CHURCH OF SAINT AGNES NEW YORK, N.Y.

May 20, 2018

Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost Sunday

(Traditional Latin Mass)

First Blessings with Fr. Leo Camurati

St. Agnes is pleased to announce that

Father Leo Camurati, O.P. will offer his first Solemn Mass

in the traditional Roman Rite

at the Church of St. Agnes

on Sunday, May 27th, at 9am.

The Mass will be followed by a

coffee and cake reception and

Fr. Camurati’s bestowing of First Blessings

in the undercroft of the church.

Many in the St. Agnes community will remem-ber Brother Leo, who will be Ordained a priest of the Dominican Order on May 19th, as he was a longtime acolyte for our Masses. Today, when he is available, Brother Leo still assists at the Traditional Latin Mass.

What’s new in the bookstore? The Catechism of the Seven Sacraments, by Kev-in and Mary O’Neill, is now available at the St. Agnes bookstore. This books sheds light on the parallels be-tween the Old Testament and the New Testament and the sacraments instituted by Christ that we experience today. Featuring a fun layout to make the theological concepts accessible to both the Catholic and curious, the book is appropriate for children and adults.

Memorial Day Schedule

On Monday, May 28th, we observe Memorial Day. St. Agnes will offer Mass at 8:10am, 12:10pm, and 1:10pm. The church will close after the 1:10pm Mass and there will be no Confessions that day. The rectory office and the bookstore will also be closed. We will resume our schedule the following day.

2nd Collection for Tabernacle Repairs

We continue to

need assistance with

the expense of re-

pairing and cleaning

our Tabernacle. This

crucial work costs

$30,000 and we are

still short of our

goal. This week-

end’s second collection will be for the

Tabernacle. We really do need your help

for this important project. Thank you!

Catholic Artists Society Annual Mass

The Catholic Artists Society will host its

seventh annual Mass for Artists on Monday, May 21st, at 7:00 PM

at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament on West 71st Street.

The Most Reverend James Massa,

Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, will offer the Mass and the Schola Cantorum of

St. Vincent Ferrer will sing music of Spanish Renaissance composer

Tomás Luis de Victoria: Missa Beata Maria, Gaude Maria Virgo, and Regina caeli á 5.

For more information, please visit: www.catholicartistssociety.org.

Holy Water St. Agnes has Holy Water available in the north east corner of the church, near the statue of St. Michael. Bring your own bottle, or purchase one in the bookstore for a few dollars.

Pentecost - What’s in a name?

1. What does the name “Pentecost” mean? It comes from the Greek word for "fiftieth" (pentecoste). The reason is that Pentecost is the

fiftieth day (Greek, pentecoste hemera) after Easter Sunday (on the Christian calendar). This

name came into use in the late Old Testament period and was inherited by the authors of the New

Testament.

2. What else is this feast known as? In the Old Testament, it is referred to by several names:

• The feast of weeks

• The feast of harvest

• The day of first-fruits

Today in Jewish circles it is known as Shavu`ot (Hebrew, “weeks"). It goes by various names in

different languages. In England (and English), it has also been known as "Whitsunday" (white

Sunday). This name is presumably derived from the white baptismal garments of those recently

baptized.

3. What kind of feast was Pentecost in the Old Testament? It was a harvest festival, signifying the end of the grain harvest. Deuteronomy 16 states:

You shall count seven weeks; begin to count the seven weeks from the time you first put the sickle

to the standing grain. Then you shall keep the feast of weeks to the Lord your God with the tribute

of a freewill offering from your hand, which you shall give as the Lord your God blesses you; and

you shall rejoice before the Lord your God [Dt. 16:9-11a].

May is the month of Mary

In recognition of this month, dedicated by the

Church to the Blessed Mother, we offer you the

words of Pope Pius XII for contemplation:

[It can] be stated that this glorious Lady had

been chosen Mother of Christ “in order that she

might become a partner in the redemption of the human race.”

“It was she who, free of the stain of actual and

original sin, and ever most closely bound to her Son,

on Golgotha offered that Son to the Eternal Father

together with the complete sacrifice of her maternal

rights and maternal love…for all the sons of Adam,

stained as they were by his lamentable fall.”

Queenship Of Mary, 11 October 1954

A Listening Ear For meditation, the ear of the soul is more important than the tongue.

St. Paul tells us that faith comes from listening.

Most people commit the same mistake with God that they do with their friends: t

hey do all the talking.

- Go to Heaven by Venerable Fulton J. Sheen.

Guidelines for Receiving the Eucharist

As Catholics, we believe that the Eucharist really is

the Lord—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. It is not a

symbolic gesture, but truly Him who we receive. There-

fore, we must properly prepare, showing respect and rever-

ence. How to do this?

♦ Be prepared by being in a state of grace. If you are in

mortal sin, Church law says that you cannot receive the

Eucharist. Make a plan to go to Confession.

♦ Be prepared by fasting 1 hour before receiving the Eu-

charist. This is Church law for all Catholics. Water and

medicine are allowed. Question? Ask a priest.

♦ If you receive in the hand, make sure your hands are

clean (no gloves!).

♦ Consume the Eucharist immediately. For the safety

of the Blessed Sacrament, you MUST consume the

host immediately; you may not take it back to the

pew with you. If you cannot abide by this rule, do

not present yourself for Communion.

♦ Return to the pew, kneeling until the remaining hosts

are returned to the Tabernacle. You are in the Presence

of the Lord; kneeling at this time is important. If you

have a physical disability, sitting is allowed.

♦ Take time to make your petitions and also offer

Thanksgiving for graces received. This is your time to

focus and intimately speak to the Lord/the Heavenly

Father/the Holy Trinity.
