Verrazano Honors at the College of Staten Island
Greetings from the Verrazano Honors Program at the College of Staten Island!
Verrazano Honors is what an ideal college experience should look like. Our students take honors
classes with other talented, motivated students; engage in the campus and New York City
community through community service and Verrazano-organized extracurricular activities; conduct
independent research and other substantive scholarly activities; and get individualized advising on
academics and careers.
Our students thrive. For example:
• Our current Jeanette K. Watson Scholar returned from a paid internship in Rwanda, where she explored the public health care system post-genocide. Another recent graduate is completing his second Fulbright fellowship in education just outside Mexico City. Our students are going places!
• Our recent graduates are in medical, dental, PA, OT, and PT schools; have full-time positions in engineering, finance, education, and in the non-profit world, and others are pursuing graduate degrees.
• Almost 20% of last year's graduating class studied abroad in places like Japan, Italy, Ireland France, Morocco, among others, partially funded with Verrazano study abroad scholarships.
• 100% of our students complete mentored research, and some start as early as their first semester of their freshman year.
To read more about the amazing things Verrazano students are doing, visit our blog, the Verrazano
Voyager, at www.theverrazanovoyager.blogspot.com .
There is still time to apply for Fall 2020. We will begin reviewing applications on February 1, and
will continue to accept applications through mid-April. Please note that students can be in BOTH
Verrazano Honors and ASAP, the Teacher Honors Academy, SEEK, and a Division II athlete! Note
on a change to our application: instead of two essays with Verrazano-specific topics, we have
changed it to one essay on a topic of their choice-we figure they have written scads of essays for
college-why make them do two more? Students will still need to apply to CSI using the CUNY
application or the Common App, and the Verrazano supplemental
application: https://webdocs.csi.cuny.edu/VZ/ .
We encourage all enthusiastic, high-achieving students to apply to Verrazano. Last year's class
had a 92 high school average, a composite score of 1100 on the SAT (Evidence-Based Reading
and Writing + Math), and were involved in leadership, community service, and extracurricular
activities. Read the included one-page handout for more info!
