Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Matlosana Municipality broke its silence at last about the Eskom electricity crisis facing the community.

In a short statement on Tuesday 11 August, Ntswaki Makgetha, spokesper-son, said the leadership of the munici-pality is currently in negotiations with Eskom, regarding the payment of the municipal account owed to the power utility.

“The management would like to as-sure the public that they are doing eve-rything in their powers to pay the debt and to suspend the implementation of the interruptions of electricity supply in the municipality,’’ she said.

But the community is tired of waiting for the municipality. The business fra-ternity under the leadership of local at-torney Johan Oosthuizen, chairperson of the Matlosana Chamber of Business, is taking Eskom and the municipality to court. Within two days, more than

R100 000 was raised to help foot the legal bill.

“People are tired of a municipality that cannot deliver basic services. We cannot continue like this,’’ Oosthuizen said. “We are asking the court to force the municipality into going into an agreement with us to take over financial management of the municipality or the council must disband.’’

Two urgent applications will be heard in the High Court on Thursday 13 August. One by Pioneer Foods, manu-facturer of maize meal at its Sasko plant in Klerksdorp, as well as the Wilmed Trust, owner of the biggest private hos-pital in the city. The Chamber of Busi-ness is included as an applicant on the Wilmed Trust application.

The DA’s Caucus leader in the mu-nicipality, Cllr Elmarie Postma, said it is unfair for Eskom to continue with the electricity disconnection despite the municipality making a R150 mil-

Lentswe, Mahikeng - The Hawks in-vestigation into the murder of off-duty cop, Const Thato Makhoana (26) led to the arrest of more suspects on Friday 7 August and Sunday 9 August respec-tively.

According to the provincial spokes-person Capt Tlangelani Rikhotso, the suspects, Gabriel Anyawu (32), Idtisam Naseer (22), Aijiz Haimal (24) and Mo-hammed Afzal (24) were each released on R2000 bail. Goitseone Maseng (32) and Joseph Mathe (47) will appear on Wednesday 19 August for a formal bail application.

Their brief appearance was in the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court.

“Constable Makhoana was found murdered just outside Mahikeng on Wednesday 29 July. His vehicle was later found torched at Majemantsho village. An immediate manhunt for the killers was launched resulting in the arrest of one suspect on Tuesday 4 Au-gust.

“A multi-disciplinary team consisting of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, assisted by members of LCRC, Detectives, K9 and Flying squad

followed up on further leads that led to the discovery of the deceased’s cell phones. Three Pakistani nationals and a Nigerian suspect were arrested,” Capt Rikhotso said.

Hawks said subsequently, another suspect alleged to be the main perpe-trator was arrested in Mahikeng.

“A 9mm service pistol, ammunition and handcuffs belonging to the de-ceased were recovered at a house in Ma-hikeng. The owners of the house were later arrested at a hideout in Majemant-sho village where two more pistols were seized from them,” Rikhotso added.

Six of the suspects appeared in court where they faced charges of hijacking, robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder.

The other two suspects were due to appear facing the same charges at the time of going to press on Wednesday 12 August.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Controversial “sex pastor’’ Bishop Tefo Jonas Pitso has to remain behind bars to stand trial on 30 counts of rape and sexual assault.

On Tuesday 11 Au-gust, the High Court denied Pitso’s appeal to not be released on bail while stand-ing trial. This is the fourth time his appeal did not succeed. Adv Riekie Krause, for the state, opposed each appeal.

The Bishop, who heads Jehovah Sham-

mah International Ministries in Jouberton, handed himself over to police in March 2018 when allega-tions surfaced that he preyed on his

female congregants. He has been behind bars since then. He faces 30 charges of rape and sexual as-sault on women now aged between 22 and 36.

He pleaded not guilty on all the char-ges.

The trial is set to continue in Klerks-dorp on 17 August.

losana is resolved without residents be-ing without electricity,’’ she said.

At the time of going to press, Eskom still planned to go ahead with inter-rupting electricity to the Kosh Area, starting on Friday 14 August at 06:00.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The three sus-pects who were arrested shortly after an attack on a farmer in the Leeudo-ringstad District, appeared in court this week. They were charged with house robbery and possession of suspected stolen goods on Tuesday 11 August.

Two of the suspects, Dinah Mereko (43) and Mziwabantu Bathakani (37) appeared in the Leeudoringstad Mag-istrate Court on a charge of house rob-bery, while William Mbotswa (29), sus-pected to be an accomplice, appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrate Court for possession of suspected stolen goods.

The lookout for a blue Toyota Yaris apparently stolen in an attack on a farm was given through emergency channels shortly after 12:30 on Thursday 6 Au-gust.

According to the North West police spokesperson Brig Sabata Mokgwa-bone, it is alleged that the victim (78) and his daughter were attacked by five suspects who then fled the scene after.

“The suspects fled the scene in the victim’s blue Toyota Yaris car. Cell phones, cash and two firearms were sto-len. Following a lookout, Flying Squad members gave chase when they spotted the vehicle in Klerksdorp and cornered the suspects in Wessels Street, Meirings-park where shots were exchanged.

“The suspects then fled into the bushes. However, two of them were ar-rested and three firearms confiscated,” Mokgwabone said.

On the arrival of Lentswe at the scene, the Toyota Yaris was cordoned off with police tape, with its two front doors opened, and the keys still in the ignition. A number of police and secu-rity vehicles were around to monitor the situation and one suspect was being detained.

At that time, the search for another suspect continued on foot, in cars and by air with the police helicopter circling

The two suspects Mereko (43) and Bathakani (37) were remanded in cus-tody until Tuesday 18 August for a for-mal bail application. Mbotswa’s case is postponed until Monday 17 August for bail application. He will be joining the other two accused in Leeudoringstad on 18 August.

A fourth suspect, aged 19, was also arrested. He is expected to appear in court on Thursday 13 August.

Brig Mokgwabone said the investiga-tion into the matter is still ongoing.

Lentswe newspaper, which is the sister paper of Klerksdorp Record has grown from a one-page newsletter to at least more than eight pages catering kasi (township) news.

For a start, Lentswe was a page titled “African Beat” and published as part of Klerksdorp Record’s news of-fering every Friday.

The late ntate ID Tau who was from Alabama contributed some African items for publication.

And in 1980 Klerksdorp Record management, under Issabel Krause, identified the need for a fully-fledged newspaper for the Western Transvaal kasis. Hence the birth of Lentswe.

Journalists like Buang Dithebe, Mzayifani Hoffman, Gideon Manzana, Steve Motale and Isaac Diphoko had attached their signatures in this paper. Their footprints will always remain in this sands.

Dithebe was the first journalist of the four-page newspaper. Later Hoffman joined him as an additional scribe for the paper before Dithebe left to persue other interests.

The late Hoffman (may his soul rest in peace), was credited for having

transformed the tone of Lentswe from a mere pur-veyor of news to a champion of the underdogs, as a politi-cal journal.

In 1986 he was detained, without trial, for what he believed was his sup-port for the liberation movement with his hard-hitting leader articles.

Lentswe was also suspended from circulation during his term in prison and the paper was back on the street when Hoffman was released from jail.

Manzana known as ‘Bro Giddy’ (may his soul rest in peace), who was also a reporter on Lentswe took a few years off to work as a journalist at Anglo-Gold Ashanti.

Motale then came in and later left to pursue his career at the national news-papers like The Citizen and others.

Diphoko known as Tebby then came on board and shook readers with front-page photographs of ladies under ‘Voice Babe’ and his column of ‘Daai Ding’ and others.

When he left to pursue a career in local government, Bro Giddy came back as news editor of Lentswe. He passed away in 2014.

Before Lentswe welcomed me of-ficially, I worked with Tebby and Bro Giddy, helping

each other in this media industry. When I came in, it was indeed a

‘dream come true’ to me as it was always my wish to contribute on this paper.

Mind you, that’s when I came armed with a national experience from Daily Sun & Sunday Sun, The New Age and also Radio SABC news in the North West.

Today, I can proudly say, Lentswe’s voice is still louder.

In my times with the support of our team, I remember that Lentswe once reached 20-pages, it’s ‘Rest in Peace’ page had once grew to two pages and then the birth of ‘Motswako Waka’ as my column.

Motswako Waka would like to extend its gratitude to thank you again as an avid reader of Lentswe.

Keep on raising the volume of Lentswe to be heard louder and lou-der.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Depart-ment of Education MEC Mma-phefo Matsemela said she received with sadness the news of the death of the former Superintendent-General, Dr Itumeleng Samuel Molale.

He died on Sunday 9 August after a long illness at a Medi Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria.

According to her, the late Dr Molale served the depart-ment for 35 years. He joined the de-partment in 1982 as a teacher before he became departmental head, middle school principal, high school principal, Education Advisor at In-service Training, Director (8 years), Chief Direc-tor for Quality Assess-ment (10 years) and

Superintendent General for five years until he retired in 2017.

MEC Matsemela conveyed a message of condolences to the bereaved family.

“On behalf of the department, I wish to convey my heartfelt con-

dolences to the Molale family and the entire workforce of the North West Department of Education. I worked with him from 2013 until 2017 and he served with dedica-tion and passion. I honestly do not have words to describe his intellec-tual capacity.

“He was a mave-rick in the education fraternity.

“During his era as the Superintendent-General the province obtained top two na-tional positions in the matric results for 2013 and 2014.

“He will forever be missed and we pray for the family to gain strength during this trying time,” MEC Matsemela said.

At the time of his death he was em-ployed by the North West University and according to the fa-mily, the funeral will be held at his family residence on Friday 14 August. May his soul rest in peace.

Accused sentenced for murder

Lentswe, Tigane - On Thursday 6 August, a 45-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years im-prisonment in connection with murder.

Lebogang Jimmy Sebendwane was sentenced for the killing of Selina Mano (54) at his home in Ext 3 Moscow Section in Tigane in February 2014.

According to the Klerksdorp Cluster police spokesperson Sgt Amogelang Mabihi, Mano’s body was found by neighbour’s lying next to the accused’s house.

She said the victim was declared dead on the scene. There was multiple stab wounds on the body.

“The accused, Sebendwane was interrogated by the police, but denied any knowledge of the incident. His house was searched and his blood-stained clothes, as well as a knife covered in blood was found in the house. He was immedi-ately arrested and was denied bail until his trial started,” Mabihi said.

He was sentenced in the Klerksdorp Regional Court last week.
