WWII Australian Internment Camps Following the evacuation of Dunkirk, British authorities becameparanoid about the possibilities of spies on homesoil. In July1940, thousands of these unfortunate men were shipped toAustralia aboard the ship Dunera. The ship unloaded it human cargoin Sydney where they werebundled into a train for the 30hour trip to Hay.
As Australian currency was forbidden in the Hay InternmentCamp the ingenious internees designed their own currency whichwas printed by the local newspaper the Riverine Grazier. Notesin the denominations Sixpence, Shilling and Two Shillings wereproduced from designs prepared by Georg Telscher, who hadcontributed to Austrian note designs in the 1930's.
The cunning designs incorporated a number of hidden messages. In the barbed wire around the edge of the note can be read "Weare here because we are here". In the barbed wire at the foot ofthe fencing can be read "HMT (His Majesty's Troop Ship)Dunera, Liverpool to Hay". Woven into the fleece of the sheepon the back of the note are the names of some of the internees. Ithas also been suggested that the barbed wire behind the Coat ofArms hides a message in morse code!
The notes only circulated for about three months in 1941 beforethey were withdrawn and destroyed (later being replaced by thepopular Government issued internment tokens). The onlysurviving examples are those souvenired by the internees andcamp administration.
Robinow-Stahl 6 PenceThe rarest signature combination for the Sixpence. From the family of a “Dunera Boy”.

Henry III was born in 1207 at Winchester Castle. He was theson of King John and Isabella of Angoulême. After his father'sdeath in 1216, Henry, who was nine at the time, was hastilycrowned in Gloucester Cathedral; he was the first child monarchsince the Norman invasion of England in 1066.
Under John's rule, the barons had supported an invasion byPrince Louis of France because they disliked the way that Johnhad ruled the country. However, they quickly saw that the youngprince was a safer option. Henry'sregents immediately declaredtheir intention to rule byMagna Carta, which theyproceeded to do duringHenry’s minority. MagnaCarta was reissued in1217 as a sign ofgoodwill to the baronsand the country wasruled by regents until
1227. England prospered during his century and his greatestmonument is Westminster, which he made the seat of hisgovernment and where he expanded the abbey as a shrine to
Edward the Confessor.
The only coins of Henry’s long reign were theSilver Penny and its cut fractions. The obverseshows a portrait of Henry and the reverseshows a cross and the moneyer and mint
name. The cross on the reverse not only hadreligious significance but it was designed to prevent
clipping and facilitate the cutting of Pennies intohalf and quarters.
