was decked up with fresh flow-ers and festoons. Family mem-bers said, wife Rabri Devi wokeup Lalu just after the midnightand extended birthday wishesby offering a bunch of red roses.Lalu also cut a family cake. TheRJD boss later posted the mid-night birthday celebration pic-tures on his official Twitterhandle.

Later around 10 am inthe morning, Lalu cut a hugecake weighing 69 kg, which isequal to his birthday number, flanked by wife Rabri Devi andtwo sons Tejaswi Prasad Yadavand Tej Pratap Yadav. This cakewas prepared by his party men.

Tejashwi said, Lalujee's birthday was being cel-ebrated as 'Samajik Nyay Diwas'(social justice day) by the RJDacross the country.

Soon after, NitishKumar reached the 10, CircularRoad and extended his birthdaywishes to Lalu with offering aflower bouquet. Speaking on theoccasion, the CM said, "Life of

Lalu Prasad has been full ofstruggle. Reaching to this heightin politics from a humble back-ground he comes from is very in-spiring. I pray that Lalu Jeereaches further height in politics."Lalu and Nitish are known inBihar's political circle as "BadeBhai" (Lalu) and "Chotte Bhai"(Nitish).

Azad, Kamalnathappointed Congress general secretaries

NEW DELHI: Senior leadersGhulam Nabi Azad and KamalNath were appointed Congressgeneral secretaries by partychief Sonia Gandhi today, set-ting in motion the much talkedabout process of organisationalchanges ahead of the Assemblyelections next year, including inUttar Pradesh.

While Azad, Leader ofOpposition in the Rajya Sabha, has been made in charge ofUttar Pradesh, Nath will look af-ter Punjab and Haryana, partygeneral secretary JanaradanDwivedi said. Assembly elec-tions in Uttar Pradesh andPunjab are scheduled early nextyear.

So far MadhusudanMistry was looking after UttarPradesh and Shakeel Ahmedwas taking care of Punjab andHaryana.

Today's appointmentsare being seen as a precursor tofurther restructuring of the AICCSecretariat. The reshuffle cameat a time when talk of RahulGandhi being elevated as partychief had again gained ground.

Sonia Gandhi effected

the changes a day after the bi-ennial elections to the RajyaSabha which saw cross votingby some party MLAs in UttarPradesh and alleged deliberatefaulty marking by its 14 legisla-tors in Haryana which led totheir votes being declared in-valid and resulted in the defeatof Congress-backed candidateR K Anand. There were allega-tions of internal sabotage at thebehest of former Haryana chiefminister Bhupinder SinghHooda.Azad, 67, is a formerchief minister of Jammu andKashmir, and is seen as a Gandhifamily loyalist. 69-year-old Nathis the seniormost MP in the cur-rent Lok Sabha having won fromhis pocket borough ofChhindwara nine times.

Azad was earlier twicethe AICC general secretary incharge of UP. Nath was a gen-eral secretary some 15 yearsback in charge of key states likeGujarat and West Bengal. Hisname was doing rounds as thepossible new party chief inMadhya Pradesh.

Congress has roped inpoll strategist Prashant Kishor,

who successfully managed PrimeMinister Narendra Modi's LokSabha campaign in 2014 andBihar chief minister NitishKumar's last year, to aid and as-sist the party's UP and Haryanaunits.

In UP, Congress hadsecured just two seats in the lastLok Sabha elections with SoniaGandhi and Rahul Gandhi emerg-ing victorious from their tradi-tional seats of Rae Bareli andAmethi respectively. The Congress is in political wil-derness in UP since 1989 follow-ing emergence of divisive'Mandal-Mandir' politics and riseof the BSP, which took away itscrucial dalit vote base.

In Punjab, Congress isin the opposition for the last nineyears and is making a determinedbid to capture power from SAD-BJP combine at a time when AAPhas also come up as a seriouscontender for power.

The appointment ofseasoned politicians like Azadand Nath came amid calls for a"major surgery" from within theparty following its recent debaclein

Pressure onMaharashtra, Goa to

ban SansthaMUMBAI: With the sensa-tional arrest of a member ofthe shadowy Sanatan Sansthain the murder of rationalistNarendra Dabholkar, politicalpressure is back once again onthe ruling BJP governments inMaharashtra and Goa to banthe right-wing organization.

A day after the CBIpicked up Virendra Tawde, anENT specialist, for his allegedinvolvement in the murder ofDabholkar, the opposition inMaharashtra reiterated its de-mand for a ban. State Con-gress president and formerCM Ashok Chavan said, "Inthe past too, Congress hadsought a ban...now after thearrest of Tawde, we onceagain urge that SanatanSanstha be banned immedi-ately on the grounds that itsactivities are dangerous to thenation,'' Chavan told TOI.

Former chief minis-ter Prithviraj Chavan too en-dorsed the demand, sayingthe Centre should immedi-ately ban the organisation.

The issue may putBJP in a spot since its gov-ernment in Maharashtra hadpromised action provided"evidence" emerged of theoutfit's links to the assassinsof Dabholkar and other ra-tionalists Govind Pansare andMM Kalburgi. In the past,CM Devendra Phadnavishad said the state would nothesitate to act against theSanstha if there was proof. His government along withCBI had also offered a Rs25-lakh reward for informa-tion on the case. But itstopped short of sending aformal request to the Centreseeking a ban on theorganisation.

With ‘phone diplomacy’,Pak istan looks to sta ll India 's NSG bid

NEW DELHI: Pakistan's dubi-ous track record on non-prolif-eration hasn't come in the wayof its 'telephone diplomacy' toreach out to influential membersof the NSG to take the wind outof India's campaign formembership.Pakistan has de-manded that NSG follow a crite-ria-based approach for the in-duction of all non-NPT states, and not make a 2008-like excep-tion for India. Pakistan PMNawaz Sharif's adviser SartajAziz has ceaselessly worked thephones over the past few daysdemanding that NSG not adopta discriminatory approach byallowing India to become a

member. On Friday, he spoke tohis counterparts in Mexico andItaly seeking support for Paki-stan, which too has applied forNSG membership. The US hasnow warned Pakistan that ratherthan seeking individual en-dorsements, it should put up itscase before the NSG.

"That's a collectivedecision reached by the mem-bers of the group," said US statedepartment spokesperson MarkToner, when asked if the USwould support Pakistan's bid.

Media in Pakistan hasreported that Islamabad alsowrote to American lawmakersseeking their support for

Pakistan's application.Islamabad wants to

keep the door open for its ownmembership even if there is nofavourable outcome for its appli-cation in the immediate run. Someof the hold-out nations which aresaid to be now softening theirposition on India's NSG member-ship are also said to be insistingon a criteria-based approach. Azizhas also spoken to the foreignministers of Russia, New Zealandand South Korea.

Pakistan on Friday alsosaid the increasing Indo-US de-fence cooperation will disturb theregional balance", both conven-tional and strategic.
