Stairway to Heaven

• Jacob’s ladder isn’t for you to climb. Jesus descends to us and brings us the medicine.

• What are the ways people falsely think they’ll get to “heaven”?

Let us pray to the living God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, who has promised to be with us and to keep us wherever we go. Heavenly Father, You gave us Your Son, Jesus, the authority on earth to forgive sins. Grant that we may always rejoice to receive this forgiveness in Your Church, through Your Absolution and Your Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Keep us faithful in receiving Your gifts, that by Your grace we may cling to You in faith unto life everlasting. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Almighty God, our Savior sent forth His Church to the ends of the earth to proclaim the Good News of salvation in Him. Give us willing hearts to support the preaching of Your Word in our community and throughout the world. And today we especially ask Your blessing upon the work of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and all who proclaim the Good News

in Christ, that through their efforts, all the families of the earth may be blessed… Merciful Lord, You blessed Jacob with offspring as numerous as the dust of the earth. Give comfort to those in our midst who long for children but are unable to conceive. May they find in the Church a family to love and cherish… Gracious Father, in the waters of Baptism You rescued us from our fallen condition and adopted us as Your own children. Guide those who are seeking to adopt children of their own, that they may be a model of Your love. Give them patience and endurance, as they work through the adoption process. Place children in need into loving homes with faithful parents, that they may be baptized in Your name and taught the truth of Your Word…

Almighty God, You have given to man the breath of life. Provide Your ongoing care to those who are unable to leave their homes and to those who are nearing death. Give them consolation, that they may know You are with them as they await the hour when they will be raised to a glorious life with You in Your kingdom.... Merciful Father, by His authority on earth, Your Son made the lame to walk. Restore all who are ill, injured or in need of treatment [especially ___________________ ]. Grant them swift recovery, that they may rejoice in You as the source of all healing of both body and soul.... Bountiful Lord, You have

prepared a feast for us in which You have given us the forgiveness of all our sins. Help us to put away all falsehood and be reconciled with one another, that through this meal we may be renewed in Your Spirit, putting on the new self, created after Your likeness in true righteousness and holiness.... Join our prayers and praises to those of Your faithful people of every time and every place, and unite them in the ceaseless petitions of our great High Priest, Jesus Christ, until He comes again as victorious Lord of all. Through Him, with Him and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is Yours, almighty Father, forever and ever. Amen.

1 Lord, Thee I love with all my heart;I pray Thee, ne'er from me depart,With tender mercy cheer me.Earth has no pleasure I would share,Yea, heav'n itself were void and bareIf Thou, Lord, were not near me.And should my heart for sorrow break,My trust in Thee no one could shake.Thou art the portion I have sought;Thy precious blood my soul has bought.Lord Jesus Christ, My God and Lord, my God and Lord,Forsake me not! I trust Thy Word.

2 Yea, Lord, 'twas Thy rich bounty gaveMy body, soul, and all I haveIn this poor life of labor.Lord, grant that I in ev'ry placeMay glorify Thy lavish graceAnd help and serve my neighbor.Let no false doctrine me beguile;

And Satan not my soul defile.Give strength and patience unto meTo bear my cross and follow Thee.Lord Jesus Christ, My God and Lord, my God and Lord,In death Thy comfort still afford.

3 Lord, let at last Thine angels come,To Abram's bosom bear me home,That I may die unfearing; And in its narrow chamber keepMy body safe in peaceful sleepUntil Thy reappearing. And then from death awaken meThat these mine eyes with joy may see,O Son of God, Thy glorious face,My Savior and my fount of grace,Lord Jesus Christ, my prayer attend, my prayer attend,And I will praise Thee without end.

Genesis 28:10-17

Jacob's Dream10 Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder[a] set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it!13 And behold, the LORD stood above it[b]and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your

offspring.14 Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORDis in this place, and I did not know it.”17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Ephesians 4:22-2822 to put off your old self,[a

] which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of

you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

9 And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. 2 And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” 3 And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” 4 But Jesus, knowing[a]their thoughts, said, “Why do

you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” 7 And he rose and went home. 8 When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

Psalm 84

My Soul Longs for the Courts of the LORD

To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith.[a] A Psalm of the Sons of Korah.

84 How lovely is your dwelling place,    O LORD of hosts!2 My soul longs, yes, faints    for the courts of the LORD;my heart and flesh sing for joy    to the living God.3 Even the sparrow finds a home,    and the swallow a nest for herself,    where she may lay her young,at your altars, O LORD of hosts,    my King and my God.4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house,     ever singing your praise!Selah5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you,     in whose heart are the highways

to Zion.[b]

6 As they go through the Valley of Baca    they make it a place of springs;    the early rain also covers it with pools.7 They go from strength to strength;    each one appears before God in Zion.8 O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer;    give ear, O God of Jacob!Selah9 Behold our shield, O God;    look on the face of your anointed!10 For a day in your courts is better    than a thousand elsewhere.I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God    than dwell in the tents of wickedness.11 For the LORD God is a sun andshield;    the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold    from those who walk uprightly.12 O LORD of hosts,    blessed is the one who trusts in you!

Share Time: THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Genesis 28:10–17Ephesians 4:22–28Matthew 9:1–8 Jesus’ Incarnation Secures for Us Life, Forgiveness, and Healing The Lord does not require us to ascend to Him; in mercy He descends to us (Gen. 28:10–17). The ladder in Jacob’s dream was not for climbing; it was the means by which the Lord came to bless Jacob. This event finds its fulfillment in Christ who descended from His throne to save and bless us. By His incarnation He is the eternal bridge between heaven and earth. “The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” (Matt. 9:1–8). The Lord was present in the flesh to absolve the paralytic. Jesus also healed and restored this man’s body. “For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation” (Small Catechism). The Lord still has power on earth to forgive sins. In holy absolution He raises up the new man (Eph. 4:22–28) and bestows the healing medicine which will bring about our resurrection on the Last Day. Thus we say with Jacob, “This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!” (Gen. 28:17)

Isaiah 55:1-9The Compassion of the LORD55 “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;and he who has no money, come, buy and eat!Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.3 Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live;and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love forDavid.4 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples.5 Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.6 “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near;7 let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts;let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.Ephesians 5:15-2115 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another inpsalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.Matthew 22:1-14

The Parable of the Wedding Feast22 And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, 2 “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, 3 andsent his servants[a] to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. 4 Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared mydinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’5 But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, 6 while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, andkilled them. 7 The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ 10 And those servants went out into the roads andgathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.11 “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”Matthew 21:33-44PsThe Parable of the Tenants33 “Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. 34 When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants[a]to the tenants to get his fruit. 35 And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39 And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41 They said to him,“He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:“‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;[b]this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away

from you and given to a people producing its fruits.44 And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”[c]Psalm 27:1-9The LORD Is My Light and My SalvationOf David.27 The LORD is my light and mysalvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold[a] of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?2 When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh,my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall.3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear;though war arise against me, yet[b] I will be confident.4 One thing have I asked of theLORD, that will I seek after:that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,to gaze upon the beauty of theLORD and to inquire[c] in his temple.5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble;he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.6 And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me,and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy;I will sing and make melody to the LORD.7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me!8 You have said, “Seek[d] my face.”My heart says to you, “Your face, LORD, do I seek.”[e]9 Hide not your face from me.Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help.Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation!
