    Can be run from the installation CD.

    The HCL provides a comprehensivelist of hardware products by categoryand keyword.

    The Windows Server Catalog tool isused to check hardware compatibilityfor Windows Server 2003.

    Attended Installation

    An attended installation requires ausers continuous involvement duringthe installation process.

    This installation method requires theleast amount of preparation.

    Unattended Installation

    An unattended installation does notrequire constant user involvementduring the installation process.

    The installation can be initiated bypre-configuring an answer file calledunattend.txt.

    Unattended installations are beneficial:

    When the operating system is to be installedon several similar servers.

    For deploying a large number of clientoperating systems such as Windows XP orWindows 2000 Professional.

    This method WILL NOT BE

    DISCUSSED HERE. There is No NEEDto install many copies of Server

    For installing Windows Server 2003on computers connected to anexisting network:

    Copy the \I386 directory from theinstallation CD to a shared folder on thenetwork.

    Copy files, such as answer files and device

    drivers, to the same folder.

    Map the folder to a drive letter on themachine where the operating system is tobe installed.

    Imaged Installation

    Imaged installation is useful whenWindows Server 2003 needs to beset up on several identical

    computers.

    Disk image is used to performimaged installations.

    Clean installation:

    Refers to installing the operating systemon a computer hard drive that does not

    contain any prior operating system ordata.

    Eliminates any chance of

    incompatibilities with older software.Provides the new operating system

    maximum control over certain aspectsof hardware configuration.

    Upgrade or CleanInstallation

    Upgrade installation:

    New operating system replaces theexisting operating system.

    Existing configuration settings andinstalled applications, and data arepreserved.

    It does not support downgrades.

    Partitioning

    A hard drive partition is a discreteportion of the hard drive.

    The partition is used as a structurefor organizing data on the drive.

    File System

    File system organizes the partitionand tracks the location of files on thedrive.

    The basic file systems are FAT andNTFS.

    Licensing

    The two licensing modes for WindowsServer 2003 are:

    Per-Server licensing.

    Per-Device or Per User licensing.

    Per-Server Licensing

    Per-Server licensing is based on thetotal number of concurrentconnections to a particular server.

    It is ideal for small networks.

    Per-Device or Per-UserLicensing

    Per Device licensing requires alicense for every connection to theserver.

    There is no limit on simultaneousconnections.

    It is ideal for large networks whereclient devices connect to more thanone server.

    Server Name

    The server name must be unique.

    It can contain a maximum of 63characters.

    It can have upper and lowercaseletters, numbers, and hyphens.

    Initial Password

    Passwords are required to keep thesystem secure.

    They must be changed frequently.

    Passwords must not be reused.

    Network Settings

    The Windows Server 2003installation program offers two typesof network settings:

    Typical settings Configure theserver to use the TCP/IP protocolsuite and obtain the correct IPaddress automatically.

    Custom settings Allow users toselect and configure the requirednetworking protocols and services.

    Microsoft Product Activation (MPA) and Windows

    Server 2003

    Microsoft Product Activation (MPA) is a newapproach to reduce piracy of operating systems,office suites, and other Microsoft products.

    Through MPA, products must be activated withina limited number of days or they will not work.

    Products can be activated only on one computersystem, thus eliminating the value of illicit copies

    of the software.

    1 Critical updates Address security

    flaws or problems that could result in data lossor system failure.

    system released after intensive testing. 3 Windows Server 2003 family

    Includes minor refinements and additions tothe operating system.

    4 Driver updates Improvements tosoftware programs that allow hardwarecomponents to communicate with theoperating system.

    Windows Server 2003 installation mayfail if:

    The operating system upgrade path

    does not support its installation.

    The computer does not support bootableCDs.

    The user fails to press the required keyat the stipulated time to boot thesystem from the CD drive.

    Resuming a failed installation:

    If the installation program reboots intothe graphical interface, it will start the

    process from where it left off. If the installation fails during text mode

    portion, it would be necessary torepartition and reformat the drive.

    Addressing unexpected performanceproblems:

    Check for device driver compatibility.

    Check for application updates.
