Our "Diatonic" (the standard major and Natural minor) scales are built from three primary triadsat the first, fourth and fifth note (or degree) of each scale. A triad being the note that you start on,its perfect 5th and a major or minor third in between.

    A~C~

For example, in the key ofC, the fourth degree of the scale is F and the fifth degree of the scale is G. So, yourthree primary triads in the key ofC are C E G, FA C, and G B D. If you list out these nine notes, eliminate theduplicates and put them in alphabetical order, you get the C major scale: C E F GAB C.When you take those same three triads and convert them to minor by simply "flattening" the thirds, in other words:C Eb G, F Ab C, and G Bb D, you get the "Natural Minor" scale for C, which is C Eb F GAb Bb C. This minorscale has three flats and shares its key signature with Eb major. C Minor and Eb major are said to be "relative"because of their shared key signature.

Conversely, if you take a Natural minor scale and convert it to major, you "sharpen" the thirds for each of theprimary triads. For example, the scale of C# minor (C# D# E F# G# A B C#) becomes C# Major when the E, Aand B are sharpened. The resulting C# major scale is C# D# E# F# G# A# B# C#. Our C# minor scale (4 sharps)became the C# major scale with 7 sharps. The "Circle of 5ths" above shows each key and its relative major or minor key above it or below it.Since every note on the piano has a scale, no matter how you "spell" it (i.e. Eb or D#), we get a handful of scalesthat have double sharps and double flats. These scales are theoretical and are not normally used. These are theones that have grey backgrounds in the chord charts that follow.

These three charts show side by side comparisons of every major and Natural minor scale and the correspondingfirst, fourth and fifth triads (or chords) that these scales are built from. Daily practice of each of these triads, playing them in "root" position (i.e. C E G) and inverted (i.e. E G C and GeE) up down the keyboard and indifferent combinations (doubling some of the notes) and playing series or "progressions" of these chords whichsound good to you will be of great benefit to your piano practice and study.Playing a one chord, C E G, following it with an inverted four chord, C F A, then an inverted five chord, D G Band finally playing an inverted one chord, E G C, will give you a good idea of how so many songs are composedusing simple chord progression such as this. Most of our Western music from the classical era on consists of starting at the one chord moving to the four and five chordsand coming back to the one chord. Finally, in theory notation, major chords are given upper case Roman numerals- I, IV and V and minor chords aregiven lower case Roman numerals- i, iv and v.Major scales are built with all major chords (I, IV, and V).Natural minor scales are built with all minor chords (i, iv, and v).Be aware that there are several types of minor scales (Natural, Ascending Melodic, Descending Melodic, and Harmonic)all of which are mixes of major and minor one, four and five chords. The minor scales are constructed as follows: Natural minor scales use i, iv and v triads, Ascending minor scales usei, IV, and V triads, Descending minor scales are made from i, iv, and v triads (same as Natural), and finally your Harmonicminor scales use i, iv and V chords. However, all of the minor scales use the key signature of the Natural minor. One must analyze the music itself to findout how the various types of minor scales are implemented for that particular song.I highly recommend studying basic theory and harmony, it's not as confusing as it may sound at first and it willgreatly enhance your musical knowledge and ability.Visit www.hastiestudio.com/piano.htmlfor future publications, and user name "edhastie" on YouTubeforinstructional videos and piano lessons.
