UK HOOpS WInS AGAInSophomore forward Samarie Walker

played her best night in a UK uniform help-

ing lead the Cats to a 69-64 win Thursday

night in Athens, Ga., against the No. 15/14

Georgia Bulldogs.

This is the third consecutive win over a

ranked opponent for the Cats (17-2, 6-0) and

keeps them alone atop the SEC standings.

“I am so pleased after six to be unde-

feated, with three of those coming on the

road. We are in a good spot right now,” UK

head coach Matthew Mitchell said on the

UK IMG post game radio show. “We un-

derstand we are not the greatest team in the

country yet. We have a chance to be and we

have to work hard to get that done.”

Walker, a UConn transfer, delivered 18

points and nine rebounds in 20 minutes of

action for the Cats, helping the Cats win the

rebounding battle 47-36 over the Bulldogs.

“My teammates found a way to get me

the ball — I was working for it,” Walker

said during the radio show.

Walker came into the game averaging

4.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in

conference play.

“It’s great to see Samarie rounding into

shape. I think she can continue to improve

and work hard to get better,” Mitchell said.

“Surely tonight’s got to be a night that

gives her some confidence.”

Freshman guard Bria Goss rebounded

from her season-low three point perform-

ance Sunday at South Carolina by leading

the team with 22 points.

Winning the rebounding battle was par-

ticularly important for the Cats Thursday, as

their typical biggest weapon — the “40

Minutes of Dread” full-court press — was

relatively ineffective.

“One of the turning points was we got

out of our full-court press. That was not

good for us tonight,” Mitchell said. “Geor-

gia was fantastic in the full-court press of-

fense, we could not affect them at all.”

After a loss in Tuscaloosa to Vanderbilt, the University of Ala-bama Crimson Tide rolls to Lexington. The Tide (13-5, 2-2 SEC)brings a strong squad to Big Blue Nation.

UK, coming off freshman forward Anthony Davis’ career gameagainst Arkansas after scoring 27 points, 14 rebounds and sevenblocks, will compete against a defensive Crimson Tide squad thatranks No. 1 in opponent points per game in the SEC.

Alabama junior forward Tony Mitchell averages 7.5 rebounds pergame, which doesn’t quite contest Davis’ 10.4 rebounds per gameand 13.8 points per game.

Last year, Alabama beat UK 68-66 in Tuscaloosa.“They beat us in the paint, they beat us on the scoreboard, they

beat us physically,” Calipari said, referencing that loss. “They beat usabout a hundred different ways.”

However, the Cats earned asplit of last year’s series after de-feating the Crimson Tide in theSEC tournament 72-58. Still,Calipari saw one thing in com-mon between those games, some-thing he expects to return Satur-day.

“When we play them, theyare physical,” Calipari said.

Despite sophomore guard Doron Lamb’s recent slump, Caliparisaid he has been improving in the past few games, and still averagesa team-leading 14 points per game.

With the influences of Terrence Jones’ improving injured fingerand freshman point guard Marquis Teague’s better floor game, UKmay be at full strength by the time the Tide rolls to Lexington.

Alabama, meanwhile, may not be. It played a Thursday nightgame against Vanderbilt (a 69-59 loss) and must prepare for the shortturnaround of a noon tip-off.

Although Alabama is unranked, Calipari said it has potential to bea threatening opponent for the Cats.

“It’s going to be a war,” Calipari said. “Alabama’s a Sweet 16team in my mind.”

1. Defensive battle If there’s an SEC defense that can match

UK’s in effectiveness, it’s Alabama (RollTide), which ranks first inthe conference in scoringdefense and second infield percentage defense. After playing up-tempoand free-flowing, UK willbe forced into a grind-it-out, half court game —the type that has, on occa-sion, given the Cats’ of-fense trouble.

Alabama (Roll Tide)gives opponents fits be-cause it guards the entire

court intensely. It’s above average in steals(forcing 7.1 per game) and blocks (4.6 pergame), and exceptional at guarding the 3-point line (opponents shoot 25.7 percent).

UK can gain an advantage using its owndefense — which ranks No. 2 in scoring de-fense and No. 1 in field goal defense —against an average Alabama (Roll Tide) of-fense and on the boards. The Crimson Tideranks in the bottom half of the conference inrebounding offense and defense.2. Post play

Anthony Davis has proved he has morethan No. 1 draft pick potential — he’s pro-ducing at a No. 1 draft pick level right now.

Against Alabama (Roll Tide), however,Davis will get to prove he’s getting stronger,as he’s said.

The Crimson Tide are led by JaMychalGreen, averaging 14.2 points and 6.6 re-bounds per game, and Tony Mitchell, aver-aging 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds pergame. If there’s been one type of playerDavis hasn’t dominated this year, it’s beenbulkier players who weren’t afraid to create

contact with Davis in the post. Green can dojust that, looking to negate Davis’ blockingabilities by getting closer. It’s a move thatseems paradoxical, but it’s the best chanceopponents have of avoiding his reach.3. Little more Lamb

Arkansas was a good first step at gettingout of a scoring slump for Doron Lamb. Hescored 14 points and made two of four 3-pointers. In the seven games before that, hehad made six and had scored below his sea-son average (now at 14 points per game) inall seven.

Lamb is still UK’s leading scorer, and hemakes UK a different team when he’s at hisbest. Recently, he hasn’t been — it’s why hehas come off the bench three straight gamesafter starting each of UK’s first 16 — butLamb could re-emerge at any time. If he didSaturday, it could open up the scoringagainst Alabama (Roll Tide).

Many students may know Travis Porter by the popular song “Bringit Back,” and now they have a chance to see them live on campus.

Travis Porter performs live on Friday at the UK Winter Concertat the Singletary Center.

“I picked the Singletary Center because it is small enough togive an intimate feeling, yet have a large, if not sold out, turnout,”Jeremy Jones, owner and founder of Stand Out Agency, said.

Stand Out Agency took on the task of bringing in Travis Porterand putting on the performance.

“By bringing in Travis Porter to UK, I am trying to establish abetter brand name with the people in Lexington,” Jones said, who isa winter 2011 graduate from UK.

Stand Out Agency grew last year when Jones would do the mar-keting for pool parties over the summer.

Jones realized that marketing events could become a full busi-ness for him.

Opening for Travis Porter is IanJ, an 18-year-old high school stu-dent from Louisville.

IanJ has 28,000 plays on a single song, making him the best per-son to open for Travis Porter, Jones said.

Other opening acts include Future Kidz, The Aviation, Jay King,Young Bravo, D.Eazy and Real Life Tae.

To obtain VIP meet and greet passes with autographs and photo-graphs is $100.

The after party is planned to be at Forte Night Club on Eu-clid, with the attendance of Travis Porter. They will not be per-forming.

LOS ANGELES — When BruceSpringsteen hits the concert trail on a worldtour in May, he’ll have a new album’s worthof material to draw from in “WreckingBall,” a collection of 11 songs to be releasedMarch 6.

Springsteen’s website runs down the ti-tles from the New Jersey rocker’s 17th stu-dio album, which was produced by Spring-steen and Ron Aniello. An expanded editionalso will be available with two extra tracksas well as more photos and artwork.

The first single from the album is itslead-off track, “We Take Care of Our Own.”The announcement makes no mention of theE Street Band, but the single features thebacking of a band, indicating “WreckingBall” is not a solo acoustic Springsteen ef-fort.

“Bruce has dug down as deep as he canto come up with this vision of modern life,”said his manager, Jon Landau, who also isexecutive producer of the album, in a state-

ment posted on Springsteen’s website. “Thelyrics tell a story you can’t hear anywhereelse and the music is his most innovative inrecent years. The writing is some of the bestof his career and both veteran fans and thosewho are new to Bruce will find much to loveon ‘Wrecking Ball.’”

It will be Springsteen’s first recording, and tour, since the death last year of saxo-phonist Clarence “Big Man” Clemons, whodied from complications from a massivestroke.

Springsteen’s tour with the E StreetBand opens May 13 in Seville, Spain, andthe first leg to be announced includes 31shows in 26 European cities. More dates in-cluding the United States are still to be de-tailed.

Springsteen also will be a keynotespeaker at this year’s South By SouthwestMusic Conference in Austin in March.

For those with tight budg-

ets from Christmas and plenty

of time to procrastinate, here

are ways to cheaply pass the

time.

Pick up your phone and

download these free apps:

1. Words with FriendsNot only

are you put-

ting your

knowledge to

good use in a game of scrab-

ble, but you get to bask in

the victory of knowing more

than your opponent.

2. Temple RunYou will honestly play this

game forever. You run from

monkeys and collect coins while jumping

over broken bridges and dodging fire. Don’t

play this game unless you have the time.

3. Pocket FrogsIt is the cutest game ever.

You breed frogs and send

frogs to friends. To keep

them happy, you have to send

them to the pond and jump

lily pads to feed them dragonflies. You

unlock achievements and decorate their

habitats.

4. Tiny TowerYou are in charge of literally

a “Tiny Tower.” You get to as-

sign people dream jobs, buy

floors, rename them and deco-

your roommate and laugh in

the process. The talking tom

will mock everything said in

a squeaky voice that you

could only assume a cat

would have if it could talk. There are

variations of this game, such as “Talking

Dinosaur,” but this is the only one that

will keep you laughing.

6. Glass PongThis fun game is a virtual

game of pong. What more do

you need to know?

7. Doodle SprintRun, jump, but make sure

eled is now a free app. You will

be playing it forever because

you are determined to beat an

unbeatable game.

it is pretty cool. You get to take

the movies you make on your

iPhone and create an action

movie.
