East Tennessee Children’s Hospital’s mission is to improve the health of children through exceptional, comprehensive family-centered care, wellness and education. Our School Nurse Conference puts that mission into action in the community by enhancing the knowledge of school nurses about managing common childhood illnesses and injuries and providing updated information about changes in care for children with chronic diseases.

Course objectivesBy attending this conference, you should be able to:

1. Describe current and future trends in pediatric diabetes management.

2. Describe etiologies of sleepiness in children.

3. Identify the current patterns and trends of adolescent substance abuse.

4. Discuss the process of detecting, reporting and investigating child abuse in Tennessee.

5. Explain the difference between food allergies, adverse food reactions and gluten intolerance.

6. Identify early and late signs of an asthma attack.

This activity will provide 6.25 contact hours. East Tennessee Children’s Hospital is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Tennessee Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This year’s conference is at the Jubilee Banquet Facility.

Coming from downtown Knoxville:1. Take the ramp to I-275 N.2. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for I-275 N/Lexington

and merge onto I-275 N.3. Continue on I-275N and merge onto I-75 N.4. Take exit 110 for Callahan Drive.5. Turn left (westbound) onto Callahan Drive and go for

approximately 1 mile.6. Turn left at Jubilee Center Way.7. Jubilee Banquet Facility is at the back of the strip mall.

Coming from I-75 north (Chattanooga):1. Take I-75 N to I-40 E.2. Take 1-40 E to I-275 N.3. Follow directions 2 to 7 from the first set of directions.

Coming from I-40 west (Nashville):1. Take I-40 E to I-275 N.2. Follow directions 2 to 7 from the first set of directions.

Cathy Van Ostrand, M.S.N., R.N., P.C.N.S.-B.C., C.D.E. Van Ostrand is an endocrinology clinical nurse specialist and program coordinator for the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital Diabetes Program. She has served in this role for more than 15 years. Van Ostrand is board-certified as a clinical nurse specialist in pediatrics and as a diabetes educator.

Phil Noe, P.N.P. Noe is a pediatric nurse practitioner at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. He has been a nurse practitioner for 27 years; 24 of those have been at Children’s Hospital. At present, Noe practices with the Pediatric Pulmonology physician practice and the Sleep Medicine Center at Children’s Hospital. Noe has more than 15 years experience in the field of pediatric sleep medicine.

Ryan Redman, M.D. Dr. Redman graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed his pediatric residency and fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Dr. Redman is the medical director of East Tennessee Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Department and also works as a sedation specialist with Pediatric Analgesia and Sedation Specialists. Currently, he is the graduate medical education coordinator for Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Mary Palmer, M.D. Dr. Palmer attended medical school at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, and completed her residency in pediatrics at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania. She is board-certified in pediatric emergency medicine, pediatrics and child abuse pediatrics. She has been an emergency department physician with East Tennessee Children’s Hospital since 1990 and is the founder of the pediatric forensic medicine services at the hospital.

Juliann M. Chavez, Ph.D., R.D., L.D.N. Dr. Chavez received her bachelor’s degree in scientific nutrition and master’s degree in nutrition with a minor in sociology at Texas A&M University. She completed her doctoral degree in child and family studies in 2009 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Chavez has been at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital since 2003, where she is responsible for community nutrition education, providing nutrition classes at the hospital and seeing patients in the Diabetes and Healthy Ways clinics.

Katelyn Kirk, M.S.N., R.N., C.P.N., A.E.-C. Kirk received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Tennessee Wesleyan College and her master’s degree in nursing from Tennessee Technological University. She is a certified asthma educator. Kirk has worked at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital for four years.
