How did the Olympics start?
The Olympics started in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC
and the modern Olympics started in 1896.
Back in 776 BC the games were violent and
rough, the arena floor was usually covered in blood! The word arena is actually the name of the sand thatwas laid down inside the arena.
In the early Olympics the participants would
take part in activities like: running, pentathlons (a
jumping event, javelin throws, a foot race and wres-
tling) and boxing. They would also have 4 and 2 horse
chariot races and a race in armour. In boxing andwresting matches there were no weight limits so you
could be against anyone!!!! If someone started a race
at the wrong time (false start) they would be whipped.
In the early Olympic games all the men wore
nothing for safety reasons and woman would wear
simple tunics. The early Olympic games only lasted three days.
Around 400 BC more and more activities were being
added and the games became a full five days long.
The games were held in honour of Zeus, king of
all gods. They were always held in Olympia and manypeople from around the country would come to see the
games.
The winners of the Olympic games were pre-
sented with a wreath of leaves and when winners re-
turned home they were usually treated well and were
given free feasts and meals. In 1896 the modern Olym-pics were invented. Now we have a summer and win-
ter Olympics, the Olympics are held every 4 years. The winter Olympics first started in France, 1924. The
most recent (21st) winter Olympic games were held in
Vancouver in 2010. The most recent summer Olympic
games were heldin Beijing in
2007.

The Olympic Games
2,700 years ago, in Olympia in Greece, The
Olympic games began in honour of Zeus
(King of the Gods). It was part of a religious
festival that was thought to have started in
776 BC and takes place every four years.
This is what happened in the original Olym-
pic games
In the first thirteen Olympic games, there
was only one event and that was the sprint.
The sprint was about one hundred and eight
metres in length. It was only done by men
and they did it in the nude! Then later the
Pentathlon was added and it had different
events. There was the discus, javelin, jump-ing, running, and wrestling. After a while,
they added equestrian events that included
chariot racing and riding.
As you know the Modern Olympic games
are held every four years. That means the
winter and summer games are always two
years apart. The events at the winter games
have increased over the years, for example
in 2002 in Salt lake city the events were Al-
pine skiing, Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Cross-
Country, Ice hockey, Luge, Nordic com-bined, Short track speed skating, Skeleton,
Ski jumping, Snowboarding and Speed
Skating.
Now you have learned that the Olympics
were held to honour the Ancient Greek
Gods. Becoming an Olympic medallist is
really hard and it takes a lot of work. Now
you can tell the person you are sitting next
to the history of the Olympics.

One, Two, Three, London Win!
This summer, London is holding the great Olympic Games! Itll be a first thatany city has held the modern games for three times. Lets look at the previous
two games held in London! In 1908 the Games were due to be in Rome but Mount Vesuvius erupted
on April 7th 1906 ruining the city of Naples. Italy couldnt afford to host the
games so London was chosen to step in and save the day! A huge stadium was
speedily built in White City costing 60,000 that held 130,000 people. There
were 22 nations participating in the Olympics.Did you know that there were only 37 women competing and it was the
first and only time the tug of war was an event?
Then in 1948 the Olympics returned again to London. It was the first
Olympics since 1936 because of World War 2. The country was really poor af-ter the War so no new venues were built. Most of the events were held in Wem-
bley Stadium. Germany and Japan were not invited to the games because peo-
ple blamed them for the War.
Did you know that the 1948 Olympics was known as the austeritygames because it was the first and only to feed the athletes War rations!
Lets hope 2012 will be a great event and one to remember!

Awesome Owens Olympic triumph in 1936
Jesse Owens an American hero, an Olympic champion of 1936,set an example that everyone will follow to this day! Jesse was a
man of great strength, courage and character. His dreams came true when he participated in the Berlin Olym-
pics in 1936.He won four gold medals! For the 100 meters , 200 meters , long
jump and
4x100m relay.
Early years
Jesse Owens was born on September 12th 1913. He was the sev-enth child of eleven. He grew up in a small village, Oakland,
Alabama. His parents, Henry and Emma were always worrying
because he got ill a lot.He came to be known as Jesse when he started at a new schooland his teacher misheard J.C and recorded his name as Jesse, the
name he would be known by for the rest of his life. His familymoved to Cleveland, Ohio because the village they lived in was
very poor and they wanted a better life.Jesse went to a high school called Cleveland East Technical and
when he was there, a coach, Charles Riley, spotted his talent.Riley coached him every day for four years before school, be-cause after school he worked at a shop called Tonys shoe repair,
to get money for his family.
World records
In 1935 he set 3 world records and tied a fourth in just 45 min-utes at an athletics competition in America.
The 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. In 1936, Jesse competed in the Berlin Olympics. This was one ofhis greatest achievements where he won 4 gold medals for the100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and long jump. He helped break theworld record for the 4x100m relay. This was his last event at the
Olympics and he went out with pride and success. Even the Ger-
mans were impressed and many of them asked him to sign some-
thing, which he did with happiness. Adolf Hitler was the leaderof Germany at the time and was not very happy that a black man
had beaten his German athletes.OTHER AWARDS
His Olympic medals were not the last that he would see either. In 1976 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom bythe US president, Gerald Ford. This was a great honor and onethat he treasured. Even after his death, in 1980 aged 66, he con-
tinued to win medals and honors such as the Congressional GoldMedal that was awarded by the president George Bush. Todaythe Jesse Owens Award, is given to the year's best Americantrack and field athlete. This award is named after him in honor of
his amazing achievements. There is even a street and a school in
Germany named after him.
The memory of Jesse OwensIn Jesses hometown, Oakville, Alabama lies a bronze
plaque shining in the sunlight.
The message on it says:May his light shine forever as a symbol
For all who run the freedom of sport
For the spirit of humanity
For the memory of Jesse Owens; By Charles Ghigna
Champions
In 1986, six years after Jesse Owens died, a new star was born,Usain Bolt. He was determined to follow in the footsteps ofJesse Owens. He went on to win three gold medals in the 2008
Olympics in China (Beijing) in the 100m, 200m and the4x100m relay - just like Jesse Owens did 72 years before. I won-

Sir Steve Redgrave
Great British OlympianThe Olympic Games started in Greece in the 8 th
century BC and has taken place every 4 years
ever since. Many athletes take part in the Olym-
pic Games, with nearly every nation in the world
represented. Over the years there have been
many great Olympians such as Jessie Owens and
Carol Lewis; both great track athletes. My favorite sport in the Olympics is running and
my favorite runner was Kelly Holmes. Although
she didnt win gold at the Olympics, she did get a
bronze in 2000. This was an especially great
achievement because she was injured before theOlympics and didnt have very much training.
However, I think the greatest Olympian of them
all is Sir Steve Redgrave, the rower.
Sir Steve was born on the 23 rd March 1962 in
Buckinghamshire. He won 5 consecutive gold
medals from 1984 to 2000, which is why I thinkhe was the best Olympian as it must take a tre-
mendous amount of dedication to do this for 16
years. After winning his gold ion 1996, he fa-
mously said If anyone finds me near a rowing
boat again they can shoot me!. However, despitesaying this and being ill, he came back to win
another gold in 2000.
Steven is married to Ann Callaway, who is also a
rower and they have 3 children. He was made an
MBE in 1987, a CBE in 1997 and became a
Knight Bachelor in 2001.

How it all startedAccording to the Greek legend, Hercules a son of Zeus found theancient Olympic games. The first games were held in Athens 776
BCE although it is generally believed the games had been going onfor many years already. At this time, a naked runner called Corebus
(a cook of Elis) was the very first Olympic champion! He won this by
winning the sole event ,the stade-a run of 192 meters!
Underneath I am going to tell you about an athlete called
Denise Johns.
Denise Johns was born on the 9th of December 1978 in Ettelbruck, Luxembourg with her English father Mar-tin Johns and her sister. Denise and her family moved from Luxembourg to Copley, Ohio when she was 4

RUNNINGMy favourite sport is running I love it because when I run I can forget all my problems and
enjoy the fresh air, especially when I run early in the morning with Hobbaynes Running Club. I
also train on a Thursday evening with the Perivale Panthers at Perivale race track. Sometimes
we train on a wonderful flood-lit track and other times we either run around the local streets
or do some cross country runs. I have also represented Hobbayne Primary School in cross
country races.
Interesting Fact 1 at the first Ancient Olympic Games in Olympia, Greece therewas only one event which was the stadion footrace, and the competitors used to run this
race in the nude!
Nowadays there are lots of different running events in the Olympics that are categorised as
sprints, middle-distance and long distance. They include 100m sprint, 4 x 100m relay, 3000m
steeple chase, 400m hurdles and even a marathon. Men and women can compete in all of these
events but they do not race against each other.
Interesting Fact 2 The Unites States of America has won more medals in the
summer Olympic Games than any other country (2,549).
There are lots of health benefits to running and when you run regularly you tone up your mus-cles, your joints become more flexible and your bones grow stronger. Running also makes you
feel good and increases your energy levels so why not give it a go!!!

Gymnastics in the Olympics
One of the most amazing events in the 2012 Olympics is gymnastics. In this year's Olympics it isgoing to be fantastic.
All the fabulous athletes who perform in the Olympics train a lot. They are the best in the world!
When you train to be in the Olympics you have to listen very carefully otherwise you will get some-thing so wrong you could hurt yourself very badly.
Sometimes when the athletes are training they have to do moves where they have to keep strongand some when they have to be delicate.
Once they have done the training you can actually see how hard they work because it is all worth itwhen they go to the Olympics. When they perform they always have to keep their bodies straight and their legs and arms very verystrong.
The gymnasts flip, balance, leap, twist, bend, jump, twirl
and spin. There are lots of different types of equipment like therings, the horse, bars or ropes. They have to focus and concentrate and try their best. Itis all worth it because they could win a gold medal.

Sustainable Olympics
From the start From the moment it wasannounced, the London 2012 Olympics was defi-
nitely going to be a special event. Sebastian Coe,the British ambassador and ex-Olympic cham-
pion, entered London into a ballot with the few
countries that applied, to have the Olympic
Games on their doorstep. With 54 votes toFrances 50, this night on the 6
thJuly 2005 in
Singapore was not to be forgotten. As well asmaking use of many stadiums already in Britain,
London would have to create some unique new
venues, including an aquatics centre, Olympic
stadium and velodrome . It would involve 24
sports, each with at least 100 competitors from
countries across the world Why Stratford?A deserted plain, Stratford contains a lot of un-
used land, making it the perfect place to build an
Olympic village. The design was launched in2007, taking four years to build .Because the only
area available was on a hill, the architect incorpo-rated that into the design, putting the changing
rooms and warm up areas under ground. Each of
the newly built venues for the London 2012
Olympics holds at least 6,000 people, with the
Olympic stadium holding a vast number of
80,000 Homo sapiens. The aquatics centre does-nt quite reach that capacity but still does hold a
whopping 17,500 spectators enjoying the pres-
ence of 950 swimmers racing for their lives. The
shape of a ceiling is a wave thats even bigger
than Heathrows terminal 5, its got 2 pools, a50m long pool with 10 lanes, and a diving pool25 m square. The diving boards go up to 10m tall
and have got parallel boards for Tom Daley and
the rest of the British diving team to fly off like
kingfishers plunging into the inviting water to
catch their prey. SustainabilityThe architect, Populous, who designed it, claims
it was designed to be sustainable but is his design
fit to wow the crowds at the Olympics and last for
longer ? West Ham United have previously made
bids for the Olympic stadium but they have failed
to reach a successful negotiation with Hugh
Robertson (Olympic minister.)The OlympicVelodrome is heading to go to the Forest Stew-
ardship Council & the aquatics centre
planned to go toNewham council so the localcommunity will get the benefit of these fantastic
arenas.
The upper wing on the Olympic stadium is set to
be recycled but some people complain that no-
body will want it; the stadium roof will be too big
to cover the lower wing once the upper wing has
gone & it would cost too much to dismantle the
stadium. Overall, I think the Olympic site will be
fit to wow the crowds at the Olympics, but Idoubt all of it will be sustainable.Joe Lee, Gold Class

I picture the Olympics..SightsI picture the Olympics to be filled with bustling fans, trying to get a glimpse of their sporting role models.
Great smiles would be painted on their faces as they cheer their country on. Amazingly florescent fireworks
would shoot through the sky like the bullet of a gun at a starting line. Like a birds nest, the Olympic stadium
would coil around you until it looked like there was no way out. Flags would be held up high, 360 of the wayaround me, so all that would be seen is the faint blur of confused colours. Wedlock and Mandeville would be
prancing around as if there were springs implanted in their legs.
The smellsI picture the Olympics to smell like I was back in my school P.E changing room. As the
athletes brains start striving to win, tension starts to turn into a scent. On the other hand,
there would be a slight whiff of fresh, new sports equipment and sharply cut grass. The
sweet scent of popcorn would fill the stadium; peoples noses would tingle with glee.
The tasteMy taste buds would beg for more as I wolf down my share of exotic food. Ice cream would slide down my
throat like a slithering snake. The caviar, which could be mistaken creepy eyeballs, would pop as I chew them. The soundsThe sound of cheering would bounce off your eardrums. The screaming of fireworks would sound like a baby
was crying. Disappointed fans would give a muffled groan as their favourite sports people fail to get a medal.By Bethany Year 6
