FROM THE A/PRINCIPAL

Welcome to Week 9 at Darling Heights State School.

This week I would like to focus our community’s attention to school readiness.

It is wonderful to see so many students arriving at school nice and early in full school uniform with their jumper and hat ready to have a very prosperous school day as a learner. We ask all parents to please ensure that your child is at school ready to participate as a learner by ensuring they are clean and tidy, dressed for the cooler conditions, have had a full breakfast and are ready for learning by 8:45am at the latest. There are a significant number of students arriving after the first bell which then takes away a considerable portion of the beginning of their day, as they stand in line waiting for a late slip.

We are pleased to announce that our school attendance percentages across all year levels is increasing, with our whole school attendance percentage currently sitting on 92%. Keep up the great work Darling Heights and thank you parents.

Parents, as we only have a little over two weeks until the school holiday period, our teachers are busily assessing our students in preparation for report cards. Report cards will be distributed to families in Week 11 on the Wednesday after-noon.

As Mr Creedon’s holiday adventures continue to unfold, while we are all back here working diligently, I find myself about to embark on the next exciting adven-ture in my own career.

Last Monday I was interviewed by the Assistant Director General and two Re-gional Directors, and I am very excited to announce that I have been appointed to the Band 11 position of Principal, Rural and Remote Centre for Learning and Wellbeing based in Roma District Office. This is a very exciting time for schools in our region as this newly created position is only one of two in the state of Queensland. PBL (POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING) MATTERS The Value for this week is “Safety” with a focus on “I use the toilets in a safe, appropriate manner”.

This week students will be reminded about which toilet block to use and the importance of using the toilets cor-rectly and hygienically. Students are also encouraged to use the amenities during break times to ensure that their learning time is maximised in the classroom. As always, we encourage students to report any problems or issues directly to a staff member. A special thanks to all parents who take the time each week to sit down and talk to their child/ren about the week’s Value and focus. If any parents have any queries or concerns or wish to discuss anything, please feel free to contact Mrs Keiryn Clements (Deputy Principal) on 46 368 333. OPTIMISM Optimism is an outlook on life such that one maintains a view of the world as a positive place. Optimists are people who refuse to feel helpless and don’t give up when faced with seemingly impossible problems. They expect to suc-ceed, believe in themselves and remain positive. Opti-mists generally believe that people and events are inher-ently good, so that most situations work out for the best in the end. Optimism includes the assumption I can do something to change this situation for the better, whereas pessimism includes the assumption probably nothing I do will make any difference. Of course, when you're optimistic, you are more willing to take action to change things for the better, which increases the likelihood that things will change for the better; that's how optimism becomes self-fulfilling. How do children develop optimism? As children grow and develop, they need as many opportunities as possible to experience success. Every time children achieve some-thing they set out to do, they start to develop a belief that they can go on trying and have more successes. ‘Self talk’ is what we say to ourselves to explain the things that hap-pen through the day. When children are able to say to themselves that they can do something, they are more likely to succeed. Recent research has indicated that success experiences and positive interactions with parents, teachers and signifi-cant others are critical factors in children learning opti-mism. The way that adults think about and talk about their

experiences are very powerful in shaping a child’s beliefs about why success or failure might happen. The more optimistic children are, the more able they are to succeed and have a sense of the future and the more they are able to make friends and learn at school. What parents can do:

Be a good role model - let your children hear how you make sense of a situation (your ‘self talk’) and share your positive thoughts with your children.

Re-phrase what your child says - say things or use different words to make more positive sense out of a situa-tion. Child: "I never have anyone to play with." Parent: "Sometimes it’s hard to find a friend, but last week you had a good time with Mary."

Tell your own stories of overcoming hardships - "When I was at school I thought . . but then I realised . . . "

Give encouragement - "What were your thoughts when you were losing that tennis game?", "How did your thoughts change to help you to move from losing to win-ning?" Help your child catch the helpful and unhelpful thoughts and stick with the helpful ones.

Remember to share some of the old sayings: - "If at first you don’t succeed - try, try again." - "There’s no such word as can’t." - "Every cloud has a silver lining." Draw your child’s attention to media and highlight public figures or winning teams who have overcome hard-ship.

“An optimist is the human personification of spring.” Susan J. Bissonette

SENIOR NEWS Interschool Sport nominations are in progress and all stu-dents are encouraged to participate in representing the school by playing Soccer and Hockey against other schools in Toowoomba. The cost will be around $25 and shin pads will be required for both sports. Excellent behav-iour is another requirement. Once a child has nominated, they are expected to stay with that sport as teams need to be organised. However, if a student has put themselves down for Social Sport and wishes to join a team, we en-courage them to talk to Mr Naumann as soon as possible.

In other news, students with excellent behaviour will be receiving Treat Day Invitations in the near future. This term students will be going bowling and the cost of the game, shoe hire and bus is expected to work out at around $8-9. This has always been a wonderful day for the kids in the past, so we suggest that you start saving up those gold coins to the last day of school!

DARLING HEIGHTS DAZZLERS We have had our second week of training and the skip-pers are having a great time. They have been learning some single rope skills and some double dutch skills. There will be competition ropes for sale in about a week’s time. I have ordered them from Brisbane. They are a spe-cial rope with longer handles and an adjustable cord that can be made the correct length for each skipper. They are much easier to learn the skills with. If you would like to purchase one the new ones are $16.00 each. Thanks to Miss Dickens and Ms Hibbard who came to training last Wednesday. Cheers, Jo and Amy
