Background informationWFTO Conferences have been a key meeting point for WFTO members, a moment to discuss crucial issues within the organisation, meet old friends and new people, and think about the challenges the Fair Trade movement is facing as a whole and how to tackle these.

During the last WFTO biennial conference in 2017, over 300 participants from 60 countries came to debate and network in New Delhi, India The conference has brought more people than ever together to discuss Fair Trade issues and exchange ideas.

At the International Fair Trade Summit the attendees have the opportunity to explore ways in which enterprises are using their capital to create solutions to global trade inequalities. Now, more than ever, enterprises need to address social issues around the globe caused by an unequal economic system, disrupting conventional ways of doing business and being leading examples of innovative enterprise models

that have the 10 Fair Trade Principles at the core of their identity.

The 15th edition of the International Fair Trade Summit will be from the 15th – 19th of September 2019 (15th- 18th Summit, 18thst AGM), held in Lima and co-organized by the Peruvian Members of WFTO, with Allpa, Manos Amigas, PERULAND and Raymisa, as the coordinators of the event.

Why Peru?Peru has seen a growth of interest in Fair Trade over recent years and it has even further potential.

Critically, Peru is rich in skills and resources that are ideal for the artisanal nature of Fair Trade products. For instance, its alpaca production is fuelling the growth of an innovative fashion sector, and its food producers are also delivering increasingly innovative products to markets. Both are embracing Fair Trade principles, which help build a cohesive sectoral identity.

The Peruvian government, recognizing this potential as an opportunity to improve lives, has been increasingly supporting the development of Fair Trade within Peru. All this can inspire attendees who will feel the dynamism of, and collect insights from, Peru’s burgeoning Fair Trade community.

There will be about 300 participants from different organisations and businesses around the World, Peruvian Government leaders, policy makers, social enterprises, Fair Trade buyers, Fair Trade actors, including WFTO members and national Fair Trade Networks.

In the 15th International Fair Trade Summit we want to focus on new markets, the new ethical consumer and how to reach these.

We also want to foster Fair Trade alliances among food producers, discuss the challenges in the sector and how to attract food producers to our movement.

The International Fair Trade Summit is an opportunity for the movement and especially Fair Trade Enterprises, to strengthen their relationships and stimulate collaboration. WFTOs role is to facilitate a flourishing environment for discussions, support the members in improving their skills and promote collaboration among themselves. Using WFTO Peruvian members as an example, we aim to inspire others in embracing Fair Trade practices, sharing knowledge and promote sustainability.

What to expect in Lima, Peru

As a sponsor, you become a prominent part of the Fair Trade movement, recognised by consumers, businesses, campaigners and Fair Trade enterprises as a champion of Fair Trade.

The Summit will further be a critical social media moment for the Fair Trade movement in 2019, with WFTO having tens of thousands of followers around the globe.
