In a quantum world, a single particle can simultaneously exist in mutually exclusive states, for instance
at two different positions A and B. It is possible to represent a huge amount of information by small
number of particles using this linear superposition principle of quantum mechanics. Based on this
strange nature of a quantum world, a quantum computer can solve a hard problem that an even fastest
super-computer of today cannot. I will discuss the principle and the state of the art I research of
quantum computation.

Combining logic programming with description LogicWe study a reasoning mechanism for handling taxonomic, assertional and rule-based knowledge, by incorporating the resolution proof system of logic programming to description logic. In order to deal with taxonomic knowledge, description logic contains as components a concept language and a tableau-based reasoning method for deciding satisfiability and subsumption for concept expressions. On the other hand, logic programming languages provide a computational query language for facts and rules, where facts and rules correspond to assertional and rule-based knowledge.
Discovery of communities in the WebMany related Web pages are connected with each other by hyperlinks. If we regard each Web page as a vertex and each hyperlink as an edge, characteristic graph structures are often observed. Such graph structures enable us to discover many related Web pages without analyzing the contents of the pages. In this presentation, researches for discovering Web communities (Web pages tightly connected by hyperlinks) are introduced.
How to speed up programs up to thousand time of the original? To speed programs up, we usually tune up programs or purchase a fast computer. The increase factor may be up to 10, or up to 100 if we use parallel computation. However, sometimes we can reduce the computation time 1/10000 by making ""well designed program."" I introduce the "algorithm" which is the theory of designing programs.
Application of asynchronous systems and their designComputers commonly used for many years have "clock systems" to sequence processes and control their timings. These clock systems, however, cause several problems in increasing the performance and reducing power consumption. On the other hand, a computer can be designed without any global clock systems, which is called asynchronous systems. Such an asynchronous system has potential for solving the above problems that synchronous systems are now faced with. This talk introduces the applications that are suitable for asynchronous systems, and shows a synthesis tool for asynchronous systems.
Research on ubiquitous computing networksA ubiquitous computing network includes an extraordinary large number of interconnected computers that work cooperatively in sustaining the social activities of human beings. Our research focuses on the two topics: context-aware information delivery network systems and privacy and security issues for ubiquitous computing. The context-aware information delivery network system acquires the user context from the user, analyzes it and automatically provides the information and services that users want. As the user context is privacy-sensitive by nature, the network requires a robust privacy and security control mechanism.
Development of photonic networkWe have been developing basic technologies for next-generation photonic network which is based on cost-effective optical devices and intergraded photonic architecture. The presentation will show recent activities of developments, including control scheme for photonic integrated network, and the results will be transferred to existing SuperSINET and the future SINET.
Constraint programming for user interfacesConstraint programming, a programming paradigm that allows declarative specification of constraints, is a powerful tool for solving various problems, and has been widely used in areas such as artificial intelligence, logic programming, and user interfaces. This talk outlines constraint programming for user interfaces, and presents constraint programming technologies developed by the speaker.
Middleware for ubiquitous computingSeveral frameworks for building and managing ubiquitous computing environments are presented. They provide middleware-level software for distributed and mobile computing systems and allow us to develop various applications for these environments.
Interactive methods in information space based on associationThe associative methods of information gathering, analyzing, and visualization in information space should be related to the associative retrieval or implicit memory in the human brain. This is crucial to realize the interactive method that stimulates our creativity. We develop "Informatics of association" to provide the theoretical basis for this creative interaction, and apply it to design a new interactive method with which users can self-navigate in vast document space without losing themselves.
3D shape comparison using multiview imagesComparing and matching 3D shapes is a fundamental problem in 3D shape modeling, retrieval, and recognition. We address this problem using the similarities among the images associated with multiple viewpoints. Our method can be applied to many types of shape representations, including polygonal models, voxels, and image-based representations.
A graph-based approach for extracting and utilizing knowledge -Automatic generation of bilingual thesaurus using Japanese-English keyword pairs
Multilingual thesaurus of academic terms is an Internet-oriented linguistic resource that enables information dissemination across different communities and/or languages. The presentation introduces an approach for automatically generating a bilingual dictionary of academic terms by analyzing correspondences between the keyword pairs provided by the authors' of academic papers. Also introduced, as a demonstration, is an online dictionary generated from the text resources provided by NII.
Knowledge sharing via the InternetWe introduce various ways for knowledge sharing via the Internet. The topics includes the system that can generate shared topics network with WWW bookmarks, and the algorithm to calculate mapping between internet directories.
Human-robot interactionAs pet robots and sweeping robots are utilized at home, interaction between human and robots becomes a very important issue. My talk briefly introduces how to design the interaction between human and robots in various fields (called Human Robot Interaction), and presents some interesting experiments using a real mobile robot.
Computer chess boardAccording to recent news, a computer has defeated the human chess champion. A computers is a formidable game player these days, however, there are no chess board which can really connect to a computer. So we developed a chess board like device which can interface between human and computers.
The NII NLP project: The intersection of multilingualioty and lexicologyNII carries out a research in NLP, specialized in the field of specialized lexicology and lexical processing with special reference to the multi-lingual applications. In the presentation, I will sketch the overall framework of the research and explains the essential components of the research, i.e. the corpus, basic processing techniques and applications.

A study on coordination between speech and gesturesPeople often produce gestures while speaking, but how are they coordinated with each other? The present study approaches this question from the viewpoint of ecological psychology and attempts to elucidate the underlying mechanism of such coordination. We are particularly interested in determining what information constrains the coordination by additionally looking at breathing movements as a subsystem of both articulation and gesticulation.
Character codes and databaseCharacter code is the most frequently used data representation in databases or any other data. But, still many problems are unsolved in this field, especially when you handle non Latin alphabets or non English languages. This presentation identifies the problems, investigates theoretical basis, and seek practical solutions.
Study on relationship between Informatics and other research fields in JapanInformatics is classified as ""Compound Area"" in the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, which indicates it has strong relationship with other research fields. Based on statistical analyses of common keywords extracted from research themes of each researcher in the Researchers Directory Database, produced by NII, we have been making the study for the relations among the Informatics-related fields.
NTCIR-4 WEB: An evaluation workshop for Web information access systemsAn Evaluation Workshop, ""NTCIR-4 WEB,"" mainly aims at comparing effectiveness of information access systems for large-scale heterogeneous information on the Web, and constructing Web test collections. We design several kinds of evaluation models, capturing actual use of the Web from various aspects, such as (1) the model where the user attempts to find non-redundant pages relevant to the topic that a query exhibits, and (2) the model where the user attempts to find one or a small number of his/her known pages.
Research on creativity in R&D activitiesIn order to promote scientific research, research proposals with originality would early be distinguished and supported, and environment bearing originality should be made clear and developed much more. Themes of this research are analysis on environment cultivating originality, study on concepts of creativity and identification of creative researches, and research on enhancement of creativity in fields of science, technology and corporate organizations.
Digital Silk Roads projectThis project aims to create digital archives of geographically dispersed cultural heritages along the Silk Road through Internet collaboration. As the cultural heritages along the historic Silk Road are dispersed over a number of Asian countries, this project provides a good opportunity for international collaboration in which each country concerned can contribute to achieving a common goal by providing contents and expertise. In order to create digital archives of such geographically dispersed entities, GMR(Global Multimedia Repository) concept was proposed at The Tokyo symposium for Digital Silk Roads. The prototype of Bamiyan Virtual Museum is demonstrated so that we can recall the past Afghanistan historical and cultural heritage.

Mathematics of iterative solversLarge systems of linear equations or least-squares problems whose coefficient matrix is singular arise, for instance, in the finite difference approximation of partial differential equations with Neumann boundary condition. In this presentation, we will derive the necessary and sufficient condition for the GMRES (Generalized Minimum Residual) method, a powerful iterative solver, to give the least-squares solution without break-down for such singular systems.
An approach to comparative genome informaticsCompletion of human genome sequencing has been announced worldwide several weeks ago in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the discovery of DNA double helix. However, much more information from other species will be required to understand the biological meaning written in the human genome. As one of the possible approaches, we are planning to operate a genome based, at first, bio-portal site at NII.

Speculative computingWe propose a method of distributed problem solving under incomplete information environment. To solve the problem, we propose a method using abduction. Abduction is a way of reasoning where some hypothesis will be used to complement unknown information. The idea is as follows. When communication is delayed or failed, then we use a default hypothesis as a tentative answer and continue computation. When some response is obtained, we check consistency of the response and the current computation. If the response is consistent, then we continue the current computation; else if the response is inconsistent, we seek an alternative computation. This way of computation is called speculative computation since computation using a tentative answer would lead to a significant advantage if it succeeds.
Fast enumeration algorithmsI will show some demonstration of execution of enumeration algorithms on PC, which are for enumerating cliques of a graph (clusters of a data set) and paths of a graph. Naive algorithms are quite slow, and advanced algorithms are quite fast.
Ontology forge - Text mining in a semantic Web worldText mining aims to automatically and reliably extract prototypical facts from large text collections such as company take-overs (news) or protein-interactions (functional genomics). Approaches based on information extraction technology focus on shallow semantics such as named entities in order to build up a template view of part of the text but this approach suffers from not being able to offer the computer a deeper understanding of the mined information. In order to increase portability of knowledge and to allow the text mining system to incorporate deeper semantic knowledge of concept classes, properties (slots), relations and axioms we are developing a front-end environment which allows domain-experts to specify such knowledge cooperatively online in the form of an ontology. Once an ontology has been agreed, a representative set of texts can be annotated according to the specified classes and given to the information extraction system to learn from so that future texts in the domain can be automatically mined for similar facts. This presentation introduces an overview of the system and also outlines the experiments we have recently done using support vector machines in extending the named entity task to domain-based terminology identification and classification for functional genomics.

Quantum information processingThe overview of quantum information processing is given. Focuses are on quantum computation and quantum cryptography. The former provides strong method to crack conventional RSA type cryptographies by realizing polynomial time algorithm of factoring and discrete log, while the latter provides new security system which ensures unconditional security independent of complexity theoretic assumptions.
Study on the relationship between propositional and procedural knowledge--- Through an investigation of constructive logicsThere are two kinds of knowledge in human/machine intelligence: the prepositional knowledge (facts, laws and theorems) and the procedural one (methods, algorithms and equation-solving). They are not independent, but in a tight relation to each other. That is most prominently seen in constructive logics and mathematics, where a constructive proof of a theorem describes an algorithm. We aim to clarify this connection, in particular the correspondence between the complexity of proofs and that of algorithms.
Study on security and privacy models in ubiquitous environmentsWhile the users make use of computer networks in ubiquitous environments are always able to access the information they need, they are always exposed to danger of their individual information flowing out. In this study, we will clarify the security and privacy problems in ubiquitous environments, and discuss the security and privacy models and how to apply them to network systems.

Network control schemes for very fast internetFor exploiting the potential of high speed networks, it is crucial to adopt appropriate network control schemes. We discuss here topics including the study on Limited Resource Next Hop Resolution Protocol which realizes cut-through for IP communications over ATM networks, deployment of MPLS VPN which realize virtual private networks over the Internet, and the configuration scheme for GMPLS networks.
Research on providing the quality of service in multi-service networksTo provide the quality of service based on the requirements of applications or users is necessary in the internet which is shared by all kinds of users and applications. This presentation will be focused on the research of traffic analysis and control methods for providing the quality of service in high speed networks.
A dymanic assignment of light path in WDM networksIn order to make efficient use of limited resources of optical networks, it is necessary to assign light paths to various services and to multiplex traffics to a single light path. A dynamic light path assignment is proposed to do connection admission control according to required bandwidth of a new connection and the utilization status of light path. The proposed method makes it possible to accept connections with different required bandwidths fairly or to accept connections of certain classes with a high priority.
Perfomance evaluation for long-range dependent traffic of the InternetIt has been reported that local area network(LAN) traffic and Internet backbone traffic have long-range dependence, and also that the long-range dependent traffic has a bad influence on QoS. Thus, an analysis method of the long-range dependent traffic is needed to design an efficient network, In this report, we present a new analysis method using FBM(Fractional Brownian Motion) traffic model which is applied to divided areas of variance-time curve of the LAN traffic and backbone traffic.
SSS-PC: The next generation operating systemTakashi Matsumoto and his project members are developing a new generation operating system named SSS-PC (three S PC) which runs on commodity PCs in offices and makes up a highly-dependable and high-performance computer system. SSS-PC can integrate up to a hundred thousands of PCs into a single high performance parallel computer. Furthermore, SSS-PC lets users do maintenance works such as machine replacement or component inspection without stopping running applications, and dynamically extend or reduce system configuration without system suspension. LINUX or UNIX applications can be ported to SSS-PC without modifying source codes by using compatible program development environment. Popularity is planned to be gained from server computers where high availability and non stop requirements for applications are high.

This is crucial to realize the interactive method that stimulates our creativity. We develop ""Informatics of association"" to provide the theoretical basis for this creative interaction, and apply it to design a new interactive method with which users can self-navigate in vast document space without losing themselves.
Component-oriented extensible operating systemA very large amount of control software is being developed every year, and it is highly desired to improve productivity of these program developments. Here control software is a program used in control systems, embedded systems etc. Control systems frequently require very specific functions, such as very sophisticated distributed processing, and general purpose OS's are not sufficient. To answer these requirements, an adequate Operating System, which is extensible, customizable, easy programmable and robust, is desired. In this research, a new Operating System structure has been studied. It is characterized by the L4 micro-kernel and multi-server scheme, where each OS service (e.g. process service, file service, NW service,,,) is provided by a user-level separated process, and is easily added/replaced. Two types of OS (L4minix-S and L4minix-E) have been implemented.

Motion planning by optical flowWe propose a motion planning for autonomous robot employing optical flow detection. Assuming an autonomous robot is moving on a flat plane, it is possible to detect obstacles detecting dominant plane on which the robot moves. Optical flow which is computed from a sequence of images permits us to detect dominate plane by tensor matching between observed images and the model one. An autonomous robot observes a sequence of images from cameras mounted on it. Therefore, a moving robot with mounted cameras computes optical flow. This sequence of tensor images determines the dominate plane and obstacles. We developed an algorithm suitable to humanoid robots.
PDE-based method for resolution conversion and super-resolutionWe propose a superresolution method for gray-level images based on resolution conversion of discrete terrain in a space. Our resolution-conversion method first considers a gray-level image as a discrete terrain in a space. Second, a boundary surface of the discrete terrain is deformed by a discrete diffusion process. Third, a smooth surface is estimated from the deformed boundary surface using B-spline interpolation. Finally, a high-resolution surface for the profile of gray-level image is generated by resampling the estimated smooth surface.

Some illustrative analytical results are also shown where the proposed detection method is applied for the clustering of newspaper the‘community degree’ of different Web sites.
Estimating human motion trajectory using fixation-point correspondence and optical flowWe propose a method for estimating the motion trajectory of a human wearing an active camera. Our method controls the active camera so that the camera automatically fixates its optical axis to its fixation point. The correspondence of the fixation point over two frames together with the optical-flow-based correspondence of points obtained nearby the fixation point gives us sufficient constraints to determine the motion of the human.

Integrating multiple Internet directories by instance-based learningFinding desired information on the Internet is becoming increasingly difficult. Internet directories such as Yahoo!, which organize web pages into hierarchical categories, provide one solution to this problem; however, such directories are of limited use because some bias is applied both in the collection and categorization of pages. We propose a method for integrating multiple Internet directories by instance-based learning. Our method provides the mapping of categories in order to transfer documents from one directory to another, instead of simply merging two directories into one. We present herein an effective algorithm for determining similar categories between two directories via a statistical method called the k-statistic. In order to evaluate the proposed method, we conducted experiments using two actual Internet directories, Yahoo! and Google. The results show that the proposed method achieves extensive improvements relative to both the Naive Bayes and Enhanced Naive Bayes approaches, without any text analysis on documents.

Value added approach to information retrievalThis paper outlines “Value-Added” approach to information retrieval (IR) and introduces 4 example systems. “Value-Added” is an approach that human assigns a kind of “value”, to each of the contents, which is effective to description and access to the information contents. The “value” includes, for example, classification, meta data, citation, access logs, etc., Content‘s about ness is described using the domain-oriented framework, and other aspects of the contents, such as, context (user’s task and purpose of the retrieval), meaning, human ratings, are described as well. The laboratory-typed testing of “Content-based” IR looks search effectiveness of the search engine in the condition of clearly defined questions are given, then has placed emphasis on generalized and robust systems to retrieve topically relevant documents. The value-added approach is to connect such IR search engines and human and/or society.
