It's fairly easy to spot in the despondency of social media and the 24/7 cycle of the bad news networks that are so abundant today. But the Christian faith has a good news response and Easter changed everything. As an Easter believer and to quote an old poem, I'm drinking from the saucer because my cup runneth over.In the gospel exchanges of what happened in the post resurrection appearances there is no shortage of divine appeals such as Do not be afraidand Peace be with you. Before ascending into heaven Jesus, as portrayed by the gospel writers, seems intent on the reassurance of the Holy Spirit who would oversee the establishment of His church. I find every reason to be upbeat, enthused and positive given these teachings. This past week in John's gospel (20:22) Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. In the reading from Luke this week 24:49 he tells those same disciples to stay in the city until they are clothed with power from on high, indicating the Spirit was yet to come. Matthew mentions the Holy Spirit in context to the great commis- sion” (28:19) Mark, ever the brief one, implies but does not mention the Holy Spirit in the post resurrection narratives. Rather, he offers a listing of signswhich amount to the types of things the disciples will be able to accomplish in the name of Jesus. (16:16) As a professor of New Testament studies once shared with me, the facts don't always line up, but that the truth always prevails. Each Gospel writer had a different perspective, different audience, and different words to convey the mysteries of God. Some of their chronologies read with slight differences but this does not discount their truth. One of our lectionary readings for this week is Acts 4:5-12. I encourage you to read it and the contextual scriptures surrounding that reading. Here, Peter is filled with the Holy Spirit and even though his words are from the 1 st century it is hard not to catch his enthusiasm as he states, For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.I'm certain this is the same fervor we should enthusiastically convey. And so I end this column with a question. How do you convey your enthusiasm for the Lord? Blessings, Rick BAPTISM CLASS Please contact Rev. Irwin if your child has expressed an interest in baptism. We are ready and willing to convene a class to prepare our young people in their decisions.

PASTOR’S PEN

Last week I briefly mentioned the cynicism of the world. It's fairly easy to spot in the despondency of social media and the 24/7 cycle of the bad news networks that are so abundant today. But the Christian faith has a good news response and Easter changed everything. As an Easter believer and to quote an old poem, “I'm drinking from the saucer because my cup runneth over.” In the gospel exchanges of what happened in the post resurrection appearances there is no shortage of divine appeals such as “Do not be afraid” and “Peace be with you.” Before ascending into heaven Jesus, as portrayed by the gospel writers, seems intent on the reassurance of the Holy Spirit who would oversee the establishment of His church.
