Passion for Excellence. Commitment to Delivery.
SummaryATLAS stands for Advanced ParTs Logistics in AfterSales.
The scope of ATLAS Wholesale Europe Extended template was the
global rollout of an SAP-based solution for the spare parts
business with the following tasks:
Enhancement of the existing SAP Templates Execution of global
planning SAP rollout in 8 key European markets in more than 20
locations
ATLAS
ATLAS aims to redesign and improve the logistical supply chain
processes and systems of the spare parts business from the supplier
all the way to the dealer. Implementation with the stan-dard
software SAP is happening on two levels. One team is con-cerned
with the introduction of SAP into the central logistics
de-partments (in Munich and Dingolfing) and another team is taking
care of the implementation in wholesale markets around Europe.
Initial Situation
Lodestone took over the running of the wholesale project in
2008. The project had already been implemented in two pilots, in
Italy and in the US.
The Business Objectives
Implement worldwide transparent, consistent, and integrat-ed
parts processes (vertical integration)
Supply chain planning throughout all distribution levels Improve
parts availability throughout the network with high transparency
about stock and orders
Reduce operating cost and improve inventory management
Success StoryBMW Group, ATLAS Wholesale
Increase overall parts business productivity Standardize IT
systems and software in line with the global IT roadmap
Implement solid and scalable IT solutions according to the BMW
Group IT strategy (SAP in the finance and logistics areas)
Reduce IT infrastructure, operating, and maintenance costs
Replace the current heterogeneous system (different plat-form,
databases, and operating systems)
The Solution
Based on the existing template, Lodestone developed an ap-proach
with a common design and realization phase. The team travelled to
all markets and did an upfront gap analysis. The design-to-budget
approach was then used to evaluate all col-lected requirements
according to different criteria such as le-gal requirements, strong
business case.
All legal and necessary requirements with a strong business case
were then developed in a common release and fitted into the
existing template. The team thus managed to keep a short cyclical
rollout sequence. In between the rollouts there were only minor new
developments and therefore very small inter-mediate releases.

Summary
The Business Objectives
ATLAS
The Solution
Based on the existing template, Infosys Lodestone developed an
approach with a common design and realization phase. The team
travelled to all markets and did an upfront gap analysis. The
design-to-budget approach was then used to evaluate all collected
requirements according to different criteria such as legal
requirements, strong business case.
Initial Situation
Infosys Lodestone took over the running of the wholesale project
in 2008. The project had already been implemented in two pilots, in
Italy and in the US.
With this industrialized rollout approach, we managed to roll
out 8 markets with a total of 6 warehouses and 12 Dealer
Met-ropolitan Distribution Centers (DMDCs) between October 2009 and
March 2011.
The solution can be expanded to further countries, and allows
for integration with ATLAS Central (the solution for the central
distribution in Dingolfing) and enhancement of the functional-ity
in the ATLAS template (i.e., Pick by Voice).
Key success factors for the project included mutual
coopera-tion. The well-attuned team rolled out several warehouses
and markets in a short time. Due to a pre-set budget, the
require-ments were limited to a realizable amount (design-to-cost).
Lastly, the mix of experts and generalists from BMW and Lode-stone
gave the flexibilty to put together the different rollout teams
based on needs.
Supply chain planning, supply chain execution, warehouse
management, finance, development and communication/train-ing areas
all work together in the ATLAS template.
The Benefits
With the unique outbound solution, deliveries and HUs are only
assigned to a shipment at the very last step. This keeps a high
flexibility in the warehouse regarding shipping and the possibility
for extended monitoring
Multi-country delivery enables shipment from one ware-house to
more than one country, complete with invoicing and automated
inter-company invoices

The new pricing strategy gave the national sales companies more
transparency and freedom in price setting
DMDCs make fast-moving items more available to dealers in urban
areas by delivering up to four times a day. These small warehouses
were also equipped with a stripped-down SAP solution to fit their
needs
Lodestone Contribution
Lodestone provided planning, execution, and support through
project leads, with up to 60 experts and team members. Lode-stone
designed, implemented and rolled out the enhancement of an existing
SAP template (SAP R/3, APO) and a release up-grade to ECC 6.0 with
unicode conversion.
The firm further provided subject matter expertise in special
tasks such as master data strategy, reporting strategy, and
supplied training to end-users.
