14th February 2013 - Week 2 Term 1 Positive Start to School Year It has been a great start to the year with the children all positive about their days. It’s fantastic to see some of the junior children making strides in their swimming confidence by getting their heads under water. It’s exciting for the children and the teacher as it means progress can move forward a lot quicker. Bridge Valley Camp Next week all our year 4/5 & 6 children, 56 in total, will be heading on camp to Bridge Valley. The children and parents will be in for an action packed week of activities such as: Abseiling Water-slide Caving Air Rifles Confidence Course 2 Flying Foxes Archery Slippery Pole Rock Climbing Go Karts High Ropes Course Off Roader Karts Half-pipe Kayaking Low Ropes Orienteering Courses Outdoor Sports Gear Room 4 Adventure Week While the campers are at Bridge Valley, the year 3s of Rm 4 will be involved in a week of exciting outdoor adventures such as making scarecrows, visiting Pohara Beach, Labyrinth Rocks, Takaka Library, and Takaka Museum as well as pottery making and visiting a mud brick house in construction at Pigeon Saddle. Bravery Award Room 4’s Dylan was awarded a bravery award in assembly yesterday. I received a phone call from Mark Allinson, a St Johns’ Ambulance Officer who wished to commend Dylan’s bravery, after being involved in a car accident over the weekend. Well done Dylan. Ex -Pupils Make Us Proud A recent proud moment I shared with Jodie and Helen last week was when we attended Eva Wilson’s funeral. Eva’s Aunty Ainslie taught at Motupipi, as did her Grandma Anne. Three of our ex pupils Frances, Amy and Jenna got up in front of a huge gathering and spoke about their friendship with Eva. Another of our ex pupils, Lauren along with Frances got up and bravely took part in a group tap dance. We all felt that they really lived our school vision: Believe in Yourself Be Caring Take the Challenge Succeed Board of Trustees Elections Remember that next Thursday evening 21st February at 7.00pm in the staffroom, we will be having an information evening for those who may be interested in standing in our upcoming elections, or for anyone who may just want to find out what being a Board member involves. A light supper will be served. If you can’t make the meeting, please approach one of our Board members, or call into school and have a chat with Mark. The main skill required is that of enthusiasm, in order to help with setting a vision for our school, so that Motupipi School continues to be the place you wish to send your children. Don’t forget to talk to fellow parents who you think would make a good Board member and ask them about considering standing for this important and very fulfilling role. Room 4 have been busy designing their own “Coats of Arms”.

They chose 4 things that were important to them, for their design.

What wonderful work!

On Friday me and my family went to

Quinney’s Bush Camp. It had Go-Karts, a

waterslide, a huge Flying Fox and many

powered sites. I went crazy on my turn on

the Go-Kart in mud puddle heaven. The

mud in my face, the roar of the engine. I

cant wait to go back.

On Sunday I got a bunny. He is grey. He is called Sunny.

He is a baby. Some day I can bring him to school. He

lives in a hutch. He eats pellets and carrots. He likes to

be cuddled. He is cute.

Friday Lunches Thanks to those parents who have come in to offer help but we still need parents to help make the lunches work! Last year the lunches made the

school $3841.85 which was put towards free buses for school trips, camps and school t-shirts, library books and classroom games. Also the children look forward to the special treat of ordering them each Friday. The lunches can only happen with parent help; whether it is by cooking, preparing or donating ingredients. If you are worried about the cost of making the lunches, remember; you are not expected to buy the ingredients, but if you wish to donate any ingredients you are very welcome and it is much appreciated. If we have plenty of offers of help then it is just a matter of either baking a slice or putting together a lunch once or twice a year. We also have a list of tried and tested lunches or if you prefer, you can make your own favourite! Please call in and give Kirsten your name or phone the office on 525 9986.
