Our 2013 Quagmire of Change
• The close of 2013 saw us still not migrating clients to Windows 7 Business background: Major internal organisational change
SYMANTEC VISION 2014 36 Presentation Identifier Goes Here
Challenges
This is two major projects. In order to manage Windows 7 we’ll need Altiris 7
Project delivery timescales shrunk to 6 months with reduced budget Tech teams have no prior exposure to a managed Windows 7 platform or the CMS7 management tools.
SYMANTEC VISION 2014 37 Presentation Identifier Goes Here
Responding to the Challenge
SYMANTEC VISION 2014 38 Presentation Identifier Goes Here
General Approach
Examine client upgrade scenarios. Do everything possible to remove delays due to remediation.
Ensure the bare minimum people have to be involved in the deployment process Make everything look as simple as possible to tech teams
The ‘best’ solution is not always the solution that’s technically the best.

• Deployment simplifications meant that the Altiris team was rarely called upon to assist.
• Most users very pleased with the upgrade process.

Meeting the Challenges… 1. Coding 2. Infrastructure 3. Deployment 4. Remediation 5. Software 6. Hardware
41 Presentation Identifier Goes Here
SYMANTEC VISION 2014 42 Presentation Identifier Goes Here
Coding Challenge
Challenge Even with simplification, lots of custom code to write to make the Windows 7 migrations work. Timescales just don’t fit into time available.
Solution Drop quality standards. Let code pass for now that makes you *shudder*.
Assessment It felt horrible. But it kind of worked. Really repulsive code often improved in personal time as matter of pride ;-)
SYMANTEC VISION 2014 43 Presentation Identifier Goes Here
Altiris Infrastructure Challenge
Challenge
No time/funds for 7.5 infrastructure. Performance issues known.
Solution Simplest answer to use development SMP 7.1 virtual server Development SMP7.1 upgraded to 7.5 and promoted to production use,
• Virtualised (with already off-box Virtual SQL) • No site servers
DS6.9SP6 scripts to unschedule jobs and kill idle consoles.
Assessment • Upgrade successful! • Minor Issue with certificates. Resolved by using a public cert (cheap for us). • SMP7.5 lower with resource consumption than feared
SYMANTEC VISION 2014 44 Presentation Identifier Goes Here
Deployment Challenge
Challenge
Migrate 10 machines simultaneously with an average migration time of ~1hr using a ~12GB image. Minimise network impact even on poor networks.
Solution As site servers not an option, USB sticks to act as alternate image sources only quick solution. Custom Deployment scripts therefore required.
Assessment • Code has high WTF factor, but excellent deployment times • Last minute move required from WinPE3 to WinPE4 imaging for USB3 support
SYMANTEC VISION 2014 45 Presentation Identifier Goes Here
Remediation Challenge
Challenge ‘Win7 Migration’ job is an image deployments with an additional 20+ DS jobs. 1 in 10 machines anticipated to require remediation. IT staff need to know fast if something is wrong.
Solution To simplify remediation, every deployment has ‘Build Monitor’ and ‘Build Report’
Assessment • Techs now quickly know if any component of a build fails • Job can be re-run in DS in a matter of seconds to rectify • Generally around 5% of builds have suffer a job failure • Only 1 in 300 builds fail in a way which requires a full re-deployment
SYMANTEC VISION 2014 46 Presentation Identifier Goes Here
Software Challenge
Challenge
No time to get all software packaged ready for Windows7 go live
Solution • Use existing Altiris inventories to help phase project; leaving machines likely to give issue to the later phases • Hire an extra software packager. Quick. • Create self-install service for Windows 7 with low WTF factor. As project progresses, publish software to user self-install • Install software manually where required.
Assessment •Great success. Users understanding of project constraints and love self-install.
SYMANTEC VISION 2014 47 Presentation Identifier Goes Here
The Hardware Challenge
Challenge
~50 models supported. No time/funds to ratify HII image against all hardware
Solution • Ratified 50% of models. Starting with most prolific first. • Rest of hardware simply replaced
Assessment • Users happy for old hardware to be replaced. • Reducing pool automatically provided opportunity to eliminate troublesome models • Overall Cost/Speed benefit
