Local jazz band hits the road

The Waimea College Jazz Band featuring members; Martin Emo (director), James Vanner, Ryan Morris, Matthew Hammond, Sam Hitchens, Peter Thomson, Pip West, Simon Parkes and Patrick West will compete at the New Zealand Festival of Jazz in Wellington. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The Waimea College Jazz Band will be hoping to undo the saying ‘saving the best until last’ when it opens the New Zealand Festival of Jazz in Wel-lington this week. This is the first time Waimea College is sending a band to what is arguably the biggest secondary school jazz event in the country. The festival will feature hundreds of performances around the capital as well as a com-petition amongst all of the acts. Stu-dents will also take part in a number of workshops. The Waimea College Jazz Band con-sists of eight members, James Van-ner (drums), Ryan Morris (piano), Matthew Hammond (guitar), Sam

Hitchens (trombone), Peter Thom-son (guitar), Pip West (alto sax), Si-mon Parkes (bass), and Patrick West (alto and soprano sax). Despite an unknown element to the festival, band director Martin Emo expects it be of a very high standard. “There’s people coming all the way from the Bay of Islands and from ar-eas where jazz has traditionally been strong. Some have been cleaning up at Tauranga and Manawatu jazz fes-tivals for years and years,” he says. “Jazz hasn’t been a big thing here, it has existed and there’s been combos, but it’s just giving them a challenge.”Waimea College will also enter a senior jazz trio in the competition.

Patrick Connolly-Baker, Richmond.

“Yeah of course. There’s no bus route from my house to work so I’m stuck under my own transport.”

Michelle Melnik, Richmond.

“I walk or drive the car. I just do whatever has to happen.”

Donna Neame, Richmond.

“I think I definitely would if it wasn’t time consuming. I work as a merchandiser so you gotta be all around town. If the op-tion was there then definitely.”

Margaret Butt, Richmond.

“Time comes into it mostly. I drive because of mobility problems. I used to walk be-cause I enjoyed it.”

Five well known locals raced from Richmond to Nelson in the most eco-friendly way possible. Would you take the most eco-friendly form of transport if it was an option?

Mall ranks in top 3A national review has ranked the Richmond Mall as the third-equal best shopping centre of its size in the country. The review was the third conducted by retail planning, interior, design architecture and prop-erty management company RCG since 2008 but the first featuring the Richmond Mall amongst its top 32 shopping centres. The review marked the Richmond Mall with a score of 61 out of 100, equal with Centre Place in Hamilton and below overall winner The Hub Hornby in Christchurch and runner-up Shore City in Northern Auckland in the ‘Middleweight Shopping Centre’ category. Middleweight classed those that fell between neighbourhood and re-

gional centres.RCG stated that the Richmond Mall “hits above its weight and should really be thought of as a good quality medium-sized centre”, also going on to say “the centre is very popular with locals and it integrates well with the street retail”.Richmond Mall manager David Hill was happy with the results. “We’re absolutely thrilled to bits. It’s good recognition of the hard work that the owners have put into the place,” he says. “It’s a good reflection for the tenants as well.”Richmond Mall placed higher than Wellington’s Johnsonville Shopping Centre, Dunedin’s Merid-ian Mall and Christchurch’s Eastgate Shopping Centre, amongst others.

Manager David Hill was thrilled to hear the Richmond Mall had ranked third-equal in a national review conducted on the top 32 shopping centres in the country. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

NEW PATIENTS WELCOME

A transition market for students with a disability will be held at Waimea College next Wednesday. The transition market gives each student and their parents a chance to scope out different services that will benefit them once they have left school. Those services include anything from booking a taxi, housing arrangements and rent to finding out where they can join a basketball team.

The day is a first for the school and will be attended by secondary schools from all over the Nelson and Marlborough regions. Waimea College special education stu-dents Tim Russell, Danyon Bevan, Alice Robb, Saff Michelle and Luke Blanken (pictured above) will attend a transition market day at the school next Wednesday as they weigh up their options after school. Fines for bad firesTasman District Council is ensuring “good practice” of outdoor fires continues, threaten-ing those who don’t comply with an instant $300 fine.TDC’s compliance team says it fields regular complaints about excessively smokey fires in the Waimea area, 152 of those complaints coming in the past 12 months alone. Use of fire to manage vegetation waste is com-mon practice throughout the region and occurs on all types of properties, except for in the urban areas of Richmond and Motueka where such ac-tivity is strictly prohibited. The council say excessively smokey fires can cause problems for neighbours, both in terms of nuisance and aggravating any respiratory condi-

tions some people may have. Particulates from the fires, commonly assessed as PM10 or PM2.5, are associated with increased premature mortality, and exacerbate a number of respiratory and cardiac problems. The council says that smoke also causes irrita-tion in eyes and is unpleasant to breathe in. Smoke can also cause washing hung outside to smell. They are for offences against Section 15 (2A) of the Resource Management Act 1991 – Discharge of Contaminant into air. This comes on the back of the council threat-ening to issue fines for people caught dumping rubbish around rivers and on council-managed land.

National skydivers descend on Tasman

Grant Pound and Richmond’s David Sherriff will be two of more than 150 skydivers taking part in the Good Vibes festival in Motueka.

The skies of Motueka and the Moutere will be filled with hundreds of sports skydivers this week with an estimated 150 thrill-seekers lining up for the Good Vibes skydiving festival. The event is the largest of its kind in the country and is hosted by Skydive Abel Tasman in Mo-tueka.Spectators are welcome on all of the days lead-ing up until the event’s conclusion on Sunday August 19. For further details, phone 0800 422 899.

Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio, Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne, National MP Nick Smith, Green MP Mike Ward and Vil-lage Cycles owner Jim Matthews competed in an eco challenge on Mon-day morning. Photo: Andrew Board.

Nick too quickThe victor was probably under little threat, but the chasing pack wasn’t too far behind. MP Nick Smith, driving his eco-friendly car, won the “race to work” against fellow politicians and businessman Jim Matthews on Monday morning, an event to help promote this weekend’s Ecofest.Nick took 15 and a half minutes to get from Sun-dial Square in Richmond to 1903 Square in Nelson with Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne in second place on his electric bike. Jim Matthews finished third on his road bike and Mike Ward riding his recumbent bike was in fourth.Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio was last after he took

the Nbus and then a Segway to the square but he says he had the most “time effective” trip, able to read the morning paper, clear emails and drink a coffee on the way.Organiser Jo Reilly says the race was a way to en-courage people to think about the different ways they can travel to work each morning and was part of the theme of this year’s Ecofest. Richard, on his electric bike, hit a top speed of 46 kilometres per hour, just eight kilometres per hour ahead of Jim. Richard’s average speed was 27km/h.Mike not only rode back from Richmond but rode out there before the challenge as well.

Richmond Volunteer Fire ServiceLast week we looked back at the number of nota-ble fires in the Richmond area. The first recorded loss was that of a surveyor’s home, the first erect-ed on the Waimea plain. The cause of fire is un-known. This week we touch on the formation of Richmond’s first fire brigade.

The following is a copy of the first min-utes of the Richmond Fire Brigade’s formation meeting in 1878.Mr J M Croucher, who was voted the chair, called on Mr E Fairey to state the object of the meeting. Mr Fairey replied that the object of the meeting was to take in to consideration the for-mation of a volunteer fire brigade in Richmond. He had already collected 25 names of local residents willing to join and he had no doubt that many more would join once the brigade had been formed. Mr C Webb stated to the meeting that he had held conversations with Mr AW Leaife, the sec-retary of insurance companies in Nelson, and Mr Leaife had promised to do all that lay in his power to get the insurance companies to provide the brigade, when organised with a fire engine and other necessary appliances. But Mr Leaife stated it would be not of any use for one or two per-sons to apply for all engines. The only course that would be likely to be successful, would be them to form into a brigade themselves and then apply for what they wanted as an organised body.Mr L Edwards was also present during the conversation and en-dorsed Mr Leafie’s remarks with reference to the likelihood of the success if they had applied as an organised brigade.Mr C Webb also stated to the meeting that captain Lightfoot of the Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade had stated his willingness to come to Richmond and bring some of his company to instruct us how to use a fire engine.Mr Ashcroft had also kindly offered to lay on a special train from Nelson to Richmond to con-vey captain Lightfoot and his men with their en-

gine and appliance to Richmond any Friday that would be convenient to all parties. The chairman read and confirmed the rules of the Nelson Vol-unteer Fire Brigade that he thought would be of importance to us.The next meeting was the election of offices, with the following results; Captain, Mr D Gap-

per; Lieutenant, Mr E Fairey; Foreman of the Hook & Ladder Co, Mr MW Lammas; Foreman of the No 1 Hose Co, Mr H Webb; Foreman of the Fire Co, Mr TJ Gibson; secretary, Mr GB Hurst; treasurer, Mr JM Croucher. It was also resolved that the name of the brigade be Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade. On the motion of Mr Fairey seconded by Mr Croucher that captain Lightfoot be invited to come to Richmond with

his men on Friday next, 23 August if convenient to him. It was further resolved that Mr MW Lammas and Mr WD Harkness be appointed to canvas the district for subscriptions for the brigade.Agreement was reached that this meeting ad-journ until Thursday 22 August.Six new members enrolled before the meeting

closed, making a total of 31. All paid one shil-ling being one months subscription dating from August 1 1878.The first real home for the brigade was where Espresso Café and Green Door Real Estate are today in Lower Queen St until 1982 when the shift was made to Oxford St where the brigade remains today.

With candles glowing around the house on these wintery evenings and the smell of a delicious tagine slow cooking in the oven, I have decided a small amount of retail therapy in Living and Giving is what I need. With 20% - 40% off everything in store, I am able to stock up on my Ecoya diffusers. My favourite is the Vanilla Bean and also the Ecoya candles. These candles are remarkable and with a burn time of 50 hours. Made from soy wax, you can actually use the warm wax as a hand lotion, and the scent is divine. On the way to work I love my Bodum travel coffee mug, which is not only perfect for a morning fix of coffee but I do find that I have to be in quick otherwise one of my teenagers fills it with hot chocolate for their walk to school. So maybe I will add a couple of these to my shopping basket.Spend some time looking at the many cookbooks and gain inspiration for some baking, cooking, grilling and search the shelves for those little extras that look so delightful in your kitchen. The team are outstanding with their free gift wrapping, so a present for a friend is on my list.Don’t forget free car parking on Tuesdays. I look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island.

LETTERSTO THE EDITORI am so glad that Trevor Higgs, a recent user of the new cycle bridge, has highlighted the diffi-culty of getting on and off it. I have used it and feel the same. It is most awkward, even if you are walking up or down it as Stuart Hughes is adamant that people should do.Users really should be able to cycle on and off it. The Otago Rail Trail has many bridges and I cannot recall having to walk over any of them. What about parents pushing pushchairs or baby seats on the back of bikes, it must be difficult for these people as well? It’s a shame as otherwise it’s a great part of the cycle way.I hope Trevor is fully recovered from his fall and wish him well. I look forward to seeing the planned improve-ments that the council are proposing.

School fizzing for fairAppleby School children are brewing their own fizzy drinks as part of a competition being run in conjunction with the school’s annual fair. The fair will be held on September 1 and is run by the Friends of Appleby School organising commit-tee.Janey Clark, competition co-ordinator, says the idea for the children’s fizzy drink competition was sparked by the parents’ home-brew competition, which is run alternate years. “It’s something a bit different to the usual children’s competitions,” she says. With two weeks for the fizzy drinks to ferment, many children are well underway, making their competition entries at home. Janey says the chil-

dren are getting creative with their brews, making ginger beer, lemonade, strawberry-flavoured and even chocolate-flavoured fizz.Although apparently temptation is too much for some children, who are having to re-make their competition entries after consuming their first batch.Other contests include the parents Cafe Cake com-petition, the Grandparents bake-off and the chil-dren’s baking competition. Entries are judged on the day preceding the fair. All baking is then sold on the day, though the children’s fizzy will be dis-played rather than available for purchase. The fair runs from 11am until 2pm with parking provided in neighbouring paddocks.

Appleby School students Brodie Clark, Brandon and Judah Ashton, Oli Clark, Olivia Ashton and Milly Clark show off the home made fizzy drinks made for a competition at the upcoming school fair. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Colin Bowden After three days of intense competi-tion, the outstanding Dunedin pairing of Alan Gill and Garry Hale once again took away the title from the Clubs NZ South Island Snooker Pairs Tourna-ment at Club Waimea last week. Their domination is shown by the fact that this was their tenth championship in eighteen years, and their fifth in succes-sion. Although the field for the tourna-ment, now iin its 36 year, was one of the strongest in two decades, Gill and Hale went through the contest with the loss of only a single game. Runners up were Papanui No. 1 team, Brent Jones, him-self a winner on five previous occasions, and Brian Dunn, who managed to take one frame in the best of five final. Garry

Hale also took out the prize for high-est break during the tournament, with a well constructed 79 in the first frame of the final.Local teams, consisting of nine from Club Waimea and two each from City Club Nelson and the Nelson Subruban Club, strived valiantly against much more experienced players and all came away with at least one memorable victo-ry over higher-ranked sides. Last year’s surprise finalists Gary Calderbank and lorne Wells, representing the Suburban Club, nearly matched that achievement as they reached the semi-finals before losing out to jones and Dunn. The best performing of the Waimea teams was Geoff Nieman and Peret Phipps, who fought through to the quarter-finals of

the championship before going down two frames to one to a pairing from the Richmond Club in Christchurch. Others to exceed their expectations (and rankings) were Barry Weavers and Brian Comer, who reached the semi-fi-nals in the flight event, Clare and Mike Shanaher who reached the last four in the Special Flight, and Frank Wood-house and Burt Gary who won the plate contest – but only by defeating fellow Waimea players, Julie Dalton and Susie Hopwood.Considerable praise has been heaped on the Club Waimea Snooker Section for their organisation and geniality, ac-colades which are also befitting the staff and members who made the visitors so welcome.

Welcome to our August Newsletter,Hope you are all keeping dry and warm in what seems to be a very wet month. We are all hoping that the sun will shine through for more than one day at a time very soon. There are plenty of ills and chills around at the moment so take care of yourselves. We celebrated the unveiling of our Mural recently. After a busy time get-ting it all organised, we have had some very favourable comments about it and hope you can all go and have a firsthand look at it, if it stops raining long enough. It was great that we could involve Pinegrove Kindergarten and Brightwater School in this event. The BMX track is in the process of be-ing finished off, still a little bit of work to be done which is being organised.Have you had the chance to go and cycle or walk over the Wairoa cycle bridge? There are lots of extra cycles visiting the village. It is so good to see people using this wonderful asset and it is good for our local businesses too. The next stage of the cycle trail is un-derway and Wakefield will be celebrat-ing their opening at the end of Octo-ber. Someone mentioned at a recent

meeting that we are lucky in Brightwa-ter - we can cycle in to Richmond and Nelson or cycle to Wakefield when the trail is complete. Some good news is that the wash out that occurred on the Two Rivers Walk-way has been repaired and looks good. Many local people use this walkway and it is great that repairs have been completed. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 4 September, 7.30pm at the Brightwater School Staffroom. We have the Mayor, Richard Kempthorne, visiting us for this meeting so if you have any burn-ing questions you want to put to him please come along and do so, everyone is welcome.See you there, Your Community Association

Brightwater MuralThe idea for the mural came from Pamela and Cliff Sirett, who thought the Pinegrove Kindergarten children would enjoy looking at a colour-ful mural rather than a grey concrete wall. Pamela belongs to the Bright-water Community Association and asked if we could turn the wall into a

mural. Dale and Christine Ewers kindly gave permission for us to put the mural on the wall. The first thing to happen was for the wall to be thor-oughly cleaned, and Hotwash Waterblasting of Brightwater stepped up and kindly cleaned the wall at no charge. We ap-plied for and were successful in receiving funds from Creative New Zealand through the Tas-man District Council. Lucky for our Community, artist Marie Greeks moved in to our neighbourhood and agreed to put together our picture for the mural depicting Early Brightwater buildings and icons. She spent much time getting this just right and fi-nally everything was set to go. Pauline Coy, also a member of the Brightwater Community Association, organised all the details, from brushes, rollers, painters and helpers. There was great support from Resene

Paints of Richmond, Charlie Harwood Builders who kindly donated the use of a huge scissor lift that allowed Marie and Pauline to paint the top part of the mural. Marie and Pauline had many helpers to paint the mural, Maries’ sis-ter Pamela Hill, some keen Pinegrove Kindergarten children, some children from Brightwater School, Diane from Wanderers Rugby Football Club and members of the Waimea Anglican Church. Finally earlier this year the mural was completed. HiReach kindly donated the use of a smaller scissor lift for Hamish and Tracey to put on the anti-graffitti coating. Finally Afford-able Sign & Graphics gave us an excel-lent deal on the signage to complete the Mural. We would like to thank each and every person, who has helped in any way with the mural, and we apol-ogise if there is anyone we forgot to mention. The whole process has taken approximately 4 years but we think we can be very proud of the finished mural – good things do take time. We hope everyone enjoys the mural and takes the time to go and have a look at it. We would like to thank everyone too, who came to the unveiling. A special thanks to the Pinegrove Kindergarten teachers and children, the Brightwa-ter School Choir, and the Brightwater School Kapa Haka group for making our unveiling such a special occasion. Thanks to Wanderers Rugby Football Club for being the venue for our get to-gether after the unveiling.

Letter to our Brightwater CommunityWe have in the midst of our Com-munity a resident who loves to get out there and keep our village and surrounding areas looking neat and tidy and cared for. This person is Mr Potter. We would like to take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to him. Did you all notice that a few days before the Cycle Trail opening, Mr Potter kindly tidied up the area at the shops by cleaning all the weeds that had started to grow around the bollards there? It cer-tainly looked lovely after he had fin-ished. Mr Potter has also been busy planting down at the entrance way to the Two Rivers Walkway and he regularly keeps the street edges tidy. We sincerely appreciate the time and effort he puts in to his community, we all benefit from his work. Thank you, Mr Potter. We would also like to thank every-

one who had any part in helping out at the Cycle Trail opening. Having so many people involved with the many jobs helped make this event a great success.Likewise with the Mural unveiling, we would like to thank everyone who helped out with this commu-nity event. All sectors in our com-munity where involved and I would like to make a special thank you to Jacqui and Wendy who did the ca-tering for this event. The food was delicious and was appreciated by all who enjoyed it.We would like to publicly thank the Board of the Brightwater School for being so supportive of our Commu-nity Association, we are so pleased to be able to hold our monthly meet-ings there. Thanks everyoneBrightwater Community Association Inc.

Gardens & LandscapingWelcome to our last official month of winter. It does feel as if we have come out of the freezer just to fall into a lake with such a wet start to the spring. I am sure that all of the Nelson residents must all be suffering from Vitamin D deficiency after a string of gloomy, grey and overcast days. I know I am seriously starting to crave sunshine, so it was with great delight that I shook the moths from the 3/4 pants, donned a t-shirt and runners as Cruse and I took off to

Tahuna beach this morning. It was re-ally amazing – lots of sun, no wind and many others with their dog friends do-ing the same thing. It looks great with the snow still on the mountains, looking across the sea with clear blue sky above. It is very easy to look at the garden through the rain on a dull day and not see much happening, so I tested this out last week and was very happy and pleased to see so much suddenly bloom-ing. Amongst other things the stand

outs are my reticulata ca-mellia – a gorgeous pink, and many other camellias ranging from red to white, the hellebores or “winter roses” in shades from deep red to white and lime green, the gold leucadendron and escallonia “gold brian” with fabulous gold foliage at this time of year. Mixed in with these are of course the daffo-dils, narcissus, jonquils and irises, polyanthus, primulas and pansies that are now starting to move and pro-vide colour spots. It seems to be a good season for the daphne’s also with leucanthe and alba both flowering well in my fragrant garden. Also the plants of sarcococca rus-cifolia that went into this area three years ago are now providing a beautiful fra-grance. These love the dry shade area but do not seem to have suffered at all with the extra rain. Magnolia

“vulcan” is also starting to flower and looks rather magnificent. It is now time to clean out your seed trays and start thinking about summer seed sowing. If, like me, you have pack-ets of old seed piling up, you can still use them providing they have been kept dry, well past the use by date on the packet. There was great excitement in the pot-ting shed last weekend as I uncovered a small jar of Beryl’s beans. I spoke of her tomatoes, which I will be growing again this year, but thought I had come to the end of her delicious dwarf green beans. Beryl seemed to be able to grow these beans and have them on the table from October until May. She kept her family supplied with both fresh beans and seed and ate beans every day for many months. Considering she was 97, blind and quite deaf, she knew which ones to pick and when and which rows she would leave for seed – the green veg-etable bug seemed to miraculously leave Beryl and her garden alone. None of the family can remember which type of beans they were and I am so pleased to have found ten seeds, which I will plant in September.TIPS• Make a list of the seeds you want to grow and start sourcing them now. Kings seeds have a beaut catalogue or go “on line”.• If you haven’t planted your strawber-ries yet it is OK – garden centres will have plants already in flower so keep an eye out for these.• Plant brassica’s now – cabbage, cauli, bok choy, broccoli etc to give them a good start prior to the onset of the

Page 17: 15 August 2012

dreaded white butterfly in late spring.• You can still plant broad beans, sow snow peas, cos let-tuce and radish, for a good start to summer salad days.• Get out the snail bait – the cold weather does not seem to deter these guys and they will find your seedlings if you don’t get them first. • Check your roses for white scale – if found, rub it off with a stiff brush and then spray with neem or conquer-or oil.• After so much rain it is a good idea to check around your trees and shrubs to see that the soil or bark mulch has not built up or been washed close to the base of the plants. Collar rot sets in very quickly in these cold damp con-ditions so ensure that air gets to the base of all your treasures. • Keep weeding – they come out very easily after rain and also keep weeds away from the base of your trees to help prevent the onset of any collar rot as above.Give yourself a lift and buy a boro-nia. Pop one in a pot by the door for a lovely fragrant entrance – they are in the garden centres now. Boronia megastigma has the best perfume – I tend to treat these like an annual and they are cheap enough to love the fragrance without beating yourself up over trying to keep them growing. Be patient this month – it is usually the wettest and can be the coldest so don’t expect new plants to do much – liquid feeding can help, Seasol will strengthen seedlings and give them the best start into spring.Keep smiling and happy gardeningRobyn Hollis

Agriculture New ZealandGardening enthusiasts, growers, lifestyle block owners, professional gardeners, farmers and orchardists of all ages are invited to register for this popular course held here in Nelson and offered in partnership with Telford, a division of Lincoln University. Scheduled to start with an information meeting planned for Thursday 16 August, this 8 month long day course explores the latest trends in sustainable growing. The overall aim is to build ecosystems, promote biodiversity, increase soil and plant health and avoid the use of ar-

tificial fertilisers and sprays. A science-based approach explores a wide range of organic techniques and sys-tems. Topics covered include organic philosophies, cer-tification, soil management, soil food webs, composting, companion planting, vermiculture, organic fertilisers, crop rotation, green manures, weed control, pest and disease management, plant knowledge and an introduc-tion to permaculture. This knowledge can be applied not

only to food crops, but to the culti-vation of any plants – from suburban gardens to pastures, orchards, shelter belts and woodlots.Students meet weekly on a Thurs-day from 9.30am to 3pm during the school term. In ad-dition to attending tutorials and work-shops or fieldtrips, students will need to complete practical and theory assign-ments in their own time to complete the Telford Certificate in Organic Horti-culture (Level 3). Having some prior knowledge of hor-

ticulture and growing plants is recom-mended although keen beginners are invited to apply. Although this pro-gramme has a horticultural bias, pas-toral farmers wishing to gain an under-standing of organic farming will also find this course of value. Networking between organic growing enthusiasts is an added bonus to joining this course. On successful completion of the course you will be awarded a Telford Certifi-cate in Organic Horticulture (Level 3) and a National Certificate in Horti-culture (Level 2). Course Start: Thurs-day 16 August 2012 in Nelson with a two hour information and enrolment meeting starting at 10am. Course Cost $250.00. Wanderers Taylors Steele continued to build on its early season form when it had an impressive outing against Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro Classics on the weekend. Wanderers gained promotion to Grade 4 for the championship round and current-ly lead the table. There was nothing in it after ten minutes of play when Wanderers held a narrow 5–4 lead. Wanderers increased the deficit when the side opened up an 11–7 advantage by half time.Wing attack Nicola Pans made an immediate impact off the bench in the second period. She found her shooters nicely and had superb weight on her pass as she delivered some precision feeds. Nicola came in for praise from coach, Su-zanne Spencer saying that she is without a doubt the big im-prover in the team throughout the business end of the season. Nicola absorbs all the infor-mation she is given, she is dy-namic through court and steps around her opposition with skill.

Richmond may have held some hope of a come-back but it was all Wanderers in the second half.

Wanderers moved up a gear to outscore Richmond 7–4 and 7–1 to come out on the right of the ledger 25–12.Richmond’s wing attack, Pauline Gibson drove well through court while shooter

Shelley Satherley worked hard for every oppor-tunity to convert.Richmond’s offence was smothered by the hard working defensive unit of Jenny Horncastle, An-

ita Holmes and Renee Down-ing. While having a quiet first quarter, wing defence Renee lifted the bar to ignite the defence, she did some great work on the circle edge and although she was “pinged” a bit she more than made up for it with the turnover ball she won.Anita and Jenny were a for-midable duo; they backed up one another and made life pretty difficult for Richmond’s offence. Jane Daubney was a useful link through court, both on offence and defence.

Murchison claim maiden titleMurchison are no longer the bridesmaids of Nelson Bays rugby, securing its first ever Car Company di-vision two title in front of a bumper crowd on Sat-urday.Missed conversions at the death had been Mur-chison’s downfall when the sides met just two weeks ago. However, they were up for the challenge and a dominant performance from the forwards gave the backs plenty of chances to work their magic in the 39-15 victory.Fullback David Gill, who ended up scoring twice in the fixture, crossed over for his first five pointer after just five minutes as the maroon and golds came out all guns blazing, looking to kill the game off early.Wanderers had no answer for the Murchison on-slaught as the side watched Simon Boyer, David Ad-dison, Ben Fishburn and Jack Topping run in early tries. Murchison raced away to a 32-6 half time lead in front of its vocal supporters.Murchison co-coach Mike Huxford went into the

halftime break feeling pretty confident. “Credit to the guys, they started a lot stronger than I thought we would,” he says. “This is the first time this year that the forwards and backs clicked as a unit. We made a few changes in the second half but Wander-ers only wanted to play it in the forwards.”Simon added two second half penalties to seal the win after Ethan Rueben and Tom Stilwell scored for Wanderers. Wanderers fullback Dan Cooper added one conversion and one penalty.Wanderers team manager Kyle Paki Paki says the better team won on the day. “We’re absolutely gutted but they just outplayed us right from the start.”Murchison have often played their best footy in the first half so Kyle was not surprised with the opponent’s hunger in the opening spells. “It was everything we had trained for and had anticipated. We just didn’t fire on the day.” The Wanderers season was still deemed a success, making back to back finals appearances. The club was now looking to build for next season and push some of its division two players onto the top grade.
