THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

Marriage Class continued, Lesson ad infinitum - ad nauseam
John Paul Elliot and Patricia Anne White were married by a Justice of the Peace in a civil ceremony at the Peristyle of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It was followed with a beautiful cocktail reception in the Rose Garden after which the whole party was led by the marching band and the famous horse of a near-by university to a banquet in the Space Museum. Their relationship grew strong and after three years of marriage they were planning a family with children. They attend Mass and participate in the life of their parish, St. Gabriel Gateway to Glory. One day they made an appointment with their pastor, Fr. Quinn Sirach. JP and Trish explained that they are married civilly and now want to have their marriage “blessed.” Fr. Quinn was delighted! He explained that the process is quite simple and began to prepare them. They will have to collect newly issued baptismal certificates from the churches of their baptism, a copy of their marriage license, complete the Pre-Nuptial questionnaire, and learn about “Marriage in the Church.” They wanted a simple “validation ceremony” which took place in about six months. A reception followed with a delicious meal at an art museum with vistas overlooking the Pacific Ocean but looks
down on a different university.
Sid Robinowitz and Margret Mary Radcliffe completed their pre-marriage preparation and were married in the Roman Catholic Church. There was compassionate discussion whether or not to have a full Mass or to be married “without a Mass.” To respect everyone who would attend they selected some readings from Sacred Scripture and were married without a Mass. A rabbi whom the Robinowitz family knew was able to participate with a role in the ceremony.
In conclusion: marriage ceremonies between a Catholic and non-Catholic or non-Christian are discussed and planned with considera-tion for those who are celebrating the marriage (the couple) and their families and friends who will be attending.
Let’s conclude our whole marriage course: Marriage although personal is not simply a private act. Matters of civil and ecclesial law must be regarded. To begin; both codes have such requirements as minimum age, require the presence of an authorized officiant, and a person who is already married cannot marry another. The Church defines marriage as a covenant partnership, the purpose of which is the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children in the ways of the faith. Their covenant involves a personal and permanent bond of love. It is public as it establishes legal rights and obligations in society. Catholic marriage is a sign of God’s love; His covenant with humanity. It is a sacrament as it affects the whole community called Church. As the bride and groom marry each other, they themselves invite and accept God into their union. It is a graced union, a sacred commitment. As we have learned, each sacrament is an effective sign of grace. As always, if you want to know what the Church believes, listen to its prayers. Consider the opening prayer for the Marriage Mass: “Father, you have made the bond of marriage a holy mystery, a symbol of Christ’s love for his Church. Hear our prayers today for JP and Trish. With faith in you and in each other they pledge their love today. May their lives always bear witness to the reality of that love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen!”
The bride and groom are the ministers of the sacrament of marriage. They “give the sacrament to each other.” It is their consent that brings about the sacrament of marriage. The priest/deacon is not the minister of the sacrament, it is best to say he is the official wit-ness of the church – one of three including the best man and maid of honor who witness to what the true ministers, the bride and groom are doing. Note further, the sacrament is conferred, it comes into existence, when the bride and groom exchange vows. Ad finem. QED
GO FALCONS! Hear the good news of St. Juliana Parish Grammar School – the 2016-2017 academic year opened with 301 students enrolled from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through the Eighth Grade. WOW O WOWEEE! Best wishes, bunches of prayers to our Administrators, faculty, staff, parents, benefactors, and of course – the students. You swell us with pride. God Bless you, each of you! GO FALCONS!
This Sunday after the 7:30 and 9:00 Masses, please see a display of the proposed new flooring, pews, and color chart/scheme for our church. Next Sunday, September 4th, after the 9:00 Mass, Ms. Jan Turcotte who designed the enhancements will introduce herself and explain the design. Jan is a Roman Catholic who works with but not for the Diocese of Orange. Ms Turcotte is known in our diocese for her work which includes Holy Family Cathedral, St. Joseph in Placentia, St. Edwards in Dana Point, Holy Spirit in Foun-tain Valley, St. Boniface in Anaheim and the list is longer than these. The scheme is approved by the Liturgical Commission of the Diocese of Orange. Certain liturgical standards that had to be met - material which gives dignity to worship, is among them. I hope you will approve of her choices. Her liturgical design work is certainly a ministry. She is available to help with your home or of-fice!
