OCTOBER 2012 - MARCH 2013ENRP NEWS LETTER

very morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.

The moral: It doesn’t matter if you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better be running.

Yes, be it a project under execution like Kalinganagar, or projects under development like Tiruldih, Tubed, Mandakini, Dugar, Odisha Project- we have to keep running …..faster and faster…..following the credo of “Execution Excellence”, keep innovating and be a growth engine for Tata Power. We have to break annual targets into smaller quarterly, monthly and down to weekly roadmaps, keep reviewing, learning, adapting to fulfill the promise we have made to ourselves and to the company. Once we make a promise, it’s a promise and we have to deliver. We need to be resolute on this. Last year was a mix bag, we could achieve a lot, a lot still remains to be done and quickly. We clearly are seeing green shoots sprouting all over in projects under development and we need to keep nourishing them with our unabated energy levels to reach the start date at the earliest. Kalinganagar has been through challenging times in the recent past and our colleagues have stood up to the trying times to emerge winners. In today’s fast changing environment, situations suddenly may change and we need to be ever ready with our alternate plans. We by default should have Plan A, an alternative Plan B and rough contours of Plan C always ready to reorient ourselves.

The New Year beckons us and just as we had “Moksha Resolutions” last year, some of us in ENRP will again assemble in April to create a roadmap for the year. It promises to be an exciting year, Tiruldih land acquisition has gathered momentum, we need to keep running to reach zero date in coming months, one of our coal mining ventures will dig out coal within this year, Kalinganagar would reach commissioning stage, and a new project could be on the anvil. All in all it promises to be a busy, running year.

So Keep Running………….With regards, Mr. Sanjay Aggarwal,

Chief-Projects, ENRP

Special Events

As Tata Power is aiming at a multi-fold growth in the days to come, this could be fulfilled by a number of upcoming projects, which are either in Project Development or

Project Implementation stage. And while operating in India, one of the basic economic problems which the country is facing is how to allocate scarce land to unlimited uses in an environmentally sustainable way.

Considering the above challenge, a Workshop on Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation and Resettlement was organized in Ranchi on 22nd – 23rd January 2013. The central objective of the workshop was to handle and mitigate the issues on Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation & Resettlement (LARR) through experience sharing and collective learning. Also, this workshop was aimed to have a discussion on the draft LARR bill. The workshop was organized for two days. Representatives dealing in LARR had come from various sites to share their experiences. We also had representatives from our JV companies, TCML and MCCL. Experts from Tata Steel, Monnet and HINDALCO had also participated and shared their experiences and learnings. Mr. A K Rastogi, Secretary, Department of Revenue & Land Reforms graced the occasion as the Chief Guest to inaugurate the event. Mr. Alok Kumar, Head – Department of Forest and Environment, CCL had been invited as a speaker for Expert Talk on second day.

Speaking on the occasion in his Key note Address, Mr. Sanjay Aggarwal, Chief Projects – ENRP explained the backdrop and the purpose of the objective of this workshop. He also highlighted the definition of development and also focused that how sometimes softer ways of handling the land losers can bring bigger changes.

Mr. A K Rastogi emphasized on inclusive growth and winning the PAP’s confidence by meaningful and tangible actions. He also praised the Tata Group’s Philosophy of Neighbor of Choice. Mr. Alok Kumar in his Expert talk explained the challenges and mitigation strategies in Forest diversion plan.

Based on the experiences from our various projects, the forum developed the ‘must do” template which can be useful in the upcoming Land Acquisition and R & R initiatives of the organization.

Campusto Corporate Workshopas part of GET Set Go! 18th Jan 2013.

Like last year, this year too, I set off on a mission to familiarize the fresh campus graduates with the nuances of the corporate world. This program that we call “Campus

to Corporate” started with the GET Batch FY 13 stationed

at Ranchi, Noida, Kalinganagar and Jamshedpur all getting together in the Training Room of our Jamshedpur plant and familiarizing themselves with each other and me over some fun filled icebreakers. I tried to open the minds of GETs to the fact that spoon feeding is something one should not expect in an organization though some experiential learning. We then went on to understand and appreciate the uniqueness each member has to bring to the team through a game. There was another fun filled exercise of the human web in which everyone realized how we are strategically tied up to each other in an organization and taking an impulsive stand is never good for the long term solution. What followed was a case study to understand the importance of vision,

mission and values of the organization and how it impacts each employee’s career. The laziness which had set in after lunch was shaken off by a role playing exercise where everyone

found themselves experiencing the different challenges of GETs, middle managers and HOD’s . We finished the session with some skits which highlighted communication skills and corporate etiquette necessary for a professional in Tata Power and a video which summarized most of what we had learnt. My best feedback for this session was the GETs requesting that this program be repeated for all the GETs across Tata Power for this batch. Personally there was nothing more fulfilling than a GET telling me that now he has not only accepted that the road ahead is tougher than before , but also feels that it is up to his attitude to tread on it successfully. – Neha Wakhlu , HR

Winter fete FY 12-13

Special Events

The months of January saw the Eastern Region Plants and Services Divisions of Tata Power celebrate through “Winter

Fete”. The aim of the HR (at Noida and Divisions) , HOD’s and

CFTs in this Fete was to encourage employees and family members to think out of the box, innovate and make best practices a part of their professional and personal routine. This Fete also served another purpose, which was to help in collecting entries for the “Knowledge and Best Practices Fair” held in February 2013 through a common platform. The winning entries from these Fete’s were sent to BE team by Department HODs.Employees and their family members set up stalls in which they displayed Best Practices and Innovations. Even housewives, working spouses put up stalls of efficient work practices they had adopted in their homes/offices. Children of employees put up projects they had been working on in school. There were lots of game stalls and magic shows, the money collected from the event went to charity. We cannot even begin to describe the energy and enthusiasm with which the employees and family members responded at the event. All present

at the venue, irrespective of age, gender or seniority felt the child in them come out while participating in games. Moreover employees felt very motivated that an opportunity

was provided not only to them, but also to their spouses and children to showcase their innovations. Many viewers got to know some best practices which they can inculcate in their daily lives.

MEPL conducted its Fete on the beach, and Rithala had sports events for wives of employees. In ERP Fete held in Kalinganagar, Department Heads dished out exciting recipies and dishes. Haldia too hosted a food festival. All in all ERP, Haldia and Services sites truly enjoyed the festivities of winter in a truly innovative style.

Moreover employees located in remote locations of services division felt that they were truly an integral part of the “Tata Company” as the company had invested so much time and energy in making this happen at each services site. Each site brought its uniqueness to the Fete.

Called “Communicate to Win”, this program was designed to cater the following areas : > Make every employee a better listener so that they can view the others viewpoints in an unbiased manner thereby solving communication across generation gaps and different departments > Make every employee a better communicator who understands the audience and modifies communication style to suit the kind of audience and situation he /she is making > Make young employees appreciate the experience of senior employees and make senior employees appreciate the energy of younger ones thus making them collaborate together > Effective written communication skills(memos, emails) > Effective Presentation Skills (PPTs) > Basic Corporate Etiquette > How to present an idea in an efficient manner

This session affected the participants so much that for the next week the whole office was buzzing with key concepts learnt in the session over lunch breaks and meetings.

Our plan is to extend this wave which encourages “Alignment in Communication” to other sites with diverse workforce like Maithon. -HR Team

“Communicate to Lead ” in Noida Office This financial year has seen the Noida office of Tata Power expand and rapidly develop into a conglomerate of many

new departments and employees. The increase in the number of departments was followed by transfers of existing employees to other locations of Tata Power, Similarly a steady flow of employees from all across the Power Sector and other regions of Tata Power took place. This resulted into development of a rapidly expanding and diverse workforce, with employees joining across various age groups (executives to VPs) and from various other sectors. Each employee carried along with him /her, a set of unique experiences, ideas, energy levels and perceptions. Where on one hand, variety in knowledge and perceptions can contribute in a substantial way to the organization, we as HR felt there was need to channelize this diverse workforce into a synergised way of functioning. On receiving encouragement from the various head of departments in the office, we designed a special 2 day program with Dale Carnegie Institute which is one of the best in this area of specialization.

A picnic is a day of outing, with no work and of course lots of fun and games.A picnic was organized by The Tata Power Tiruldih Team on 4th February, 2013 at Hill View Resort, Jamshedpur. Ample preparations were made before the picnic, the place, the schedule, vehicle arrangement and so on. In fact games were also planned in advance so that the time spent is utilized fruitfully. Someone has rightly quoted-“I can't think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a place where you are ignorant of almost everything”. There are some places in India that are special, and Odisha is definitely one of them. Filled with exquisite temples and extraordinary monuments, possessing beaches, wildlife sanctuaries, ,home to many thousands of prolific artists and craftsmen and natural landscape of often-enchanting beauty, Odisha is a unique and fascinating land that is, nevertheless, still largely undiscovered by tourists. Tourism in Odisha is a veritable museum of India's sculptural and artistic heritage and has long been famous to scholars and connoisseurs for the magnificent Sun Temple at Konark (The legendary 'Black Pagoda' of European mariners), for the majestic temple of Lord Jagannath at Puri (renowned for the spectacular Rath Yatra chariot festival), and for the glorious temples of Bhubaneswar.

About one-third of Odisha is covered by forest which boasts of 18 sanctuaries including 2 national parks. It’s a true delight for the nature lovers, offering adventurous Wildlife tours. One of the famous Wildlife Sanctuary Nandan Kanan means "garden of pleasure", and is a combination of zoo, botanical garden and sanctuary. The Chandipur beach is special because it observes a retreat of the sea everyday by several kilometers. The Balighai Beach attracts the tourists for offering a clear view of a river meeting with the sea, an inspirational picture for creative professionals. You will be astonished with the glory of

Historic antiquities with the history stretches back over 2000 years. Just south of Puri, the sea mixes with the 1100 sq.km inland Chilika lake which attracts around 150 species of migratory birds every year during winter and hence is a bird-watchers paradise. The ikat textiles have become famous throughout the world.

With numerous religions, ancient temples, local shrines, tribes and an array of sacred places, Odisha is a place to mark out for Family Holiday Destination. The land of this East Indian state is known for holding uniqueness of culture and nature, making Odisha worth to go. Go for an Odisha Tour and have a superb experience and you will surely feel-“The journey is the destination”.
