P R O G R A M M E WEEK END 1: 15,16, 17 MARCH 2013

BEETHOVEN PORTRAIT Beethoven: The most modern Romantic. This series of nine concerts spread over two weekends covers all of Ludwig van Beethoven’s violin sonatas, cello sonatas and piano trios. The full meaning of this intense, passionate music becomes all the more evident when heard in sequence, like turning the pages of a diary written by the most modern of the Romantics. TEDI PAPAVRAMI, violin / XAVIER PHILLIPS, cello / FRANCOIS-FREDERIC GUY, piano Cello and Piano sonatas (Op. 5 n°1, Op. 5 n°2, Op. 66 & Op. 69) Violin and Piano sonatas (Op. 24, Op. 23, Op. 12 n°1, n°2 & n°3) Violin, Cello and Piano trios (Op. 1 n° 1, 2 & 3, Op. 11, Op. 70 n°1, Op. 11, Wo0 38 & 39, Op posth 154) WEEK END 2: 22, 23, 24 MARCH 2013

BARTÓK QUARTET EVENINGS Béla Bartók successfully summed up 20th century modernity in six works. This weekend pays tribute to his visionary inspiration, with his complete works for a string quartet performed by four outstanding quartets: Arditti, Parker, Ardeo and Anima. Works by two contemporary French composers, Philippe Manoury and Laurent Cuniot, will also feature alongside Bartók’s monumental pieces. QUARTETS: ARDITTI, PARKER, ARDEO, ANIMA; Christophe Desjardins, Viola, Eric-Maria Couturier, Cello Bartók: Quartets n°1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 Creations by Philippe Manoury “Melencolia”, and by Laurent Cuniot “Villa Adriano” (String sextet)

A SURPRISING MUSICAL TRIP… The destination is kept secret, the programme of the musical evening too, the meeting point is the only thing you will know before departure. But one thing is sure: don’t miss the surprising musical trip, a touch of adventure “made in” the Printemps des Arts Festival and a unique concept which has already been very successful in the past! WEEK END 3: 28, 29, 30, 31 MARCH and 1 APRIL 2013

BARTÓK AND THE VIOLIN Although himself a pianist, Béla Bartók contributed several masterpieces to the string instrument repertoire. In addition to his six string quartets, he also composed beautiful sheets of violin music, from the Sonata for solo violin to two Concertos for violin and orchestra. This programme presents his two Sonatas for violin and piano and his renowned Romanian Folk Dances. HÉLÈNE TYSMAN, piano and SATÉNIK KHOURDOÏAN, violin

BARTÓK, PRINCE OF THE ORCHESTRA Two works suffice to demonstrate why Béla Bartók was one of the 20th century’s finest orchestrators. Bartók’s two masterpieces, Piano Concerto no3 and The Wooden Prince, are performed by the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra under German conductor Karl-Heinz Steffens. MONTE-CARLO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, conducted by KARL-HEINZ STEFFENS ELENA BASHKIROVA, piano / The Wooden Prince; Piano Concerto n°3

TRADITIONAL KHMER MUSIC A string and percussion instrumental and vocal concert, a tradition which has been resuscitated from the Khmer Rouge extermination campaign. “Pinpeat” (popular music), “Mohori” (royal court music), Phleng Kar (wedding music) and Arak (ritual music) have since then been revived thanks to exceptional performers such as Master KONG NAY, a unique “luth chapey” virtuoso : do not miss this guest artist of note ! KONG NAY, luth chapey / 7 musicians & 4 singers

ROYAL BALLET OF CAMBODIA The Cambodian Royal Ballet has been proclaimed part of UNESCO’s oral and intangible heritage of humanity. The Khmer Rouge policy of systematically executing every dance master and musician would have rendered this royal tradition extinct if not for the royal family’s determination to resuscitate the troop after 1979. Today, it has recovered its former glory under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Norodom Bhuppa Devi, author of most of the original choreographies. With unforgettable splendour and finesse, 23 apsara dancers and 10 musicians make their stage debut in Monaco. Royal Ballet of Cambodia, choreographies by H.R.H. the Princess Norodom Buppha Devi, Proeung Chieng and Soth Somaly WEEK END 4: 4, 5, 6, 7 APRIL 2013

STRAVINSKY AND THE BALLETS RUSSES The appearance in Monaco of the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and its permanent conductor, the great Valery Gergiev, is a unique event, especially as the entire world is celebrating the centenary of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring in 2013. ORCHESTRA OF THE MARIINSKY THEATER, conducted by VALERY GERGIEV : L’Oiseau de feu, Petrouchka, Le Sacre du Printemps VERA NOVAKOVA, violin and MAKI BELKIN, piano: Duo concertant, Suite italienne, Divertimento

THE CONGO EVENT IN MONACO ! Established in 1994 with 31 musicians, Kinshasa’s Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste is the only symphony orchestra in Central Africa. Its history is unique, as is its presence in Monaco, where audiences can discover a new and very liberal approach to a symphony orchestra. As the orchestra’s notoriety grows, participating in the Printemps des Arts marks a new step in the musicians’ careers. KIMBANGUIST SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA, conducted by Armand Wabasolele Diangienda Strauss: Beau Danube Bleu Bizet: L’Arlésienne (excerpts 1, 2 & 4) Brahms: Danse Hongroise n°5 Mayimbi & Balongi: Symphonie Tata Kimbangu On stage as well, 4 troops of musicians and dancers: Folk-dance troops: SUPER MBONDA and TRADI MODERNE Ballet companies: BALLET KIESSE NA KIESSE and BALLET JEUNESSE DE L’AN 2000

DEGENERATE MUSIC This expression is as strange as it is shameful. In 1938, the Nazi regime outlawed Jewish and avant-garde composers from German society, labelling them “degenerate musicians”. In the post-war years these same Jewish composers’ works were shunned as an unwelcome reminder of the Holocaust and were not performed. This concert pays tribute to those musicians who were either avant-garde, censored, exiled or members of the resistance. MONTE-CARLO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, conducted by LAWRENCE FOSTER FRANK PETER ZIMMERMANN, violin MERVON MEHTA, narrator MALE CHOIR OF THE MONTE-CARLO OPERA - Schoenberg: Le Survivant de Varsovie - Hindemith: Concerto pour violon - Schreker: Ouverture fantastique - Weill: Symphonie n°2 WEEK END 5: 12, 13, 14 APRIL 2013

BÉLA BARTÓK THE EXPRESSIONNIST Providing the finishing touch to this portrait of Béla Bartók, this is one of his most ambitious works. The Miraculous Mandarin, based on a Chinese fairytale, premiered at the Cologne Opera House on November 27th 1926, causing such a scandal that the show was closed down and the work banned by the Hungarian authorities. NICE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, conducted by PHILIPPE AUGUIN CHOIR OF THE NICE OPERA - Four Orchestra pieces, Op. 12 - Le Mandarin Merveilleux

CONGO (week-end 4) KIMBANGUIST SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA, the story… Formed fifteen years ago by a few dozen music-loving amateurs who shared the few instruments they had at their disposal. Rehearsals were organised in shifts so that everyone could have a turn. Today the « Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste » include 200 musicians ! Most of them are still self-taught amateurs. Even for those fortunate enough to have trained for a profession and found a halfway regular job, everyday life in the metropolis of Kinshasa with its eight million citizens is a constant struggle for survival. For many the working day begins at 6 in the morning, frequently a great deal earlier for the ones who cannot afford to share a taxi and have to walk miles to get to their workplaces. Despite this they attend the rehearsals that go on until well into the night, practically every day. A staggering example of discipline and enthusiasm. In the meantime some of the orchestra’s repair artists have a whole collection of self-devised and self-built tools that they need to mend instruments. Their methods are as unorthodox as they are effective. Other members of the orchestra make their concert attire themselves, procure the sheet music required and make sure that the children are fed and looked after during the long evening rehearsals. www.kinshasa-symphony.com ARMAND WABASOLELE DIANGIENDA Founder and conductor of the « Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste ». Grandson of Simon Kimbangu, a martyr greatly revered in the Congo for opposing the Belgian colonists and establishing his own church: the Kimbanguists. Cellist and composer: “Music often helps me to think straight and plan my life” he says. “And even though the rehearsals are often uphill work with little immediately appreciable progress, making music together is a compensation for lots of problems ». www.kinshasa-symphony.com / www.oskimbangu.org SUPER MBONDA FOLK-DANCE TROOP www.printempsdesarts.mc (press book) BALLET KIESSE NA KIESSE Formed in 2000 in Kinshasa by Deps Anakasala Mowaka. About « Tradi-Modern » : an electrified version of traditional Congolese trance music. The Tradi-Modern scene developed in Kinshasa, among musicians born outside the capital, who used self-made amplification to make the traditional music of their home regions heard in the noisy city. Although the scene can be traced back to the 1970s, few recordings of Tradi-Modern music were available before 2005, when the Belgian label Crammed Discs launched the Congotronics series of Tradi-Modern albums and compilations. The first album in the series was Congotronics by veteran group Konono N°1. www.rateyourmusic.com

The strength of a family-owned, independent art-loving patron!

"Year II" of the sponsorship of exceptional events that unites the family-run, independent Banque Martin Maurel Sella and the Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo (Monte-Carlo Spring Arts Festival) marks the international expansion of this Monegasque cultural and musical festival.

For "Year II" of its active association with the Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo, Martin Maurel Sella is delighted and honoured to support the Festival's international expansion. The Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo will present a concert in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, from 7th to 10th June 2013, as part of the links between these two countries. This has been made possible under the aegis of Martin Maurel Sella and will involve key local players, such as Rawbank. It follows on from "Congo Day," with the Kinshasa Symphony Orchestra, on Saturday 6th April 2013 in the Rainier III Auditorium.

The concert in Kinshasa will take place in the presence of H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, President of the Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo. "This event symbolises the quality of the bank's relations, particularly in French-speaking Africa," stated Managing Director Frédéric C. Geerts.

Martin Maurel Sella wishes the 2013 Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo every success, as a prelude to the eagerly awaited "fireworks" that will celebrate the Festival's 30th anniversary in 2014!
