to go until the next Council elections, it shouldn’t be long before we begin to see who will toss their hat into the ring to run for the job.I expect that the number of letters to the editor about Council issues will start to increase – with readers seizing the opportunity to let future candidates know what is important to them.

This leads me to another comment of speculation that I would like to clear up – someone recently passed on to me that there was a belief by some readers that GCNews did not print letters that raised issues against council.I have to say this made me laugh as clearly none of the people who have speculated this have ever actually written us a letter that wasn’t printed. While most readers are aware that we don’t print letters that personally attack individuals and could leave us open to legal action – we do however encourage readers to send in letters that explore issues that affect our community and we are more than happy to print these!

Your chance to be part of the Class of 2011Local photographer, Kathy Hill of Whisper Images in Peachester, is looking for Year 12 students to take part in The Sunshine Coast’s Class of 2011 Year Book, and if you book your photo shoot in February or March you will be helping someone who has been disadvantaged by the recent flood disasters.Kathy has joined an expanding list of some of Australia’s top portrait photographers in a unique project to document the class of 2011 whilst raising funds to create life changing opportunities for disadvantaged young people. The project is now in its third year, with previous years editions featuring students from Beerwah High as well as all over the Sunshine Coast.Kathy will be busy photographing on the streets, parks, beaches and in the studio, creating images that reflect the personalities and lifestyle of this year’s Year 12 students.“It’s such an amazing time in their lives, a time of big changes and challenges and the kids have great fun having their own magazine style photo shoot specifically tailored for them,” said Kathy.Students will have a fashion style photography session and will be encouraged to include elements that reflect their interests such as musical instruments, sports, skate or surfboards. The studio’s usual session fee has been waived and replaced with a special ‘Breaking Out’ participation fee of just $25.00 to cover the photography session, and guarantees the student

will be included in the yearbook. The proceeds of the participation fee will be donated to the Breaking Out Foundation, established by portrait photographers in Australia to raise funds to create life-changing opportunities for disadvantaged teenagers. The aim of the foundation is to identify young people aged 14 - 19 who are passionate / gifted / talented in the areas of the arts / science / sport (or other areas) that have difficulty realising their potential and dreams.Kathy said to date, $9,200.00 has been raised, and this money, plus participation fees for the next two months will be used to help a student or teenager who has been affected by the recent flood disasters.Photography for the book has commenced and the project will culminate with the publishing of ‘The Sunshine Coast’s Class of 2011’.“It will be the ultimate momento from the students’ final year in high school. The coast’s Class of 2011 Year Book will be something to be treasured for many years,” Kathy said.To become involved, call Kathy at Whisper Images on 5494 9555 or 0409 049 074.

Accounting&Tax Our OP1 students for 2010Is it a trend or a natural phenomenon, or just one of the many hidden talents of our Glasshouse Country population? Whether or not our graduating students are out to prove anything or not, they are certainly setting the bar high, with three students from our local area who graduated last year receiving a prized OP1.Dylan Stevenson from Glasshouse Country Christian College, and Emily Madden and Andrew Perryman from Beerwah State High School, each have reason to be very proud of their achievement with their outstanding results.Dylan, 17, from Peachester, is currently in the middle of his first six weeks training for the Royal Australian Air Force at Canberra so his father, Allen Stevenson, spoke to us.Allen said the support from Glasshouse Country Christian College played a massive role to help Dylan achieve his OP1.“And also his dedication towards it, he was quite disciplined in his studies. He remained focussed for the whole time,” he said.Dylan’s OP1 allowed him to be accepted for an Aerospace Engineer degree with Honours and as a pilot. It also meant he achieved the Chief of Air Force Scholarship from the Australian Air Force Academy. Over the last five years Dylan was a member of the Australian Air Force Cadets, and he achieved the senior rank of Cadet Under Officer, so joining the Air Force has long been a goal. His aim is to fly Heavy Lift C17’s.

“He achieved the two things he wanted which was the degree and the pilot position,” said Allen. “He’s very happy. It is his passion.”Emily Madden, 17, from Beerwah, said three things helped her achieve her OP1.“Lots of hard work, late nights, and coffee.”She also had a bit of an excruciating wait to find out her result.“I wasn’t able to get it online, so I had to wait for it in the mail, and I was really eager to get it so I went down to the post office in the morning.

When I saw it was an OP1 I was shocked. I was hoping for top 3, but I did want a 1, I just didn’t expect it.”Achieving an OP1 also meant Emily received a scholarship, the Sir Samuel Griffith scholarship for Griffith University, worth about $20,000. She also gained membership to Griffith Honours College.Emily will be studying for a Bachelor of Music majoring in composition at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.

“The scholarship means I’ll be able to pay for off-campus living expenses a lot easier,” she said. She plays the piano, guitar and does vocals and said her goal for the future is to be a musician.“Anything music related really,” she said.Mooloolah’s Andrew Perryman, 18, said as well as a lot of study and not much sleep, he had a theory about achieving his impressive result.“It’s very weird but I’ve got this theory that the busier you tend to be in Year 12, the more work you put into everything. I think that if I hadn’t been doing all the extracurricular activities I ended up doing then I probably wouldn’t have put as much effort into my schooling.”Andrew found out his results on-line while he was in New Zealand.“When I saw the OP1 I felt relief. Having an OP1 meant to me that I got my Scholarship, a Vice Chancellor Scholarship to the University of Queensland. It’s awarded automatically if you achieve a certain OP, which is the top band of OP1’s. It’s the highest scholarship UQ offers and it’s worth $60,000 over five years.”At university, Andrew will be studying for a Bachelor of Science majoring in Maths and Physics. He hasn’t any long term goals as yet.“I just want to get through this first year of Uni and get good enough marks to be asked to tutor some Maths courses in second year.”

Recreational fishing boosted with fish release at Ewen Maddock DamA vision to make Ewen Maddock Dam a top spot for recreational anglers to catch native sport fish is a step closer following the release of 26,000 fingerlings last weekend. On Saturday, Ewen Maddock Fish Management Incorporated (EMFMI) released a total of 26,000 fingerlings of Australian Bass, Golden Perch, Silver Perch and Mary River Cod into Ewen Maddock Dam. This was one of the main aims of EMFMI when it formed just six months ago, so to see the fingerlings being released already is a major achievement for the group.Steve Evans, EMFMI Secretary, said grants from the Queensland State Government, the Sunshine Coast Council and a lot of hard work by EMFMI President Dave Brace, made it possible.“Dave has been the main driving force in putting it all together. He’s done an exceptional job wading through a lot of the paperwork, applications and bureaucracy to make it all happen. Combined with that, there’s been a very proactive and widespread fundraising campaign by the group’s members - raffles, donations, sausage sizzles and more - to raise a fair quantity of money,” Steve said.“We recognised that the dam was a great body of water and had great sport fishing potential, but for reasons that are quite varied, it had been previously stocked up until 12 years ago.“But it hasn’t been stocked since and so the fish stocks in the dam have degraded over time. There’s still some fish in there from previous stockings but they’re few and far between. So we’re trying to build the dam back up to its potential as a sports fishing destination,

not just for the club, but all the people on the Sunshine Coast.”EMFMI hopes to release similar quantities every year from now on.Steve said the bulk of the fingerlings that went in were bass, and its expected they will be of a minimum size limit to be able to be caught and kept as a table fish in about three years time. The fish can be caught and kept provided they comply with Queensland fisheries regulations and minimum size and bag limits.Size limits for the various species are accessible through Qld Fisheries webpages or tackle and bait shops can provide charts.Ewen Maddock Fish Management Incorporated is always looking for members so visit www.ewenmaddock.com.au for more information. The project has been assisted by council and the state government through their recreational fishing enhancement program, along with SEQ Water for assistance in allowing recreational fishing at Ewen Maddock Dam.

Local flood of generosity continues, unabatedThe floodwaters have long since receded, but the financial and emotional toll is still being counted in the wake of Queensland’s worst ever flooding event. This week, we share with readers another heartfelt story of how locals in our community have been reaching out to help those whose lives have been left devastated in the aftermath of the floods. It amounted to a case of six degrees of separation for Beerwah local Fran Staley, who, despite not personally knowing any of the victims of the recent flooding at Chinchilla, had enough connections with the community to know just how tough many of the residents were doing in the aftermath. After mentioning it to a small group of family and friends, Fran managed to fill an 18 metre cubic truck with goods and furniture, as well as acquiring a new eight berth caravan, on loan, rent free, for up to 12 months.Earlier this month, Fran and her family made the trip out to Chinchilla to deliver the goods, and was overwhelmed by the response she received. After being put in touch with a representative from Spiritus in Chinchilla, the truckload of donated goods was shared amongst five families, four from Chinchilla and one from Dalby.“When we made the trip to Chinchilla to deliver everything, we met all the families at the RSL for dinner and it was just great,” Fran said. One of the families, Mick and Alysa Hasted, with six-month-old twins Cody and Laithe, presented Fran with a beautiful collage of photos. The following day, Fran arranged to visit the families at their homes, where she was able to experience first hand the devastation and loss they had suffered. She said it was a wonderful and humbling experience to meet all those who directly benefited from the love and charity of Glasshouse Country locals.“I would like to pass on a sincere thanks to all those who helped out in some way, as well as my family and friends, who together helped make my ‘Chinchilla mission’ a huge success,” Fran said.S&G Furniture’s Steve Garney said he was happy to help out when approached by Fran.“I felt our donation (of a truck to transport the furniture, along with staff and petrol) was a more direct and quick way to respond, and help out,” Steve said.

Those who donated include Steve Garney, along with Col, Brad and Matt from S&G Furniture; Retreat Caravans, Melbourne; family friend Phil, for donating time to tow the caravan to Dalby; generous cash donation from B and L Tan from Mooloolah; generous food donations from Kevin and Donna, Jim and Helen, Eddy and Fran, and Tim and Judy from Pacific Place, Beerwah; Bethany and Chris Casey of Beerwah; Donna O’Connor of Beerwah; Alex Veness of Glass House; Lorna O’Donnel of Cooroy; Cora and Dave Hawthorne from Dave’s Flex and Fitness in Landsborough; C and G Staley of Landsborough; J and G Van der Auwera of Beerwah; Julie Gould of U Bute Driver Training Beerwah; Brian Hasset and Les Hughes of Elders Mooloolaba; Matt from Lifetime Timbers, Warana; Cameron from Lincoln Sentry, Warana, and Michelle Thomas, from Glass House.

Fran was touched to receive a framed collage of photos from one of the families who received some of the donated goods, Mick and Alysa Hasted, and their twin boys Cody and Laithe

Every student participated enthusiastically on a hot and humid day at the pool. The carnival ran smoothly due to the great efforts of our new PE teacher, Mr Cowling.

Students in Years 5, 6 and 7 at Beerwah State Primary School are engaged and thriving in a focused reading program. Three times per week, students work in a small group with others who have similar reading strengths. They work with a specialised team of teachers who lead them through a variety of texts focusing on vocabulary development, comprehension skills and text knowledge. The students are learning to understand and articulate the different demands of texts and the roles they undertake when working with those texts. Our shared goal at Beerwah State School is that we will grow confident, competent and active readers. The Kandoo value ‘Be an Active Learner’ is at the heart of these focus programs.

Funk and hip hop coming to Peachester!Ausfunk is a dance school with a difference – no pressure and lots of fun!Offering classes in Funk and Hip Hop style dance, the company has been running for over 10 years and operates three studios, and is about to be trialled in Peachester.“Some kids just want to learn how to do the latest moves in a safe, nurturing environment,” said Ausfunk CEO Hayley Green. Peachester mum Andrea Hoiser was sick of travelling outside her local area so contacted Hayley, looking for a dance teacher to hold a workshop in her area for her three-year-old daughter and friends. The workshop will be broken up into age groups catering from three years through to adults, and don’t forget the boys! The sessions will include a warm up based on the Ausfunk Hip Hop and Funk syllabus, a small routine to show off at home and information regarding a possible permanent booking at the hall.Hayley said she is excited about bring Ausfunk to the local area.“I get a wonderful feeling about bringing this style of dance to this community, this style comes naturally to kids of this generation and to teach it in a fun, loving environment makes it a great experience for them."Come along to the first workshop on Saturday, March 12 at the Peachester Hall. For more information check out the Ausfunk website at www.ausfunk.com.au or contact Hayley 0402 115 974.

Karen Siggs pins the leadership badge on her daughter, Emily while Principal Mike Curtis looks on

Parents participate in leadership servicesGlasshouse Country Christian College held two special services last week to induct the leaders of middle school and senior school. The events were particularly meaningful to the many parents who participated in both services.Parents were asked to pin the leadership badges onto their child’s uniform. It was a solemn moment where the focussed looks on proud mums and dads were more about trying not to cry rather than closing the fiddly clasp on the badge. One mother, Karen Siggs (mother of Emily), said it was lovely to be part of the ceremony.“I ended up pinning the badge on upside down but it was still a special moment,” she said. There was an atmosphere of celebration combined with the hopes, dreams and opportunities the future held for these special leaders.Teacher Anita Newell spoke on the heart of leadership at the middle school service and Principal Mike Curtis spoke on the keys to good leadership at the senior school service. After the ceremonies, parents and leaders were treated to a delicious morning tea by the hospitality students.

Landsborough Shopping Village’s bold transformationWhen it was decided the Landsborough Shopping Village needed a bit of a spruce up, there was little argument when committee members suggested calling in the big guns.Enter Chris Brazel, one of Australia’s leading numerologists and colour consultants.Chris, now based in Sydney, had previously done some work for Smartlearn’s Diane Ford. Diane was so impressed with the result, she immediately recommended her to fellow committee members. And according to all, the bright and bold result has had a positive impact.“The committee thought it was great to use such bold colours, and we’ve had lots of positive response from the community, too,” Diane said.“It’s a community shopping centre, so it’s important that it does have a positive impact,” she said.Chris said she chose the colours based on what energy the committee was hoping to achieve with the makeover.“People call me in when they need help to realise what energy they are hoping to attract while taking away the pain of where they are now,” Chris said.In the case of the Landsborough Shopping Village, Chris said the colours she chose, purple-blue, orange, green and cream, would together help create the sense of growth and change and improve the flow of communication and energy, while still being inviting and maintaining a sense of structure.

Glasshouse Country ToastmastersListen with your heartContributed by Martine GoedhartEmphatic listening involves much more than registering, reflecting, or even understanding the words that are said. Communication experts estimate that 10 percent of our communication is represented by the words we say, 30 per cent is represented by our sounds and 60 per cent by our body language. In emphatic listening, you listen with your ears, your eyes and with your heart.Listening is a fascinating process. I often find myself thinking about listening and how much energy it consumes. As Toastmasters we enjoy having someone who listens to us, who simply attends to us while suspending judgment and activities. It is the most amazing experience to feel heard and understood. The toastmasters program teaches us to become careful listeners. Listening is a fading skill. And yet, in Toastmasters we reference ‘better listening, thinking and speaking skills’.I love that listening comes before thinking and speaking. We need to be attentive listeners in order to become great communicators. When you are interested in becoming a better communicator and at the same time experience great camaraderie, come and join us for one of our meetings. We meet every second and fourth Thursday of the month in the hall of Church on the Rise, Peachester Road, Beerwah, from 9.15am - 11.30am. Give Kerry or Martine a call on 5493 0650 or 5496 9855. We love to hear from you and you won’t be disappointed.

Can we understand who God is?The Bible in Isaiah 45.5 tells us of one God –“There is no God besides me” and yet the bible also refers to three distinct persons as ‘God’. God the father in Galatians 1.1, Jesus Christ His Son, John 14.10 and the Holy Spirit in Acts 5.3-4.Christians describe this relationship as the Trinity, a word meaning three in one. Some of you may have learnt this at Sunday school or in religious education in the words ‘God the father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit’.Even though there are too many verses to fit in this column that describe this in the bible, many people find this a difficult concept to grasp. That’s not surprising because if God was too simple to understand He would hardly be God! Even Jesus own followers at first did not always understand and they had the best of teachers!I find that there are many things in God’s own creation that give us pointers to understanding Him. When my wife teaches this in RE she takes a kettle in, some ice cubes and a glass of water. When the students see the steam, ice

and liquid they can easily identify them as water in three different forms. The students can also easily share that each form has specific qualities needed for what it is required to do - after all showering in ice wouldn’t be much fun, neither would be attempting to drink steam. This simple analogy can help us understand that God the Father revealed himself in the form of His Son, Jesus, who came to earth to pay the price for our sin by being crucified. When he rose again he proved he has power over death and has the power to offer forgiveness to all who would believe in Him. When we believe that Jesus is our Saviour, His Holy Spirit lives in us confirming and helping us in our faith and walk with Jesus.I want to leave you with this biblical blessing: “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”2 Corinthians 13.14

2011 Youth of the Year Contributed by Una RobinsonBeerwah Lions Club was proud to again run the 2011 club level Youth of the Year competition on February 9 where a large crowd of members of the Beerwah Lions family, Beerwah High students and teachers, parents and family and visitors gathered to witness the final judging of the annual Lions National Bank sponsored Youth of the Year.Lions are very much indebted to the Glasshouse Rotary judges George McKenzie and Kay and Peter Farrell who as usual had a pretty tough time in their deliberations.Impromptu speech topics were:1. In New South Wales it is being discussed about the use of mobile phones banned in cars. What is your opinion of this?2. Do you think the Government had gone far enough in trying to reduce the number of young people from drinking and smoking?Prepared speeches were titled something like this:Blake McCubben – Leadership is any action that’s taken that makes the world a better place. Blake talked about his upcoming trip to Africa to work with children and going without his usual activities to save for this adventure.

Asha Josland – ‘The Family’. The varying compositions of a current family.Lauren Lingard – Being an entrant in Youth of the year was being presented with an opportunity for growth. Lauren addressed her experiences at age nine at an Indian boarding school at the foot of the Himalayas.Tyler Bosch – ‘Food for Thought’Discussed the first 50 years of the last century of wars, disasters etc vs. the last 12 months of disaster and lives lost. Two winners are announced, the Public Speaking section and the other, the overall winner of Youth of The year. This year congratulations go to Tyler Bosch, who won both competitions and will progress to the Lions Regional level of competition being held in Caloundra shortly.

What's in the Spotlight

Beware of phone scamI would just like to let others know of a phone call I received recently. They say they’re calling from Microsoft and that your ISP has asked them to call you because you’re computer is ‘infested’ with viruses and Trojans. I hung up after they directed me to the ‘C:\Windows\inf’ folder in order to convince me that all the files therein were evidence of infection. This folder is just full of plain text files that give information for most of the software and hardware on your PC.The less tech savy amongst us are then persuaded to give remote access to their pc’s (and all data therein) by the caller - and then hit up for a ‘Prevention fee’ as explained in this link http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jul/18/phone-scam-india-call-centre

Flooding response prompts questionsI was one of the unfortunate few who suffered flood damage in the local area earlier this year. Despite being grateful that the damage wasn’t worse, the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth, and I felt the need to share it with others. After the garage and granny flat on my property in Glass House became inundated, I called the SES hotline and left a message, and was told they would respond within 24 hours. When I still hadn’t received a response five days later, I rang back, and was eventually put in touch with a government employee, who explained the strain our local SES volunteers were under throughout the crisis.I was gobsmacked to learn that the SES is staffed entirely by volunteers, who, in order to offer their services, have to take time off work or have holidays. Why can’t our taxpayer dollars be better spent on funding these tireless workers, who are often not even equipped with the resources they need to do their job? After that little set back, I tried to ring Council to ask for some relief in terms of dumping all the rubbish from the clean up around my property. They (customer service) took my details, but I never heard anything back, which then prompted me to contact my local councillor, Anna Grosskreutz. Her office was most helpful, and I was eventually put on to someone from the waste area, who made an offer to allow me to dump two or three

utility loads of flood damaged goods at the tip for free. This was not without its own drama, of course, as when I went to dump the rubbish, even though I had a copy of the documentation, the employee put me through what felt like the Spanish inquisition.Later, I had the misfortunate of dealing with Unitywater, whom it was suggested I contact in relation to seeking some relief to assist with my clean up (much like was offered to residents in the South East). After inquiring was relief was available, I was told a decision had not yet been made, and could take up to a month. So a couple of weeks later, I rang again, and was told that no relief, other than interest free payment terms for my next water bill, was available.I am extremely grateful to have been spared the full impact of the state’s flooding, but I am certainly dumbfounded by the buck passing and lack of assistance offered by government agencies in times of need.

Desperately seeking BrendaAbout 20 years ago, while stationed on a US Navy ship, I visited Townsville and Brisbane after supporting operations in the Persian Gulf. While in Townsville I was introduced to a very nice lady named Brenda from Beerwah who was on holiday and was able to spend a few days with her while on liberty. Our next port call was in Brisbane and Brenda met me when we pulled into port and we spent a wonderful week touring the area and meeting family. As circumstances would have it, we lost touch, but I constantly look back on the great experience and would like to find a way to get back in touch. Over the years, I have lost any letters and contact information and do not even know her last name. Basically all I remember is that her house was a short block or two from the Beerwah train station and she had two very fun children (one daughter and one son) that would be in their mid to late 20s. If you are the person in question or can pass my request on to her, I can be contacted on [email protected].

Treadmill safety for childrenWith more and more local residents purchasing treadmills for use at home, the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission urged owners to take extra care to ensure infants and children are not injured by the equipment. The ACCC advises that between 1995 and 2010, some 100 children who suffered injuries from treadmills were treated at the Royal Brisbane Children’s Hospital. Here are some simple safety tips to reduce injuries:•Put the treadmill in a separate room or erect safety barriers to prevent children getting too close;•Purchase a treadmill with safety cover to prevent children getting caught in moving parts;•Purchase a treadmill model that has an emergency stop switch;•Unplug the treadmill when it is not in use.The ACCC has a safety alert brochure about treadmills that is available at http://www.productsafety.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/972973Conondale visitI was joined by State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell to tour the Conondale area recently to have a first hand look at the ongoing after effects of the flooding, including damage to bridges and roads, erosion and landslips. This is major damage and I have written to Premier Anna Bligh to highlight the needs. Internet safetyAlmost nine million Australians use social networking sites, based on figures from June 2010, and around one in four users was under the age of 18.With this in mind, users are reminded of the need for staying safe online. The International Safer Internet Day was held on February 8. Its theme this year is ‘It’s more than a game, it’s your life’. The internet is becoming increasingly part of all our lives, including young children, so the need to be careful and responsible with internet use is vital. The Australian Communications and Media Authority has introduced a number of tools and tips and is holding cybersafety educational activities in schools throughout Australia. For information and resources for Safer Internet Day 2011 visit www.cybersmart.gov.au/SID%202011.aspx

Mooloolah Connection Road – missing linkCouncil has had some major difficulties with getting the path design approved by Main Roads for the remaining missing section on Mooloolah Connection Road, just west of the Old Gympie Road intersection. The trouble has been the required safe clear zone width, from the road, considering it’s an 80km/hr road. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) have chopped and changed their requirements for kerb and channel, then guard rail. Unfortunately the guard rail option doesn’t work well with the breaks required for driveway accesses. There is also a power pole to be relocated which we are currently organising through Energex and there are always long lead times with this type of work.Council’s design team have been working the redesign and have come up with a combination of guard rail and kerbed sections to protect path users from errant vehicles, given DTMR’s clear zone requirement. This will also require some land to be acquired which has to be done through DTMR as it’s a State road corridor.Unfortunately it will still take some time to get the DTMR design approval in place, access to land and power relocations. I think realistically we may be looking at three to four months before construction will begin, depending on DTMR and Energex.Beerwah Library Meeting Room SinkThe long awaited sink for our Library Community Meeting Room should be in place in a month’s time. Sometimes seemingly simple jobs are the more complicated and this was one of those.Once installed, it will assist both Library Staff and Community Associations who regularly use this comfy space.Development applicationMotel and Shops GlenviewAn application has been lodged with the council for a Material Change of Use for a Motel, Medical (alternative therapies) and shop (Hairdresser) at 17 Glenview Road, Glenview. The current use of the land is restaurant and residence. The application number is MCU10/2130.

Community groups – do you need help paying your water bill?Not-for-profit community groups who need help paying their latest water bill can apply now for a grant through the Sunshine Coast Council’s Water and Sewerage Funding Program. Those eligible have until Tuesday, March 15 to lodge their applications. Organisations can receive up to a maximum of $5,000 per property for this round. Call 5441 8616 or email [email protected] for information and assistance with the funding application.Visit www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/grants to make an online application and to view guidelines and eligibility criteria.Bridge Creek Road, MalenyPlease be advised that Council will commence road widening and sealing works on Bridge Creek Road, Maleny. Work is scheduled to commence this week from Monday, February 14, between 6.00am - 6.00pm (weather permitting), and it's anticipated work will be completed within one week. During construction partial road closures will be experienced and property access may be affected for short durations. Traffic management measures will be in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists. If you have any queries, please contact Council’s Customer Service on 1300 007 272.Funding for local artists and groupsLocal artists and cultural groups have until March 15 to apply for a grant under the next round of Sunshine Coast Council’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Program. The program provides financial support to local residents and the community for a wide variety of arts and cultural projects. It fosters and encourages creativity by providing financial support needed to improve their skills or get their creative project up and running.Grants are available in six categories, from skills development, building cultural capacity or interest-free arts loans, and can cover up to 70 per cent of a project’s total costs. I encourage creative types to take advantage of this opportunity. Call 5441 8385 or email [email protected] for information and assistance with the funding application.

Clues about how we ageLatest findings from The Heart Research Institute (HRI) provide clues about how our cells die as we age and how this might contribute to age-related conditions like heart disease.HRI Researcher, Dr Rachael Dunlop, said many diseases associated with ageing including heart disease, have a common link – a build-up of damaged proteins.“Proteins are the building blocks of our muscles, cells and tissues, and perform critical roles in keeping our bodies functioning.“Normally our bodies recognise when proteins are damaged beyond repair and send them for recycling or disposal. But in some age-related conditions such as heart disease, this does not happen effectively.”Dr Dunlop examined how our body processes

these damaged proteins, and found they are not effectively removed. She said it had been known for many years that these proteins build-up, but what wasn't understood was the significant way they contribute to the advancement of the disease, even the ageing process itself. The research revealed that cells respond to the build-up of proteins with a process known as ‘apoptosis’ (cell suicide) as a way of protecting nearby tissue from damage.“Damaged proteins like these occur in a wide variety of age-related conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and heart disease, therefore our findings might provide clues for potential therapies for a wide range of age-related conditions,” she said.

Changing homes in June, the scratches from the prickly rose bushes in the new garden had them mentally assigned to the wheelie bin once we settled in. Fortunately, before this happened they brought forth amazingly beautiful blooms which have proved a source of immense pleasure and a challenge to photograph.Experimenting with the macro setting on my Panasonic Lumix DM-LZ1 Camera proved unsuccessful as the slight breeze made for a blurred image. We had been told at our Beerwah Grafx photography and digital imaging class at the Library each Thursday, that to get the effect of raindrops on flowers, just take spray bottle of

water with you. I chose to use real raindrops at 9.00am one morning, but to get out of the breeze, took the flower inside and set it up in a small vase on the floor directly under a downlight. Using the ‘Simple’ mode, the flash and taking care not to cast my shadow on the bloom I achieved the picture I wanted.

Plans are now underway to expand our current accommodation facilities due to this overwhelming demand,” he said.“Those shaving or colouring their hair this year will also help us continue investing more than $1 million in medical research each year seeking higher survival rates and hopefully a cure.”The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation and does not receive ongoing government funding. Will you be brave and shave? Flood levy debate stirs emotionsAs the federal government considers introducing a flood levy, we took to the streets of Beerwah to find out what locals thought of the levy, which would apply to all taxpayers that have a taxable income of more than $50,000 in the 2011 - 2012 financial year. Those taxpayers with a taxable income of less than $50,000 or who are in receipt of an Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment for a flood event that occurred during the 2010 - 11 income year would be exempt from paying the flood levy.

1 Judy from Maleny said a levy was to be expected.

“It’s only normal to think that we are all responsible for footing the bill as a result of a natural disaster,” she said.

“It’s not a lot of money if everyone is contributing.

2 Bill from Beerwah agreed with introducing a flood levy.

“Those poor buggers who lost everything, you can’t expect the government to foot the entire bill,” Bill said.

“There’s always someone worse off than ourselves.”

3 Marie from Beerwah also agreed with the levy, providing it was just a one-off.

“Considering the destruction it caused, I consider it my way of helping out,” Marie said.

“I would like to think that if I was in that situation, that others would do the same for me.”

4 Andrew from Landsborough had a different view.

“I am not impressed with the proposed levy,” he said.

“Although I feel sorry for all the victims of the floods, I see it as a reward for living in a flood zone,” “I chose to live on a hill, a conscious decision not to live in a flood zone.” Andrew said.

5 Bill from Peachester had a political viewpoint.

“I think it’s an excellent idea,” he said.

“The flood levy will help the government get the budget back into surplus in 2011-12. That is why Tony Abbott doesn’t like it, he wants Wayne Swan to look like a fool,” Bill said.

6 Christina from Beerwah said she thought the levy was a good idea.

“I think it’s a good thing, it was a terrible thing that happened,” Christina said.

“I used to live in Toowoomba, and couldn’t believe what I was seeing in the news reports.”

Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week

Smooth Davidson’s PlumDavidsonia johnsoniiAre you looking for an ornamental native tree that you can also get loads of edible fruit from? Then look no further than the Smooth Davidson’s Plum. It is the rarest of the three species of Davidsonia in Australia being found only in a handful of degraded sites between Ballina and the Currumbin Valley. It is a very bushy tree which grows 6-10m with showy foliage (bright red new growth), pink flowers and wonderful large plum like fruit. The plant can be pruned to keep the size down and also to ease access to the large quantities of fruit it produces. This plant is very popular in the bush food trade as it makes excellent jams and wines. The local wildlife will also like this one with many species being attracted to the flowers and fruit. It grows best in full sun to semi shade in a well drained position. It also makes an interesting pot specimen.

Glasshouse Country

Looking through my office window over the past two weeks, I have been watching the first of the Billbergia pyramidalis plants send up a flower. This simply stunning bromeliad has wide emerald-green leaves forming a relatively open medium-sized rosette. The flower head looks like an Olympic torch and is most impressive, with flamingo bracts and petals. The petals are tipped with cerise and bright yellow stamens. This plant is ideal as a pot plant or patio plant, but it also looks great under subtropical shrubs. This is one of the stoloniferous (running) billbergias that will gradually climb over any objects placed next to it. Curiously, if planted in good soil, the climbing habit is largely lost and the plants clump in the same way as many other bromeliads.

Billbergia pyramidalis and its hybrids are cool sensitive, so should only be grown in the subtropics, tropics or in a greenhouse. In cold conditions, the leaves become spotted and damaged, detracting from the otherwise flawless appearance. The flower, in true billbergia form, will only retain its beauty for a week to 10 days. In good shady protected locations the flower will retain its colour for a little longer. At this time of year if you are fortunate to have a sizable clump, you will have a mat of green foliage with these spectacular display of flamingo flowers. Then within four to five days the bracts burst open, to develop into this show of blue, purple and yellow. You will enjoy this short display of beauty and then the flower will fade to pale washed out pink with the seed pods hanging like a scruffy beard. This plant will not disappoint you with its all year green foliage and its display of beauty in mid to late summer. As with any of the stoloniferous bromeliads, you are able to cut off a stolon and plant in another location or pot up to give to a friend to share the enjoyment and beauty.Until next time, happy growing.

Spread Aussie spirit with flower powerAustralians are encouraged to buy a bunch of fresh flowers to brighten someone’s day, while supporting the Queensland flower industry after the recent floods.Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation’s lifestyle horticulture team leader Shane Holborn said buying a bunch of Queensland fresh flowers would help the state's cut flower and nursery industries to get back in business.“Quite a number of Queensland's flower businesses were affected by flooding,” he said.“From flower farmers in the Lockyer Valley to the wholesalers at Rocklea, Brisbane, the industry has been hit hard.Mr Holborn said fresh flower wholesalers and agents in the Rocklea area had worked tirelessly to be operating in time for the industry's peak sales time, Valentine's Day.For more information, call DEEDI’s Business Information Centre on 13 25 23 or visit www.deedi.qld.gov.au

CONSTRUCTION LOAN FAQ’SWhat is a construction loan? It’s a loan that allows a residence to be built on a vacant block. The block may have been purchased previously or at the same time as doing the building contract. Is the application process the same as a regular home loan?It is basically the same however there are a few differences which are outlined to you as part of the application process. Is there additional paperwork?Extra paperwork includes items such as building plans, building specifications, contract with the builder etc. The lender will usually want most or all of the above before they can do their

valuation as part of the loan application process. Does the building contract have to be a fixed price contract with a registered builder? Nearly all lenders prefer the construction loan to be a fixed price contract with a registered building company. An alternative to the above arrangement is a cost plus contract where the builder gives a quote for the completion of the contract but price may go up or down depending on the price of materials and or labour. There is another option for ‘owner builders’.

What do I need to be aware of with a construction loan? The loan itself is an “Interest Only” facility until the building is complete and the loan fully drawn. When the builder requests the first progress payment as per your building contract, this amount together with any existing vacant block loan is joined as one and becomes an interest only loan. The remaining progress payment amounts are added to this initial amount until the loan is fully drawn. The lender will usually do an inspection of the property at each progress payment stage

and the fees and charges for this inspection are usually an additional cost to the client. I often hear about “draw downs” with construction loans – what are they?“Draw downs” are the builder’s requests for funds as per the terms of your building contract. The builder will request a certain amount of funds at different stages of construction. The builder will send his invoice to you as the client for the “draw down”. The lender will then contact you to arrange the signing of a progress claim authority which authorizes release of the funds. This is also usually after the lender has conducted a progress inspection of the building.

Where is the property market heading? Some analysts predict a rise in house prices in the second half of this year, some say that we have not yet seen the bottom of the market. Whom to believe? Truth is that the prices have eased and in my opinion are most probably heading south for some time. What does this mean for the home owner?

You sell for less, but you also buy for less.So where is the problem? Fact is, properties with a reasonable price tag will attract buyers; overpriced properties will sit there, frustrating both owners and agents.

There can be new opportunities that can come out of the blue. A new job offer can work out very well. A short holiday will be enjoyable. A change of car is likely.CANCER June 22 – July 22This can be a very unsettled time. You may look at a new lifestyle, career and home. Even though the desire is to change your life, try not to be too hasty, think things over carefully before making the decision. Money can come to you unexpectedly. Plans for travel can be made.LEO July 23 – August 22A short trip can be made on the spur of the moment. New ideas and concepts can arise, giving you more energy and enthusiasm to succeed. Your personality and your gift of the gab can bring in unexpected profits. A new car is possible. Good news coming from family.VIRGO August 23 – September 22Plans for a short trip may be considered. A new opportunity can come out of the blue from a friend regarding work. This is a time for you to take care of your own needs. Letting go of the past will be important. The health of a family member could be a bit of a worry, but the results will be ok.

LIBRA September 23 – October 22This is a time of new beginnings; a very important decision will need to be made. Moving residence is likely soon. A pleasant surprise from a friend can brighten up your week. Doing something new and spontaneous can bring new and exciting people into your life.SCORPIO October 23 – November 22You may be pushing things a bit too fast at this period, this can have an effect on your finances so take things slowly. Your head can be crowded with ideas but you must sort them out systematically. Don’t try to take on too much at once.SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22The time ahead can be extremely favourable. This can be an excellent time for furthering your career. You will be accepted by those whose decisions count. Make sure you don’t sell yourself short. There could be some changes in the home at this period.CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19A strong attraction to the opposite sex can incline you to take chances. Court bluesA man was chosen for jury duty and he really wanted to be dismissed from serving. He tried every excuse he could think of, but none of them worked. On the day of the trial, he decided to give it one more shot. As the trial was about to begin, he asked if he could approach the bench.“Your Honour,” he said, “I must be excused from this trial because I am prejudiced against the defendant. I took one look at the man in the blue

suit with those beady eyes and that dishonest face and I said ‘He’s a crook! He’s guilty!’ So, your Honour, I cannot possibly stay on this jury!”With a tired annoyance the judge replied, “get back in the jury box, you fool. That man is the defendant’s lawyer.”Submitted by Jessica Coleman, Beerwah
