COLD CRANKING AMPS - EN TO SAE - ARE YOU COMPARING CORRECTLY? The specification of lead acid starter batteries is measured using two critical criteria - capacity in Ah and Cold Cranking Amps. Capacity denotes the amount of electricity stored in the battery (important for powering electrical consumers such as lights, air conditioning, wipers and so on). This is generally measured by all producers at the 20 hour rate, so it is quite easy to make product comparisons. Cold Cranking denotes the amount of starting power the battery can deliver under load, ie when starting an engine. This can be measured in several different ways, but the standard value in Europe - accepted by all European OEMs - is EN (European Norm). However in the far East and the US the standard used is denoted as SAE, and these different values are often used in error to compare battery performance. As many batteries are imported from outside of Europe, it is important that the differences in Cold Cranking ratings are understood by UK customers; essentially the test used to obtain SAE values discharges the battery more than the EN test, with the result that SAE values are always higher than EN. However this has no bearing on the real performance of the battery, nor does it mean that a higher SAE rating is better than a lower EN rating. To help customers understand the real comparisons between EN and SAE values we have constructed a simple cross reference sheet based on the current VARTA car and the new commercial vehicle types. The Johnson Controls Power Solutions Europe customer technical bulletin for UK & Ireland June 2009 VARTA cold cranking values are determined according to the European Norm (EN), which is accepted by all European OEMs. ETN Short Code UK No Cap in Ah at 20 hr rate Cold start performance (EN) A Cold start performance (SAE) - approx values SILVER dynamic car batteries 552 401 052 C6 063 52 520 570 561 400 060 D21 075 61 600 650 563 400 061 D15 027 63 610 660 574 402 075 E38 100 74 750 810 577 400 078 E44 096 77 780 850 585 200 080 F18 110 / 115 85 800 870 600 402 083 H3 019 100 830 900 610 402 092 I1 - 110 920 1000 BLUE dynamic car batteries 540 126 033 A14 054 40 330 360 540 127 033 A15 055 40 330 360 542 400 039 B35 202 42 390 430 544 402 044 B18 063 44 440 480 545 155 033 B31 156 45 330 360 545 156 033 B32 044 / 053 45 330 360 12026-Varta Technical News Flyer.indd 1 5/6/09 10:07:10
