    Concrete Canvas (CC) can be rapidly unrolled to form a hardened, water proof, concrete ditch. It will conform to a range of ditch proles

    and curves and requires no specialist plant equipment for installation. CC has a design life of 25 years and is signicantly quicker and less

    expensive to install compared to conventional concrete ditch lining.

    CC consists of a 3-dimensional bre matrix containing a specially formulated dry concrete mix. A PVC backing on one surface ensures the

    material is water proof. The material can be hydrated either by spraying or by being fully immersed in water. Once hydrated the material

    remains exible and workable for 2 hours (subject to ambient temperatures) and gains 80% of its 28 day strength in the rst 24 hours. CC is

    available in 3 thicknesses, 5, 8 and 13mm. CC8 (8mm) is recommended for most ditching applications.

    CC5 has a standard roll width of 1.0m and both CC8 and CC13 are supplied in rolls 1.1m wide. The width of the material should be taken into

    account when determining the number of layers and the best method of laying up lengths of CC to a specic ditch prole. A minimum of 100mm

    should be allowed at overlaps between layers of CC and at the edge of the ditch. Figures 1-4 show typical ditch proles using 1, 2 and 3 layers

    of CC. For ditches where more than 3 CC longitudinal layers are required, it is recommended to use the CC Cross Layup method.

    CC will conform closely to the underlying surface contours

    of a ditch prole. The degree of ground preparation neededwill depend on the ditch design and surface nish required.

    It is recommended that loose soil, vegetation, soft ground,protruding rocks and voids should be minimised as they mayresult in damage to the CC.

    Once positioned, CC should be hydrated by spraying with water(sea water may be used). Spray the bre surface with water

    until it feels wet to touch for several minutes after spraying. Anexcess of water should be used as CC cannot be over hydrated(minimum ratio of water:CC is 1:2 by weight). Re-spray the CCagain after 1 hour if installing CC5, installing on steep slopes orinstalling in warm climates.

    It is important to ensure that overlapped and anchor trenchedsections are hydrated.

    CC can either be supplied in man portable lengths for manualapplication, or large rolls if plant equipment is available. Theapplication process is the same for either method. Unwrapthe CC, taking note of the roll direction as indicated on thepackaging. Ensure that the brous surface of the CC is facing

    upwards and the PVC membrane is in contact with the ground.Align the CC roll with the ditch and simply unroll down itsentire length. Manually press and position the material into theditch starting at the outow point. Contact Concrete Canvas

    Ltd. for details on hiring spreader beam equipment for bulk rollinstallation.

    When positioning subsequent CC rolls, ensure that there is atleast a 100mm overlap between layers. Ensure all overlaps arein the direction of water ow.

    CC can remain unxed or can be secured in place with an

    anchor trench or pegs, depending on the design requirementsof the ditch. Pegs should be driven through the un-hydratedCC along its length and at every joint. It is recommended

    that 13mm 250mm pegs are used, which are available fromConcrete Canvas Ltd.

    CC is very easy to shape before setting and can be easilymanipulated to form ditch junctions and terminals. It can be cutusing a snap off type disposable knife.

    CC can also be easily terminated using poured concrete, asthis readily adheres to the material.

    Once hydrated, CC remains workable for approx. 2 hours. Inwarm climates, working time may be reduced. CC will hardento 80% of its 28 day strength in 24 hours and is ready for use.

    In the right conditions, Concrete Canvas will naturally greenover time with moss and blend in with the environment.However CC will prevent root growing vegetation and weedgrowth, reducing the maintenance costs associated withunlined ditches.

    services and can only provide technical advice on the recommended thickness,

    quantity and installation method of Concrete Canvas. Concrete Canvas Ltd. is

    A simple overlap joint with compression is sufcient for many

    ditching projects. However for a good mechanical bond betweenlayers of CC, stainless steel screws should be inserted alongthe length of the joint every 20cm.

    An auto-fed collated screw driver is the quickest and easiestmethod of achieving this (suitable collated screws are availablefrom Concrete Canvas).
