Day 1 Bellringer• Which one or more of these is really in the

Bible?

• A quarrelsome wife is as annoying as contant dripping on a rainy day.

• When praises go up, blessings come down• God will never give you more than you can

bear• A dog returns to its vomit as a fool repeats his

Writings of David (ish)• There are two key books in the middle of “the

Book” written by David and his son, Solomon.

• Psalms – these are mostly written by D, they have lots of wisdom in how we are supposed to talk to and interact with God.

• Proverbs – these are written by Solomon, and they are the “wisdom sayings” in the Bible.

Themes in the Psalms• God as Creator, Redeemer, Judge, Refuge• God’s law, wisdom, sovereignty, mercy• Passion (crucifixtion), the church, incarnation• Worship, Thanksgiving, Prayer, Trust

• For each of these, find one example in the Psalms – use the force (or your phone)

Psalms you should know• Psalm 23: The Lord is my Shepherd…even

though I walk through the valley of death• Psalm 40: I waited patiently for the Lord• Psalm 100: Shout for joy to the Lord• Psalm 139: He knows the hair on our head

Language of Proverbs• Remember the three types of writing? Here’s

• Read a few…• Find 5 proverbs (individual verses) that you

think might apply to YOU…NOW…these should be ones that you find applicable to your current stage in life.

Writing/Sharing• As a closing activity, you are going to write a

five line psalm, as well as five lines of proverbs…you will share both at the start of next class.

• The grade will be based on them having a theme and making sense, and being original.

• Though there are these terrible instances of God’s people not doing the right thing, there are some key examples of people doing exactly what God commands of us/them.

• Today we look at Job, Esther, and Hosea

Faith in the Old Testament

• You, in your group, are going to spend 25-30 minutes learning the story of your person. You need to focus on what their life was like before the “trial,” describe the hard time itself, and describe how they were faithful in spite of their circumstance

• You also need one GOOD visual representation of the story

Prophets of the Old Testament World

• It was common for people to use prophets for real information.

• There were about a dozen prophets in the OT, we will study many next class, but today we will focus on Isaiah

Isaiah• Spend ten minutes looking for and recording

information about who Isaiah was. Focus on when/where he lived, who he was, etc.

• We will discuss and then talk about his prophecies.

Day 4 Bellringer• What were the two purposes of the prophets

in the Old Testament?

The collective OT Prophets• There were 12 “minor” prophets, as well as 4 “major”

prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekial) in the Old Testament. They lived/prophesied over the course of about 500 years.

• You are going to construct a timeline that includes all 16 prophets, what year/years they lived, what the other major world empires were at the time, and including these major events :– Fall of Samaria 740 bc, Destruction of Jerusalem 607 bc, Fall of

Babylon 539 bc, Return of Exiles 537 bc, Temple rebuilt 515 bc, and the Walls rebuilt 455 bc

• 850-633 – Assyrians• 605-539 – Babylonian (especially Nebuchadnezzar,

who makes Daniel an advisor)• 559-335 – Persian Empire, includes Cyrus, who

allowed Jews to return, and Darius, both of whom continued to use Daniel

Who is Daniel?• Is chosen as a court official by

Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian• Won’t go against God’s desires (won’t eat the

food/drink given by the king)• Began interpreting dreams for the king• Made other advisors mad b/c of his skill• Remained faithful (lion’s den) in spite of

people trying to tempt/test him• Stayed with new Empire

Details about the prophets• You are going to spend 20 minutes gathering

info on a few prophets. You need to include where they were centered, when they lived/wrote, what their main points were.

• You and your partner will gather for a few, make sure you get them all.

• You need to write one paragraph about each of your people. This should include when they lived (one sent), where they lived/prophesied (one sent), and what their prophesies included (4-5 sent).
