Artistic explorations of what it means to be in one’s most vulnerable state.
We live in a very interesting time. Ferguson, Eric Garner, terrorism, global warming and the fragility of humanity juxtaposes with the beauty that surrounds us in the Roaring Fork Valley. This year’s show explores the “human environment,” caught between the light and dark in a world that is transforming. We will journey underground to explore the regions beneath the surface of the earth — gemstones, caves, beauty — as well as the underground that means revolution, discontent, transformation. In between, we will play with shadow and light, black and white. We are so lucky to live in a place where over 80 people will volunteer immense amounts of time to create this message and share their art. That volunteerism leads to more arts programming in our schools and community. Your support of the arts and healthy communities keeps us creating, integrating and moving forward. Thank you.
Amy Kimberly
CCAH welcomes a brand new partner to the Green Is The New Black crew this year! GITNB De-signer Challenge is sponsored by the founders of The Whole Works, a new clothing manufacturing facility in Rifle that employs wom-en who are transitioning from federal assistance. The Whole Works recruits their employees from GarCo Sewing Works, a non-profit design-train-ing center and entrepre-neurial learning lab in Rifle operated by Colo-rado Mountain College in partnership with Gar-field County.
The founders of the Whole Works — Kelly Al-ford, Julia Marshall, Janie Rich and Sadye Harvey — are specifically sponsoring GITNB’s Designer Chal-lenge as a way of support-ing the designers who are on the forefront of design in clothing and fashion. For the past few years, GITNB has offered a Designer Challenge which awards participating designers with a Best Overall award of $500, a Most Fashion Forward Award of $250, and a Most Original Award of $250. The
Designer Challenge has been funda-mental in motivating local design-ers to step up their craftsmanship and create more innovative looks.
This partnership between CCAH and The Whole Works is an excel-
lent fit as “GITNB’s em-phasis is on sustain-able fashion,” expressed CCAH and GITNB direc-tor Amy Kimberly. “The designs must be made of material such as organic silk, cotton, or hemp, or it must be made of up-cycled or reclaimed ma-terial, made by hand, or made in the USA.” The Whole Works represents a small but growing number of businesses that are reinvigorating the American manufac-turing industry, which was decimated as jobs surged overseas in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. The “Made in America” movement
is picking up steam, as brands and buyers move away from fast fashion and towards style with a story.
It is CCAH and The Whole Works’ hope that this partnership encour-

ages local designers to take the next steps in developing their own businesses. As a contract manufacturer, The Whole Works offers pre-production services as well as cut and sew production for emerging and small designers such as the ones that have been participating in GITNB for several years and are on the verge of ex-panding. Melanie Finan, a longstanding GITNB designer and last year’s winner of the Most Fashion Forward Award, will be launching her brand Soma Threads this year after much investment in devel-oping and refining her designs. Finan, who hadn’t designed clothes prior to her participation in GITNB in 2011, feels that GITNB gave her a jump start. When asked about her successes she says, “The clothes sell, so that’s exciting. And now I’m working towards bring-ing my once costume-couture designs down to be street-ready so that you can go out for a night on the town with a dazzling little number that’s hip, unique, and ‘styley’.” For now, Finan will work collaboratively with other artists to produce clothing, but plans to use The Whole Works when she goes into full production.
With this new sponsorship from The Whole Works founders, CCAH is hoping that the GITNB provides a stronger platform from which designers can successfully create. CCAH hopes to continue motivating and challenging designers to improve, give them a venue to show their work on the runway, and provide them the opportunity to sell their work at the trunk sale. But this part-nership with The Whole Works takes this support to a new level, offering a financial boost and publicity to designers who are demonstrating excellence while at the same time connecting them to a sustainable resource for future production. Thank you to The Whole Works for becoming an excellent partner in Green Is The New Black Fashion.
