Now I would like to share with you a quick ‘snapshot’ of my educational vision so that you might come to know me better. As you are aware, at Loreto our vision is to offer a Catholic education which liberates, empowers and motivates students to use their individual gifts with confidence, creativity and generosity in loving and responsible service. As Principal, my educational vision, in keeping with this emphasis, is for “learning to be at the heart; about the heart; and from the heart”. As with Parker J Palmer, I believe that “good teaching . . . is rooted in the identity and integrity of the teacher. Good teaching takes myriad forms but good teachers share one trait; they are authentically present in the classroom, deeply concerned with their students and their subject. These are held in the teacher’s heart – the place where intellect, emotion and spirit converge in the human self. Good teachers weave a life‐giving web between themselves, their subjects and their students, helping their students learn how to weave a world for themselves”. Loreto’s teachers teach from the heart. They are highly skilled, experienced and dedicated professionals who actively seek to acknowledge and celebrate the God given gifts of each learner. They seek to empower and liberate their students through an understanding and acceptance of self and others: “learning about and from the heart”. Loreto promotes this love of learning: “learning at the heart” through the lens of the five essential elements of a Mary Ward education: Freedom, Justice, Sincerity, Verity and Felicity. Having the opportunity as a Principal to lead and facilitate engaging learning environments, that are informed by Gospel values that encourage a love of learning, a sense of fun, creative, critical and divergent thinking, intellectual rigour and a commitment to the giving of one’s personal best, is both a passion and a privilege. In the coming months I will be seeking your views about, and your hopes for, Loreto, by way of a whole school on‐line survey. Students, staff and parents will all be invited to contribute. I strongly encourage you to take part so that you might assist the Leadership Team and the College Council to shape the future directions of the College with confidence. In anticipation, I sincerely thank you for your time and your input. BE AWARE We have been advised by the Office of the Regional Director of the Department of Education that ap‐ proaches have been made by unknown adults to students waiting at bus stops at a number of locations in Brisbane. We ask that, as parents, you please take this opportunity to remind your daughters about safe travel to and from school and to discuss strategies to stay safe. WE PRAY “God Dances With Us” God, you invite us to dance in delight, shaping and forming in figures of grace. We move to the pulse of creation’s music and rejoice to be part of the making of earth. Praise in the making, the sharing, the moving; praise to the God who dances with us. In the steps of Jesus we reach to our partners, touching and holding and finding our strengths. Together we move into patterns of freedom, and rejoice to be part of the sharing of hope. Praise in the making, the sharing, the moving; praise to the God who dances with us. We whirl and spin in the Spirit’s rhythm, embracing the world with our circles of joy. Together we dance for salvation and justice, and rejoice to be part of the moving of love. Praise in the making, the sharing, the moving; praise to the God who dances with us. Amen.

They meet once a month on a Wednesday to plan these events, starting with a social Welcome Supper tomorrow night Wednesday 16 February from 7.30pm ‐ 9.00pm in Room 605 next to the Chapel. New parents are always welcome and tomorrow night would be a perfect time to come along and introduce yourself ‐ supper is provided ‐ so we hope to see you there!

Computer Studies 2011 Senior Computing at Loreto started early in 2011 with Eloise Rimon attending the National Computer Science School in Sydney for workshops in areas of study such as website de‐sign, robotics and programming. A copy of a written report by Eloise follows.
From 2 ‐ 11 January, around 75 students accompanied by 30 tutors from all around Australia, were given the privilege of being invited to participate in the National Computer Science School course, held in Sydney. Spending ten days at the Women’s college, we were split into 6 groups; 4 groups learning web design and 2 groups partaking in embedded systems.
Being placed into the embedded group, I was presented with the opportunity to program Roombas (small robots) using an arduino board to independently drive through a course, perform a rescue and end the challenge with a dance and song. This was not only challenging but very exciting and insightful. The level of experience of programming varied among the students but through the daily labs and lectures, each group succeeded in programming their robots and designing their websites.
Though programming, web design and robotics were the main aspects of this course, we also participated in nightly activities including constructing towers out of newspaper, trivia night, and programming competitions. For two days we got a good insight into what it would be like to work in the IT industry while visiting big companies such as Atlassian, Altium, Macquarie and Google. Each company was then chosen to interview a number of NCSS students as if we were applying for a job at their company, which many would agree, was very scary but very exciting.
The camp concluded with a final ceremony where each
group had the chance to present their final projects that
they had been working on for the last nine days, and each
student was presented with a certificate. It was an amazing
experience that I thoroughly enjoyed and would love to do
again in the year to come. I encourage anyone who has the
chance to participate, to do so, as it was insightful,
enjoyable and a wonderful way to meet people who share
the same interests in IT. I would like to thank Mr Lane‐
Richardson for this opportunity, the staff and the lecturers
of NCSS who put this amazing event together. Other events
on the immediate calendar include:
On 19 May, the Australian Informatics Competition, run by the Canberra University on behalf of the Australian Mathematics Trust will be held. This is a one hour test held at the school, no computers are required. The competition will be of particular interest to students who have an interest in Mathematics and/or Computing. The competition has a senior level for years 11 and 12 and two junior levels. Registration for this competition closes soon for those who are interested in trying something different. Tutoring will be made available to students in
senior years.
Later in Term One, the Computer Club will be hosting workshops for Robotics. Once the robots become available, students in years 8 and 9 are invited to indulge in robot technology. If enough students express an interest there are opportunities to take part in robotic competitions.
Any student who is interested in, or parent who wants to know more about the above activities, is invited to contact Mr Lane‐Richardson in room 210 or by email:
[email protected] A. Lane‐Richardson ‐ Senior Studies ‐ ICT Coordinator
will be contacted. The recommended collection point for parents after the dance is in Duhig Place or Rogers St by 10.45 p.m.

Loreto Past Pupils Association
Welcome to all the families in the Loreto community from the Past Pupils' Association! We especially welcome new parents who are being introduced to the charism of Mary Ward and the value of Felicity which is our focus for 2011. Within our community we hope to realise the deep joy of caring for others. Promises of financial support from our sister associations in Kirribilli and Toorak for needy Coorparoo families affected by recent flooding have given substance to this ideal. Later this year there will be a Spring Luncheon to which all are invited and where you can mix with friends from Loreto interstate and overseas. For all past students of Loreto Coorparoo. There is an invitation to join us for a glass of wine before the Afternoon Tea, Reunion and AGM on Sunday week, 27th February, at 4pm in the Mary Ward Centre. Year 8 News Today, I have included an Invitation to Open Day on Tuesday 22 February. This day starts with an assembly in the Mary Ward Centre at 8.30am. I have also included a lesson time‐table and map of the school to help assist you in finding your daughter during the day. I look forward to meeting many of you again on Open Day. Please also find attached to this newsletter the Year 8 Assessment Planner for Semester One. This will assist you in keeping track of the assessment items given and when they are due. It also helps the girls with time management. Assignments are always given out several weeks or more before they are due and class time is spent on research. If girls are completing their assignments at the last minute, ie the night before, it suggests their time in class and on homework has not been well managed. Please keep this planner in an obvious place so both you and your daughters are well aware of due dates of all tasks.
Jenny Strachan ‐ Year 8 Coordinator

Four hundred years ago, Mary Ward said, “Women in time will come to do much” and “Do good and do it well”.
Just like their peers of years past, the Loreto College Coorparoo Year 12 graduates of 2010 have once again demonstrated these values in many ways but particularly when we consider their academic results.
While the table below shows the excellent distribution of Overall Positions (OPs) over recent years, we believe that the most important indicator of success is the percentage of students who were offered a Tertiary place through The Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC).
For example, the group of columns on the far right of the table shows that 26% of the Year 12 Students of 2010 were awarded OPs in the 1-5 range, 59% in the 1-10 range and 88% in the 1-15 range. These fine achievements resulted in 95.4% of these students being offered a tertiary place in February this year to continue their studies from 2011 onwards. Indeed, these achievements are wonderful. However, they continue a trend which has been set over many years at Loreto College Coorparoo. Closer examination of the results from 2006-2010 show only small variations in the four measures displayed.
We offer our congratulations to our graduates of last year. We also thank all the staff who taught them so well and their parents who supported them through their challenging times in 2009 and 2010.
