On behalf of the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC), the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and the Programme Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to the ninth biennial IADC/SPE Asia Pacific Drilling Technology Conference (APDT) scheduled 9-11 July 2012 in Tianjin, China.

The theme of this conference is “Catching the Unconventional Tide: Winning the Future Through Innovation.” Although conventional development, especially in the offshore deepwater provinces, still dominate production capacity, the theme captures the rapidly growing importance of unconventional resources and the vital role that technology innovation will play in sustaining the world’s future energy demands.

In order to address this year’s theme, the Technical Programme Committee has assembled a diverse and comprehensive technical programme, featuring presentations of more than 100 papers from around the world in technical and poster sessions. In addition, industry leaders will provide a variety of perspectives on the conference theme at the opening ceremony, keynote session, panel sessions, special sessions and daily topical luncheons.

A technical exhibition will be held in conjunction with the conference, bringing together top organisations from around the world to display the latest in technological advancements and afford delegates the opportunity to share views, discuss challenges and consider potential solutions, all while networking with other industry professionals.

In addition to the extensive technical programme and exhibition, two Training Courses will be held prior to the event on Sunday, 8 July, creating an opportunity for industry professionals to deepen their knowledge on the topics of Deepwater Drilling and Shale Gas.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit professional association whose members are engaged in energy resources development

and production. SPE serves more than 104,000 members in 123 countries worldwide. SPE is a key resource for technical knowledge related to the oil and gas exploration and production industry and provides services through its publications, events, training courses, and online resources at www.spe.org.

2012 Spe president: Ganesh thakur

Ganesh Thakur is a world-recognized leader in reservoir engineering & simulation, secondary recovery, reservoir and well productivity improvement, heavy

oil, horizontal well technology and EOR. He is also known for the emergence of reservoir management (RM)—in particular waterflooding—as a key interdisciplinary practice. Thakur has an impressive list of publications and teaching engagements conducted around the world. His skills and expertise are called upon widely in the design and operation of RM programs, mentoring technical professionals, and serving as an ambassador of technical capabilities to National Oil Companies and Government Ministries. He is an SPE Distinguished Member and has served as Technical Director – Reservoir for the Board of Directors, and an SPE Distinguished Lecturer. Thakur has authored 50 technical articles, three books, edited two SPE reprint series, and presented over 150 lectures/short courses around the world.

A past chairperson of the SPE Reprint Series, Thakur has served on the SPE Editorial Review and Forum Series committees and as short-course instructor on Integrated Reservoir Management and Waterflood Management. He received SPE’s 2005 Reservoir Description and Dynamics award, 2006 Penn State University’s outstanding alumni achievement award, and 1994 Orange County, California’s outstanding engineer of the year award. Thakur earned a BS degree in petroleum engineering from Indian School of Mines and MS and PhD degrees in petroleum and natural gas engineering, plus an MA degree in mathematics, all from Pennsylvania State University. In addition, he earned an executive MBA degree from Houston Baptist University. He has served as an adjunct professor at USC, University of Texas (Permian Basin), University of Houston, and Houston Baptist University.

The International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) is dedicated to enhancing the interests of oil-and-gas and geothermal drilling contractors worldwide. IADC’s contract-drilling

members own most of the world’s land and offshore drilling units and drill the vast majority of the wells that produce the planet’s oil and gas. IADC’s membership also includes oil-and-gas producers, and manufacturers and suppliers of oilfield equipment and services. Founded in 1940, IADC’s mission is to improve industry health, safety and environmental practices; advance drilling and completion technology; and champion responsible standards, practices, legislation and regulations that provide for safe, efficient and environmentally sound drilling operations worldwide. IADC holds Accredited Observer status at the International Maritime Organization and the International Seabed Authority, specialized agencies of the United Nations. The Association is a leader in developing standards for industry training, notably its Well Control Accreditation Program (WellCAP) and rig-floor orientation program, RIG PASS. 2012 iaDC Chairman: Daniel w. rabun

Daniel W. Rabun, 2012 Chairman of the International Association of Drilling Contractors, is Chairman, President and CEO of Ensco plc. Mr.Rabun joined

Ensco in March 2006 as President and Director and was appointed CEO and Chairman of the board in 2007. Before joining Ensco, he was a partner at the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie, where he practiced law for 20 years. Mr. Rabun served as Vice Chairman of the International Association of Drilling Contractors during 2011, and was elected 2012 IADC Chairman at the 2011 IADC Annual General Meeting held in Austin during November.

Mr. Rabun is a certified public accountant and holds a BBA in accounting from the University of Houston and a Juris Doctorate degree from Southern Methodist University.

Unconventional resources demand unconventional approaches. The industry has taken a giant leap in the economical development of shale hydrocarbons, coalbed methane, tight gas, and other resources. Discovery was not an issue. The existence of these resources have long been noted. But economic development was another matter, and only came about through dramatic advances in

the efficiency of drilling and completion technologies such as fracturing and horizontal drilling. Efforts to automate the drilling process have also taken a fast track and are seen as another step change to development of unconventional resources.

Beyond the burgeoning pursuit of unconventionals, development of comparatively conventional resources, even deepwater, are increasingly looking to new advances in technology for an economic reprieve. Managed pressure drilling, HPHT techniques and other advances are leading the way for the industry to work in ever more extreme conditions, where the prize is greatest.

See Hong Ong, GeoMechanics International’s (GMI) Global Technical Advisor based in Houston, has more than 25 years of world-wide experience in petroleum engineering and petroleum-related geomechanics research and applications. He

joined GMI after working for Baker Hughes in Houston as petroleum engineering and global geomechanics manager, and PETRONAS in Malaysia and Vietnam with both management and operational responsibilities. Dr. Ong, who has numerous publications in petroleum geomechanics and has taught several industry short courses in oilfield geomechanics, received his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from the University of Oklahoma, USA.

Barry is currently the Manager of Well Operations for Transocean’s Well Operations Group. His group is responsible for providing well construction and well control support to Transocean’s fleet. He began his career at Transocean in 1997 and has held various positions in the UK, middle east and

Gulf of Mexico, including Rig Engineer, Offshore Drilling Engineer, Drilling Supervisor, Senior Drilling Engineer, Well Engineering Manager and Well Construction Manager.

Barry holds a BEng in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University in Belfast Ireland and a Master’s degree in Subsea Engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh Scotland.
